    UPDATE #15

    Monday Morning Menu Mockups!

    Hello everyone,

We're back with some more menu mockups. Based on your feedback, here's round two. As with the first set, these are design sketches to get an idea of what people like and don't like, and to spark ideas. The part on the left is the main menu, and the part on the right is the submenu popup background.

(And in case you're wondering, we will match the images to the contents of the particular discs)

    ::: see post :::

Moving on, here are some mockups of the Amaray case wraps. We need two of these, one for the "traditional" wrap that has all the disc info, and the other for the flip-side, which is a "full graphics" wrap that focuses on the artwork.

    ::: see post :::

We're looking forward to your feedback!

    Robert & Natsumi

PS: If you look carefully, you'll notice that Mr. Mikimoto has made a few minor tweaks in his Eve painting since the version that was used in the Japanese release!

    May Update

Hello, everyone. We hope you're all staying safe and finding ways to keep healthy, both physically and mentally. Here's a video that we think has some useful advice.

We've spent the last month grinding away on Megazone 23 preproduction, and we've made a fair amount of progress. In addition to continuing to work on subtitle timing and proofreading, we've also started preliminary authoring on the discs!

Even though we don't have all of the final assets (such as the subtitles) yet, we have enough that we can use placeholder assets to rough out the discs and debug any programming issues. Basically, this will reduce the chance of any "gotchas" impacting the final release schedule.

As part of this process, Matt is working on some menu designs, and he'd like your opinion as to which of the following first-drafts you like (and dislike). And, of course, if you have an idea of your own, let us know! Keep in mind that we'll have two discs, so we'll need two menus.

As is our usual style, we'll have a 4:3 video loop playing in the black area on the right.

    ::: see post :::

Based on your feedback, we'll iterate on the designs.

    Best,

    Robert & Natsumi

PS: No, we're not going to tell you what the "Secret History" is. If we did, it wouldn't be a secret!

    7G Operator Auditions!

    Dear Backers,

We hope you are all well and keeping safe in these difficult times. This isn't one of those annoying "Here's what we're doing during the Viral Apocalypse to ensure you can still buy our stuff" emails; we're doing what the doctors and scientists recommend to keep ourselves and others safe, and we know you are too.

In the meantime, while we wait to find out if it's really TEOTWAWKI, we thought we'd give you something fun to do.

As you know, Mr. Miyao is creating an 8-page manga for this release, and up to 6 backers can become Portrayed Patrons and appear as background characters in the manga. We still have some of these slots available on https://animeigo.com/mz23 for a mere $900.

However, given the circumstances, we're pretty sure they won't all get snapped up, so we came up with an idea to deal with the unused slots - the Megazone 23 7G Operator Auditions!

Just go to the Auditions Google Form (you'll need a google account) and enter your name, email address, and upload your headshot and optional full-body photo (1MB max).

We'll send them to Mr. Miyao and he'll use them to fill in the unused background character shots. He'll be doing the selection, so if you can figure out what he might be looking for, you may be able to increase your chances. So "choose wisely."

May the odds ever be in your favor!

    Robert & Natsumi

PS: Natsumi insists that I tell you that "Yes, you can still buy our stuff."

    March Update

    Hello everyone,

Just a quick update to let you know how things are progressing.

We have completed first pass reviews of all the japanese subtitles, and are about half-way through the final pass; they should be completed in a week or two. Once these are done, we'll move on to the english captions; we do these afterwards because all of the music and SDH cues are largely the same.

We expect that all of the subtitles and other Blu-ray materials to be completed by late April and the disc will go into first-pass authoring then.

The artbook has been roughly laid out and is 186 pages long. We expect it will grow a bit as our crack team of combat archaeologists discover additional materials.

The Covid-19 outbreak is causing some disruptions to our schedule for producing some of the goodies, but should not affect the overall schedule. However, the cancellation of Anime Japan this year means Natsumi won't be going to Tokyo later this month, and one of the things she was going to do was coordinate the signing of the paintings by Mr. Mikimoto.

For these reasons, we've decided we can extend the deadline for signing up for the Portrait Patron reward until the end of March.

The same goes for the Portrayed Patron reward that gets you immortalized by Mr. Miyao in the manga; the price has ratcheted down to $900 (the minimum level) and we have some still left. We have also confirmed with Mr. Miyao that we'll be able to send the original artwork that features them to the Patrons!

    Best,

    Robert & Natsumi

We're pleased to open up ordering on an initial batch of goodies. We're starting with a batch based on Mr. Mikimoto's wonderful EVE artwork. We still intend to do some of our traditional items like embroidered patches and coins, but we want to wait on them until we have designs to show you.

Prices are for USA / Canada / International and include shipping. All of these items have to be shipped separately from the blu-ray because of their size & shape. In cases where we can combine items into a single shipment, we'll make a manual adjustment to the shipping cost on a case-by-case basis, but we won't be able to figure out the details of that until we actually ship. International orders may result in customs fees, though we'll attempt to mitigate them via fulfillment shipping for customers in CA/UK/EU.

    24x36" Self-Stick Vinyl Poster: US: $35 / Canada: $50 / International: $50

    24x36" Self-Stick Fabric Poster: US: $40 / Canada: $55 / International: $55

    26x20" Fabric Wall Scroll: US: $45 / Canada: $60 / International: $60

    Framed 24x18" Ink-jet Painting: US: $115 / Canada: $125 / International: $150

    Unframed 24x18" Ink-jet Painting: US: $105 / Canada: $120 / International: $125

All of the goodies are limited-edition items. We'll be making enough to cover the preorders plus a few extras to replace items lost or damaged, and that's it. They will only be available to Megazone 23 backers.

The wall scroll and paintings are available in landscape and portrait variants; in the case of the scroll, that affects the size of the mounting sticks, and in the case of the painting, the position and orientation of Mr. Mikimoto's digitized signature.

We risked our wall to test the removable self-stick materials...

We think the self-stick vinyl poster will work well if you intend to mount it to a smooth surface like artboard, and the fabric is the best choice for attaching directly to a wall.

All of these items are available for preorder now at https://animeigo.com/mz23

    Best,

    Robert & Natsumi

PS: Goodie sales count towards meeting stretch goals!

    Dear backers,

We're pleased to announce that, thanks to a steady stream of additional backers (in particular from Canada and Europe), we have passed the $175k funding mark!

    Manga! Manga! Manga!

This has unlocked the 8-page Miyao Manga bonus feature, and also 6 new Portrayed Patron rewards!
Portrayed Patrons will not only appear in the new manga, but will receive the original manga artwork page in which they appear, hand-colored and signed by Mr. Miyao! The initial price is $1500+shipping, and just as we have done with similar rewards in the past, will slowly reduce over the next few weeks until they sell out. At that point, we'll issue partial refunds as needed so everyone pays the final price.

The new reward is available on the Megazone 23 Order Page, https://animeigo.com/mz23. Scroll down and find the Patron Sets order button, it's one of the options.

This reward will only be available until February 14th, as we need to provide Mr. Miyao with information about the Portrayed Patrons promptly so that he can start work on the manga.

    HOWTO: Multiple Patron Rewards

One question we've been getting fairly often is “Can I sign up for multiple patron rewards?” The answer is yes. The way it's handled is that all but the base-level Patron rewards deliver two things; the base-level Patron reward and an additional reward. If you order an additional Patron reward on the website, when we process the order, we'll notice that you already have Patron status, and we'll refund the value of that reward to your new order ($209 for US Patrons, $230 for International Patrons).

Next Stretch Goal - Mikimoto Art!

The next stretch goal is at $200k, and if we make it, Mr. Mikimoto will create some new artwork for the packaging. However, due to scheduling constraints, we will have to reach this goal by the end of February in order to implement it. If we reach the $200k goal after that, we'll come up with an alternate add-on for the project.

    Goodies Update

We're still waiting to confirm a few final details before we open up goodie ordering. We're hoping that will happen sometime in the next few weeks.
Finally, we want to apologize for the delay in getting this update out; it was caused by a combination of wanting to announce the goodies and the fact that both of us caught a nasty strain of the California Con Crud at Anime Los Angeles. We had a lot of fun -- especially meeting some of you -- but boy did we pay for it! Bleah!

I'll be disappointed if they can't do all the dubs, mainly because you know that Discotek would have almost certainly done that. It's not the end of the world or anything but it is my most wanted feature for this set.

There's no way for us to know how much money they've collected from post-Kickstarter orders so far, until Robert Woodhead updates us on it.

If AnimEigo is able to include the Streamline dub of Part I, it should be no more difficult to sync than ADV's dub. I believe both used the same video transfer, as the Streamline audio from Image's disc stays in sync with ADV's video (only the layer change mark needed adjustment).

Also, I have a few questions regarding the version of the International dub of Part II on the Japanese BD:
-Is it complete in terms of keeping the violent and nude scenes in? A version of the dub included as part of the Aoi Garland game for PS3 was edited for such content and it raises the question of what version AE has.
-Is it in SD and hard-subbed or is it an HD transfer? I've seen video from atleast one Japanese DVD release and it had head-switching noise at the bottom of the screen, as if it was taken from an old analog tape.
-If not in HD, why couldn't AE resync it up with the better master? The dub on the old laserdisc was uncut except for a few sex scenes, which can easily be worked around as the missing footage had no dialog and only music. Also, it would do away with the Japanese hardsubs cluttering up the bottom portion of the screen. I was able to successfully re-adjust the dub audio to ADV's disc without a problem.

    Thanksgiving Update

    Hello everyone,

As many of you know, we've spent the last month in the Hell of Perpetual Shipping, sending out the rewards for our previous project, Gunsmith Cats. Now that we've emerged into the comparatively mild Purgatory of Return to Sender -- Address Unknown, we're back at work on Megazone 23.

First of all, we will be sending out the Kickstarter survey to everyone in the next day or two, to gather your initial address information. This will allow us to import that data into our project database, and also allow us to start planning the extra goodies we want to produce, and accepting orders for addons and upgrades.

Speaking of orders, since opening up signups to Canada, the UK and the EU (except for Italy), we've collected about $13k in additional orders. This puts us less than $8k from the $175k Manga stretch goal, and we're pretty confident that we'll reach that by the end of the year. But of course, anything you can do to let your fellow fans know about it will help -- the order page is at https://animeigo.com/mz23

While we were in Japan in October, Natsumi supervised the recording of the Japanese commentary track, featuring Mr. Miyao and Mr. Sato; it went very well, and everyone had a great time. Mr. Miyao is looking forward to being given the green-light for the Manga, and we can't wait to see what he comes up with. After recording the commentary, he was kind enough to draw a couple of shikishi for us…

We also picked up the HD masters for the series, and have been busy conforming them with the original DVD release. We have to do this because they are not frame-by-frame identical!

Films like Megazone are… well, they're films! Made on real film, none of this newfangled digital stuff that the kids are into these days. And real film comes on reels about 20 minutes long. So when you transfer them to video (either SD, back in the day, or HD today), you do so a reel at a time, and then you edit them together.

And sometimes that editing isn't quite the same between releases, especially if the releases are created from different transfers. At any particular reel transition, one version might have a few extra frames -- or a few less. Or there might be a few black frames inserted. Or a frame might be repeated as a still. And all of this affects the synchronization of the audio.

So we have to find a way of editing the video and audio that preserves all of the HD goodness and maintains the audio sync of all the audio tracks. Fortunately, most of the time this is fairly straightforward, because in reel-based film, the audio track rarely extends across reel breaks. Instead, it goes dead for a few frames; if you're watching an old film and the audio seems to drop out for a fraction of a second, that's probably a reel break.

The one situation where it gets really tricky is with commentary tracks, such as the original DVD commentary, because not only do the commentators talk right through the reel breaks, but the original audio is mixed in at a low level with the commentary. So we were really, really happy when a package arrived from Janice Williams and John Ledford containing the original DVD production audio, and buried in one of the ProTools projects was an unmixed commentary track!

We still had to do a little careful surgery, transplanting a breath here and there, to get things to sync over the reel breaks, but their generous assistance made it an order of magnitude easier. Once we had the commentary synced, all we had to do is remix with the adjusted dub audio. Thanks, you two!

Currently we are working on the subtitles and are probably about 25% done. We expect progress to be fairly rapid, and we'll keep you updated.

We hope you enjoy overindulging in food, online bargains, and political arguments this Thanksgiving.

    Best,

    Robert & Natsumi

    October 27 Update

    Hello everyone,

I'm just back from Japan and still a complete zombie from jetlag, but wanted to let you know that we managed to get the Megazone 23 license expanded to include Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe (excluding Italy). However, we probably won't be able to get additional rights, such as for AU/NZ.

While we were in Japan, we also had some great meetings with Mr. Mikimoto and Mr. Miyao, and we are looking forward to their contributions to the project. With the addition of the new territories, we're pretty sure that we'll hit the $200k funding point, which will unlock both the Miyao manga and new Mikimoto artwork stretch goals.

The order buttons on https://animeigo.com/mz23 have been updated to include international ordering options. Have at it!

Natsumi stayed in Japan to visit family, and she also supervised the recording of the commentary track on Friday. According to her, Mr. Miyao and Mr. Sato had a great time chatting about the film and all the people who made it come to life. They also dug up a bunch of production materials which we'll be using to improve the contents of the set, and Mr. Miyao even drew a shikishi for me!

    More news soon!

    Robert

    October Update

Just a quick update to let you know about several important developments.

First, we've opened up late ordering on our website for US customers who missed the Kickstarter. Details and order buttons can be found at https://animeigo.com/mz23

Second, and more important, we've received word that we are going to be able to expand our license outside of the USA! We are headed off to Japan on the 14th and will be finalizing the details during the trip.

As previously mentioned, post-kickstarter orders will count towards achieving stretch goals, so the new manga is very likely to happen.

Finally, during our trip we will be recording the Japanese commentary. So if you have questions about the show you'd like answered, or have other suggestions for discussion topics, please let us know! We'll pass them on.
