The tone is darker, because it's compounded by the character focus.

Close, it's 2,3,4 and then 1. The premier episode was originally episode 4 but one of the sponsors insisted that the titular Gundam had to appear in the premier episode for marketing's sake so to appease them they just swapped the order around which makes the "first" episode jarring and disorienting, they did a few re-cuts to make that whole subsequent intro arc essentially a flashback of sorts but it's still easily noticeable how outta place the premier episode is.

Just like with the Metal Gear game series, I say go in time line order if you are experiencing the series for the very first time. The only connection 0083 has with Zeta is the announcement of the Titans and the bald commander dude in the final scene of the show. Other than that, 0083 is just a stand alone series.

In terms of timeline, this is my ideal watch order with what is out (please correct me if I mixed it up a little):

        Origins -> Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 -> The 8th MS Team -> Thunerderbolt -> 0080: War in the Pocket -> 0083: Stardust Memory -> Zeta -> ZZ -> Char's Counter Attack -> Unicorn (RE:0096) -> F91 -> Victory

Thunderbolt and 0080 can be watched either way round as they are both set in December of 0079 but yes, that is correct.

Yes, but it's like a 30 second sequence during the last 2 minutes of the final episode, making it irrelevant.

Thanks, I'll make sure to watch it in that order when it comes out.

Zeta provides enough explanation on Titan's existence on it's own. 0083 builds on what was already there and ads to the lore of the Universal Century. If viewers see it before Zeta most of the cameos and references to Zeta will go right past them. For this reason I would never recommend a new Gundam fan to watch 0083 before Zeta, however on this board I seem to be alone in feeling this way.

The above explanation is correct in regards to Victory. The first episode throws you into the story with little explanation and then they make you go through episodes leading to that point. I've never done that before but I suppose starting with 2 and going back to 1 before 5 might actually make it easier to get started.

I think anyone truly interested in viewing Gundam and doing so with the most enjoyment will need to watch it twice. Once, in release order and then once again in chronological order. Even with stuff like The Origin, a lot of the enjoyment for me comes from having already seen older series like 0079 and then seeing the younger versions of some of my favourite characters.

I truly don't understand why someone would want to watch multiple series like this in a "chronological order" the first time through - the series were made in a certain order for a reason, and it's how they were originally presented to millions of viewers. There's always going to be some sort of references to the previously released materials, regardless of their actual chronological timeline in the story. I could see doing chronological order the second or third time through, but I personally would always want to watch them in release order first.

It's not like we were really able to watch the series in release order to begin with. We just got ZZ for the first time, and Zeta was released long after CCA and 0083.

I personally watch in chronological order. Mainly because I watched every series out already. I usually recommend just the basic 0070 -> Zeta -> ZZ -> Char's Counterattack -> Unicorn.

Aren't they supposed to be making an announcement today?

Anyway, while we are in this discussion, do you guys remember what order you watched the series in?

                        My order has been:

                        Movie Trilogy
                        0080
                        Wing
                        CCA
                        F91
                        08th MS Team
                        0083
                        Original Series
                        G
                        Destiny
                        Seed
                        Zeta Movies
                        Zeta Series
                        ZZ
                        00
                        Turn A
                        Reconguista of G
                        Unicorn
                        Age
                        X
                        Thunderbolt

Oh, and I'm currently watching IBO on Toonami.

Well the day is still not over yet but the Nozomi Facebook page posted a pic of a group of Shrikes which pretty much just double confirms that Victory will be up for pre-order soon.

As for the order which I watched it was all over the place given I started when I was a kid and could initially only watch was available stateside until internet where I lived progressed enough for me to find ways to watch unlicnesed things online. But iirc the order was something like this:

                          -Gundam Wing (including Endless Waltz)
                          -Gundam 0080
                          -Gundam 08th MS Team
                          -Gundam 0079
-SD Gundam (all little spinoffs like Gaiden, the "Mk" series, and Counterattack)
