I decided to split into its own thread (leaving the thread prefix along & added a ? until official confirmation). Crunchyroll series URL: http://www.crunchyroll.com/kancolle

    - Interesting @AskJeromeMaz, I didn't know that Crunchyroll had the sole rights to KanColle.

    - It's one license where they have acquired all rights for certain territories.

ok. Yep. CR is operating as a licensee just like Manga or Sentai. They acquired all rights: digital, VOD, merch.

Re: Crunchyroll has license to KanColle ?

Huh, so Crunchyroll might have the home video rights to Kancolle after all. Considering that Crunchyroll had a business partnership deal with Discotek Media, I'm wondering if Discotek Media will handle the BD/DVD distribution for Kancolle in collaboration with Crunchyroll. Seeing the Kadokawa/Crunchyroll partnership deal, it's very likely that Kadokawa will negotiate with Discotek Media and Crunchyroll giving Discotek Media exclusive home video release rights for their titles (including Kancolle). Seeing how most of the recent Kadokawa titles happen to be too niche, it doesn't hurt for Kancolle and many future Kadokawa titles to be released sub-only in home video. And besides, Kancolle isn't popular enough in the U.S. to even justify dubbing the series.

If, and it's a big if, Crunchyroll has the rights for Kantai Collection discs, Blu ray has to be released from the get go. I do wonder if Discotek will insist on Blu ray after what happened with Free!

Potential Nichijou with no English audio makes Hrld sad face.

Well Nichijou left the site in like 2014 so... The deal with Kadokawa also only affects new and upcoming titles, not past ones.

As for Discotek insisting on Blu-ray, remember they're the distributor, not the publisher. Crunchyroll is the one with the home video rights and decides whether or not to do BD's.

Yes and no. You are correct that Discotek has no real say in the matter as they merely distribute. But the disc type release is not something CR gets to decide by themselves. The Japanese rights holders have the final say. While licensees often say they have "home video rights," that term itself is ambiguous and doesn't mean that they have secured bluray rights. Even if you only have DVD rights, you can claim that you have "home video rights" (and technically, you do). This was the case with Free, which Hrld mentioned. No one should blame Discotek or CR for that situation as CR was not in the disc game at that time, but the licensor in Japan was demanding that they license "all" rights. To save some money, they probably only licensed DVD home video rights. This satisfied the Japanese licensor, as their licensing person could tell his boss (probably the Director of Sales or some such position) that he had indeed sold "all" the rights to a foreign licensee, even if BD rights were technically still available.

So, there needs to be clarification. Did CR license BD rights with the entire package? If they did not, they cannot give Discotek a sub-license to release it on bluray.

It should also be mentioned that out of the other Crunchyroll titles, Arpeggio of Blue Steel was able to get a Blu-ray release but it took the DVDs getting delayed so that Discotek could release the show in a combo pack instead.

Maybe CR did get BD rights this time and both are waiting until the Japanese allows them to release it and considering it's Kadokawa, it might be a while before that happens.

Andy Hanley (UK Anime editor) has a theory:

                http://forums.animeuknews.net/viewto...502177#p502177
Given that he went on to reference the series being on Netflix, I'm convinced he was confusing it with Arpeggio of Blue Steel.
                Reference to this tweet:
                https://twitter.com/AskJeromeMaz/sta...31357053165568
[...]They've already put it on Netflix Uk so not sure if home video has any value.

Well, this could be an indication that Funimation is dubbing KanColle.

I don't think I was interested in the KanColle anime enough to buy it, though I may check out the dub. At least seeing some more movement on Crunchyroll's Kadokawa titles gives me some hope on Konosuba (hopefully that will be coming, and not too far off, though I expect FUNi may get to New Sister Devils next considering that's already been confirmed and from the same season as KanColle).

Maybe it's just more of a general reference to Hiei's curry making failures.
