Anime Specialist Funimation Plans Fall Streaming Expansion To Mexico And Brazil

Funimation, a leading provider of anime content, plans to expand its streaming service to Brazil and Mexico this fall, offering select subtitled and dubbed anime series in Spanish and Portuguese.

The company, an independent joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex, already operates globally, with nine offices in six countries. The Funimation streaming service is currently available in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

News of the expansion came during FunimationCon 2020, a free, two-day virtual fan festival celebrating anime.

“Anime is special in that it speaks equally to people from different cultures, regions and languages around the world. Audiences in Latin America are among the most passionate in the world and have been clamoring for more,” Funimation GM Colin Decker said in a press release. “Expanding Funimation to Mexico and Brazil is the natural next step for us to serve those fans and extend our brands.”

Over the past year, Funimation says, it has expanded its library by nearly 20% through strategic deals with licensing partners like Aniplex and NIS America. The streaming service has about 13,000 hours of programming spanning 700 series.

Theatrical releases and merchandising are other active areas for the company. In February, before COVID-19 shuttered movie theaters in the Western Hemisphere, Funimation released My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising. The film brought in $29.1 million at the global box office, $13.3 million of that in the U.S.

Another successful release recently was a 37-disc, 30th anniversary Dragon Ball Z Collector’s Edition Blu-ray boxed set. The limited-edition set, retailing for $350, sold out.

Funimation's wholesale fulfillment partner informed us this week that they are still partially shut down due to COVID. While they are shipping new releases, no catalog (restock) orders have come out of there for around four weeks or so now. The middleman distributors and most of the big box retailers are starting to get picked clean of Funi inventory too, so I expect there to be more and more Funi items that go on backorder until they get caught up. Our inventory of Funimation's catalog is still pretty good, but we are seeing some SKUS start to get uncomfortably low. If you need a Funimation item that ends up on backorder, please be patient as we will get it shipped to you as soon as we can get more stock from Funimation.

I've talked about Funimation's wholesale fulfillment problems over the last few weeks. Their distribution partner had to shut down for the first half of May due to COVID. They reopened a couple of weeks ago and have been concentrating on shipping new releases. They are still not caught up on catalog and restock orders, and probably won't be for awhile yet. We're sourcing needed quantities of Funimation items from a number of distributors and other sources for the time being, but there may be some short delays on some products. Funi's distributor should be caught up with retailer shipments by the middle of June.

They pinned select blog post (like simulcast round-up for respective season) at top of page just like various social media outlets.

FWIW, Funimation has update their https://www.funimation.com/blog layout. It's unclear if they are planning doing any other changes on the site.

Funimation's distribution partner reopened their warehouse this week and we have started to receive product shipments again. Yeah! I expect them to be caught up with both catalog shipments and new releases in a couple of weeks.
