Eh I'm mixed about the whole "Classics" and "Essentials" lines as a whole. From what I have seen so far all the "Pros" are for the Essentials line when comparing it to the S.A.V.E. line while I like the "Anime Classics" line better compared to the new "Classics" line.

For both lines, based on the cover art released it seems they are not using slipcovers and I find the "Blu-Ray + Digital" banner unnecessary. I'm sure they are saving some money on every unit with the lack of slipcover and DVDs that they could omit that useless banner and just place a "Funimation Digital Copy" sticker on the outer shrink-wrap.

I'm actually very happy overall with the "Essentials" line as it fixes all my complaints with the "S.A.V.E." line. When displayed from the side the spine looks like the standard edition, no indication its the "Essential" release there. For the price I really can't complain about the small grey banner lol

I'm actually disappointed with the "Classics" line after being happy with the previous "Anime Classics" line. I feel like the new "Classics" line is a regression instead of an improvement in that regard. I think they should keep the slipcover for the "Classic" releases and have the banners on the slipcover only. Based on the cover art so far this doesn't seem to be the case.

While making a wish list at Right Stuf I noticed that 2 of the "Classic" re-releases (The Future Diary Complete Series + OVA & PSYCHO-PASS Season 1) actually are getting a $5 & $15 MSRP increase respectively compared to their standard Blu-Ray & DVD Combo releases (according to current listings @ TRSI).

The old Anime Classics were ugly as all hell. So glad Funimation have got rid of them. How anyone could like thick black borders and no logos on the spine is beyond me. I would still prefer that they had just dropped all of these silly brands altogether. Instead just releasing shows with different art like they did back in the day.

I never said I liked the actual border/no logo on spine from the Anime Classics releases. Actually no logo on spine actually bothers me greatly in fact, seems lazy. I'm just saying for the Classics line (since they insist on having these lines) they should have kept the slipcover for this one.

That's what I meant by a "regression instead of an improvement" when comparing the two. If they would have kept the slipcover then the two additional banners would only be on the slipcover and the cover art on the actual Blu-Ray case wouldn't need them. The only Anime Classics release I've picked up so far was Deadman's Wonderland at Walmart today just because it was the only Blu-Ray release available for it.

I've been thinking about picking up several of the shows Funi has been listing under both the Classics & Essentials lines. I have been curious though if they would include reversible covers with spines that omit the dual banners on the front and the digital copy banner on the back.

I have found 1 example of this so far. Outlaw Star does have a reversible cover with spine that removes all banners. Source (YouTube)

If anyone buys any of the Classics or Essentials versions and wants to confirm if they have reversible covers or finds any sources for any of the other releases that is out I can compile all the info in a spreadsheet for easy reference if anyone would like that.

Not happy about situation of having DVD-only for first release, only to have a BD for later releases. I have Riddle Story of Devil, Good Luck! Ninomiya-kun, Omamori Himari, and [email protected] on DVD-only and I would be force to double-dip to get Blu-ray.

Now that I know what's going on, I will stop get DVD-only when I feel that a series should've get BD in first place.

The series I would like to have on BD are four series I mentioned along with Red Data Girl and probably Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi too.

So I purchased the classic editions Tokyo Ghoul Seasons 1 & 2 and I can confirm that these don't have reversible covers with spins but they do have nice art on the reversible side. My Walmart was selling them for $25 each so I couldn't pass that up. Will post pictures when I get a chance. The funny thing is the discs they used for the first season are the Blu-Ray discs from the Collector's Edition I guess they printed too many of them

I made a spreadsheet to keep track of which have a reversible cover with spine once confirmed. So far only Outlaw Star has a reversible cover if anyone purchases a Classic or Essential edition or finds proof comment here and I will update the table.
