  • What's your set-up like?

    Widgets Magazine
I just noticed that no one over here at Fandom has bothered setting up an audio/video "what's your equipment" list yet, so with everyone's permission, I'll start one now with my own audio video setup.

    Video:
Samsung, 61" 1080P LED DLP Rear Projection TV
    Sony BDPS350 Blu Ray Player
    Sony DVPNS67 DVD Player
    Sony SLVN99 VCR
    Sony SLV975 VCR

    Audio:
Denon AVR 789 7.1 Dolby True HD, DTS HD Master Receiver
    Paradigm Mini-Monitor (2) Main L/R Speakers
    Paradigm CC-350 Center Channel Speaker
Paradigm ADP-170 Dipole Surround (2) Side Speakers
Paradigm ADP-190 Monopole Surround Rear Speaker
    Paradigm PS-1000 Sub-Woofer

It's a wonderful home theatre system that does everything except 3D. The 61" Samsung has good off-access viewing, the Denon Receiver does a very good job of balancing the sound (though it's complicated as hell to set up) and the Paradigm speakers are exceptionally smooth and neutral sounding which is important to me as I also like to use them extensively for classical music listening. Overall, I can't see how I could have gotten a much better system at the price at the time.

So now what's your system like?

    Re: What's your set-up like?

    TV: 46" 1080p Samsung A650 LCD
    BD/DVD/MP4 player: PlayStation 3
MKV/streaming player: PC w/HDMI TV out
    Sound: Onkyo HT-S3200 HTIB

For the sound, I can't use the subwoofer where I live, and besides that, I'm too lazy to figure out how to properly configure surround sound. I mainly use the unit for the headphone port, anyway, unless there are guests around.

I guess I'll play along too. I think I posted my setup at the old place, but that was a few years ago, and I've upgraded everything since then, anyway.

TV: Toshiba REGZA 42" LCD calibrated with THX calibration tool from a PIXAR BD
BD/DVD: Sony PlayStation 3 connected by HDMI to display for video and Optical Digital for audio to...
        Audio: Sony DAV-DZ170 HTiB

Sure, it's not fancy or "top of the line", but for my budget and space, I'd say it's a respectable system that looks and sounds great for a casual audio- and video-phile.

TV: Panasonic 53" 1080i RPTV (Really need to upgrade this, but all my bucks went to a new car this year...)
          BD/DVD: Panasonic DMP-BDT100
Media Player: Dune HD Smart D1
          AVR: Pioneer Elite SC-37
          5.1 Speakers: Onix Rockets
          Subwoofer: SVS
Media storage: Asus Windows Home Server computer and on my PC

AV components hooked in to my network via a Dlink wireless bridge and a gigabit switch. Currently running a 802.11g wireless network. I can play SD content fine, but HD content chokes over the wireless connection. At some point I'll run a hardwire network connection...

Yah, I'd say the Sony HTIB would probably match pretty good with the 42" flatscreen.

              Re: What's your set-up like?

My rig has been evolving over the years, and it's still a work in progress. Currently working towards my long-held dream of having a set of real speakers.
              • TV: Sharp LC-32GP3U (32" 1080p, optimized for gaming -- actually a notable feature when this set was new)
              • DVD: Oppo DV-983H
              • BD: Sony PlayStation 3 (phat, 80GB)
              • Other gaming: Xbox 360 (120GB), Wii, Slim PS2, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Super NES
              • AVR: Marantz SR5003
              • Speakers:
                • Front L/R: JBL ES90 (bi-amped)
                • Surround L/R: JBL ES10
                • Front Center: (TBA - will eventually be a JBL ES25C)
                • Subwoofer: (TBA, and to be honest I don't really feel a need for one, what with those monster 8" drivers in the ES90s, but it'll eventually be a JBL ES250 or L8400)
              • Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT-770Pro

I know I lose some l33t points by not aiming for a 7.1, but for my purposes, I'd rather have a really beefy front stereo section. And since my receiver lets me sacrifice the surround back outputs and turn them into a second amp channel for the fronts...

                Re: What's your set-up like?

I went and updated my setup quite a bit this week, as I bought a new set of floor speakers to replace the Monitor Audio Silver RX-1s, and a new integrated amplifier that replaces the power amplifier mentioned above. I wanted a better pre-amp for my music than the one in my receiver, and I also wanted to try something that wasn't ICEpowered. Here's a recap of my stuff then:

                Screen: Pioneer 420XA

                Speakers: DLS R55

                Receiver: Marantz SR4001

Integrated amplifier: Creek Evolution 2 (works as a power amplifier for the receiver, and gets a signal directly from my Squeezebox and radio tuner)

DAC: ONTech Standard DAC (some Danish high end thing)

Music player: Squeezebox Duet using iPeng on the iPod Touch as a remote

                Blu-ray/DVD player: Oppo BDP-83

                HD DVD player: Toshiba HD-EP30

Tuner: Some Sony thing with a few years on it

Consoles: Wii, PS3, PS Two, Xbox 360

The speakers are amazing and the Creek is one hell of an amp, and the price wasn't all that bad. I got a great deal on the speakers and I partially bought the Creek amp because I felt I'd fucked the store over on the speakers

                    TV: Philips 42PFL5604 (42")
                    DVD/BD (primary): PS3
DVD/BD (for non-R1/A region): Oppo BDP-83 (region free)
                    Receiver: Sony STR-DGR820
                    Speakers: JBL SCS 200.5

I also own a Xbox 360 and Wii, both those aren't connected due to lack of space and interest in the systems. As all is currently setup in a tiny room (9m2) I don't intend on changing anything right now. But I may upgrade the speakers to a (better) 7.1 set at the end of the year or next year.

My husband and I love watching movies and anime. He's also rather particular about good sound ^_^ So in the past we have splurged parts of tax returns or bonuses on our set up. We're currently on our second projector.

                          Projector:
                          Model: Panasonic PT-AE4000U
                          Connection: HDMI from Reciever

                          Screen:
Model: DA-LITE High Contrast Cinema Vision
                          Size: 106" diagonal

                          DVD/Bluray player:
Playstation 3 Connection: HDMI to Reciever

                          Reciever:
                          Model: ONKYO HT-RC180
                          Power: 110 watts per channel
                          Connection: All over HDMI

                          Speakers:
                          Hookup: 7.1 Channels
                          Fronts: Klipsch RB-61
                          Center: Klipsch CS-52
                          Rears: Klipsch RS-42
                          Surrounds: Klipsch RS-42
Subwoofer: Sony SA-WMS5 (from our previous setup)

PC (For streaming from Hulu / Netflix)
Model: Custom built w/Intel Core i7 processor, Video: Radeon HD 4850.
Connection: HDMI to Receiver (Audio and Video)

                          Laserdisk Player:
Pioneer, purchased in '99. Currently not connected to the setup.

                          VHS Player:
Sanyo 4 head Hifi. VHS decks also not currently connected.

I love our speakers. They're able to reproduce sound very well. The first time I heard them (after Ray installed them) was listing to the Star Wars soundtrack. Having been in Band and Orchestra in school, they were able to reproduce a bit of that feeling of sitting near the flutes with the trumpets behind you. Not tinny trumpets or screachy flutes mind you, but truly rich and full trumpets and bright and light flutes. A lot of times speakers are really good at deep bass sounds or good at treble... these do both. If I could recommend any speakers, I'd recommend these. They are night and day difference to our older Sony speakers. :D

Oh my God! A 106 inch screen! And I thought my 61" DLP was big.

And those Klipsch speakers would be pretty impressive as well. Klipsch has been around practically since hi-fi began. I remember reading impressive test reports on Klipsch horns back in the 60`s. (That`s all they made then, horn type speakers.) They should be close to my Paradigms in quality.

However, might be a bit difficult perfectly integrating the Sony sub-woofer with the rest though. Would probably take a lot of tweaking to get the proper cut off with the Klipsch mains.

With my entertainment system, I'm still stuck in the previous generation, though it works well for my purposes.
