That AstroRes upscaling is insane. Looks like how my nostalgia from over 20 years ago imagines that it looked back then. Honestly somewhat tempted by both the English and Japanese versions, even more than Shaman King.

That upscale looks great. I had forgotten about the JP-BDs for a while there but that reminded me they have that same awful smeary look all Q-Tec upscales of SD material do.

Fingers crossed they can eventually also release Seasons 2-8 and Adventure 2020.

Amazing. I never thought an uncut Japanese version would ever be released. This is like as unbelievable as something like Pocket Monsters or Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters getting an uncut release. I'm not really a Digimon fan outside the Mamoru Hosoda films, but I may buy this just for curiosity's sake and to support similar licenses.

Today is Digimon Day at MediaOCD. Time to line up all the restored footage and recut to make everything match and line up. Then we get to format the closed captions and encode for BD.
Then to see how to make the Japanese version progressive.

Digimon update: First pass of QC is complete and now I'm slowly trudging through all the places where the upscale needs manual fixing. Most are interlacing problems from the master. @astro_res fixed the vast majority, but occasionally you get this.

Five episodes – 7, 8, 10, 11 and 27 – had to be completely re-cut from the Japanese masters. @CaribouCoon took care of most of that. But then we had to font-match the English title screens. This usually involves @BradyHartel's help. Anyway, I think we got it fairly close.

There are a few places – mostly in the recaps at the beginning of each ep, where Saban tinkered with speed, reversed shots, or freeze-framed, and this almost always resulted in a single-field, half-resolution cut. These have to be recut from the previous ep, or the JPN master.

Half-field shots look gnarly on 4K displays. Look closely at the linework here. Every line item MarcFBR found on his QC report is a heart-attack avoided on my end.

Since we're doing the IVTC on the Japanese master, should have few of these problems (although we've already spotted a handful of cuts in ep12 that were just ANIMATED at half-resolution for no apparent reason). Hoping that once subs are done, that'll go much faster.

That's a good comparison to show a worst case scenario. Astro Res kind of is struggling with some of the distant line work.(See Mimi's eyelashes, Sora's face.
