  • [DVD/BD] The 1 & Only Missing Extras Thread

    Widgets Magazine
A while back I made this blog post on MAL regarding missing extras, and felt like bringing it over here so more can see what extras are missing on various R1 releases over the years. The goal of this thread is to eventually be a comprehensive list of every missing extra and even DVD Easter Eggs from other releases.

    Notes
    • Whenever ADV Films would do a box set release, they usually would strip the show of extras to make the singles more appealing and to prevent the "I'll wait for the box set." mentality that leads to less money. If the disc count was different from the singles, this usually meant the extras were stripped. If the disc count was the same, there is small a chance the extras were retained. A few examples of ADV box sets that retained the extras from the singles: Blue Seed, Chrono Crusade (Holiday Edition), Gantz, Jinki:Extend, Neon Genesis Evangelion (Platinum Tin and Holiday Edition), Noir
    • For stuff in a franchise never released before, see this thread (no longer updated but still can be useful).
    • At this time this thread will only be about DVD and Blu-ray releases, not VHS or laserdisc, the latter of which is harder to find info on as ANN's encyclopedia doesn't have those releases. I may include those in the future.
    • This thread will also include notable missing inserts (mainly in regards to cases where it's not obvious like with singles as opposed to say NISA Premium Editions vs. Standard Editions), not just video extras, but the focus is mainly on video extras and DVD Easter Eggs.
    • Links in this thread will take you to the ANN entry for the show (this is so people know exactly what releases a show has that I'm referring to), and in some cases the actual extras being referred to.

Please point out any errors or omissions so I can add them to the list. This is still very much a work in-progress, especially as far as the ADV Films shows are concerned.

A note about Trigun: I think the remix release originally released by Geneon had multiple versions of the opening theme animation, but Funi's release reverted back to only having 1 version of the opening animation. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong about that, though.

That is indeed what happened, initially. I heard FUNimation corrected this mistake on their Anime Classics release, so everything comes full circle. Geneon initially screws up, fixes it, FUNimation makes the same mistake, and then fixes it. And added. I should have also remembered to include cases like that too.

Restriction from TBS? The possibility is there, but I'm not so sure about it. It's included with releases from France (Blu-ray & DVD collection sets), Germany (Blu-ray & DVD single volumes), and Taiwan (DVD single volumes).

It doesn't look like anything was directly confirmed by someone who had the re-release discs, but I'm reminded of something I asked about Hell Girl (first season) a while back. The re-release apparently has fewer discs and some extras that were included in the original singles do not seem to be listed.

Despite going for the singles in that case, and being so thankful I collected the Kanon singles right as they came out (since there were some later volumes that disappeared from print quickly due to the Sojitz debacle), I still have yet to check out the extras on either of those titles. I need to get around to that.

Since you mention booklets, that reminds me the singles of Azumanga Daioh have ones with character profiles and cultural notes that I like. I doubt any of the releases since then have had them. I've also seen it stated that Sentai's release is missing the Mini-Movie.

                      Worth noting about One Piece:

Episode 52 is missing the next episode preview for Episode 53. It's worth noting that, based off information I could find (such as an episode from a foreign dub), Toei Animation sent the episode attached with the first Special preview. Instead of dubbing the preview as is, they instead just cut it out altogether. Not sure if FUNimation had secured the special if the preview would've been intact at the end of it.

It's worth noting that Crunchyroll DID get the preview for their Spanish and Portuguese streams, though if your video is selected to English, it's cut off.

EDIT: Worth noting, that FUNimation did not include the first episode of Toriko, which was a cross over special with One Piece. They instead skip it and subtract the episode count by one as a result. This affects both FUNimation's stream and DVD release of the series.

I would like to point out that the Sentai release of Mahoromatic lacks the Ep00 and Year End Specials

Re: The 1 & Only Missing Extras Thread

Does anyone here have the singles for at least volumes 1-3 of Princess Tutu? What were on those inserts? I know from here that volumes 4-6 had Japanese cast interviews. I doubt they put those on the actual discs for the complete re-releases (ADV did put various text interviews on actual discs in the past, presumably from printed text interviews from the JP releases). I'd really like to be specific with what's on those before I put it on this list.

Also, were any of the four complete collections really missing the recaps? I remember this post and the quotes, but checking the back covers, all of them mention "3 TV Specials". Can anyone confirm if they're really missing on any of them?

So basically staff for 1-3, and cast for 4-6? Thanks.
