    Watership Down - which should never, ever, have been a single novel. It's basically a version of the Aeneid . . .told entirely with rabbits. Not magic rabbits, mind you, or mutant ones, or . . .Just plain, ordinary rabbits, whose lives just happened to parallel the events of the Roman epic.

    Maybe it would have been better as a series of much shorter novels - I could definitely see it being popular with younger readers. But as one giant epic? It was way, way too long.
