Serious Lunch to rep Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter

Japan’s Studio Ghibli and The Astrid Lindgren Company in Sweden have appointed London-based Serious Lunch to manage the international rollout of Japanese pubcaster NHK’s new series Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter.

Serious Lunch, Studio Ghibli and The Astred Lindgren Company are looking to adapt the 26-episode animated series, which aired in Japan between fall 2014 and March 2015, with an English-language broadcaster and secure international broadcast partners, excluding Japan and Scandinavia.

Based on Astrid Lindgren’s 1981 novel of the same name, the story follows a 10-year-old girl, who was born on a stormy night in a mountain fort surrounded by her parents and a loving band of robbers. When she befriends the son of her father’s rival, the drama of her friendship and family loyalties unfolds.

The series was directed by Goro Miyazaki, animated by Polygon Pictures and produced by NHK, NHK Enterprises and Dwango, in collaboration with Studio Ghibli and The Astrid Lindgren Company.

Serious Lunch Taking Goro Miyazaki Series Global

Studio Ghibli and The Astrid Lindgren Company have appointed London-based Serious Lunch to manage the international rollout of NHK’s Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter — a 26-part animated serial directed by Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea, From Up on Poppy Hill). The three companies will oversee the creation of an English language version of the 2014-15 Japanese show. Serious Lunch will be seeking worldwide broadcast partners (exc. Japan and Scandinavia) at MIFA this month.

“The magic synergy of Goro Miyazaki and Astrid Lindgren is very powerful storytelling and Ronja is an excellent female role model. Serious Lunch has been supported by UK Trade & Investment with two recent visits to Japan to seek out more trade between the UK and Japan in the animation sector, and we hope that this will be the beginning of a great collaboration,” said Genevieve Dexter, CEO of Serious Lunch.

Ronja centers on a 10-year-old girl who was born one stormy night in a mountain fort to loving parents amid a band of robbers. She grows up to be a strong and active girl who loves to explore the beautiful and frightening forest, encountering strange creatures there. She befriends the son of her father’s rival, and so begins the drama of her friendship and family loyalties.

The series was produced by NHK, NHK Enterprises and Dwango in collaboration with Studio Ghibli and Saltkråkan, The Astrid Lindgren Company, with animation created by Polygon Pictures.

If it gets picked up by an American network, let's hope the home video release is bilingual.

Well, if it's the same person involved with some of the other Ghibli dubs, I think the chances of it at least being uncut are pretty good. However, it being Bilingual is another concern all together. I think it entirely depends on who picks it up for video distribution.

Would we see some activity on the series sometime in 2016? Germany is getting DVD and Blu-ray releases as early as fall/winter 2016: LINK.

            Ronja the Robber's Daughter

            http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/gill...li-1201889030/

Amazon has ordered a new kids series narrated by Gillian Anderson, “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter.”

Based on Swedish author Astrid Lindgren’s fantasy book series of the same name, “Ronja” will be a 26-part series that follows the young daughter of a professional thief as she grows up, exploring the enchanted forest nearby and befriending members of a rival tribe.

Gorō Miyazaki, son of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, is directing the series, which will premiere later this fall and is presented by beloved animation shop Studio Ghibli and Lindgren’s Saltkrakan. Studio Ghibli gave the world animated classics like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro.”

The streaming and e-tail giant has also ordered “Little Big Awesome” from Studio Ghibli, another kids’ series that’s a hybrid of 2D animation, live action and puppetry. Tomas Dieguez created the series, which is executive produced by “Superjail!” creator Ben Gruber.

Both “Ronja” and “Little Big Awesome” will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Additionally, the service ordered another 26 episodes of preschool series “The Stinky & Dirty Show.”

Initially an afterthought, kids’ programming is becoming an arms race of sorts at the various streaming services. As more streaming services begin offering more original adult programming, one differentiator a service can offer is the ability to sate your nugget’s desire for televisual entertainment for countless hours.

BTW, wasn't exactly sure where to stick this as it has roots in several "1 and Only" threads, so that's why I made a new thread.

It premieres on Amazon on Demand on the 27th of this month with an English dub:

The English actors sound British (or that's the point?).

Sure hope we get confirmation on which languages will be included soon. Still disappointed that it was dub-only on Amazon, and I really didn't care for it.

Good to see this coming out on BD, and by a company that has released nothing but movies up until this point. I didn't think it would happen, but here it is and it fits the profile of something Shout Factory would put out with the only difference being that it's a TV series instead of a film.

Well with it being GKids, is it really THAT surprising?

Speaking of GKids, here's their confirmation of it being dual-audio:

This has been on my Amazon watchlist pretty much since it was originally released there, and I still haven't gotten to it! Now I'll just wait for this set so I can watch the Japanese version.
