  • Wow, I am glad to see a release date for the Sailor Moon S Movie. It is before the last part of SuperS as well, which is good. Though I am surprised that they haven't listed the SuperS Movie on BD/DVD Combo at the same time as the S Movie.

    • Bummer, I was kind of hoping for a nice trilogy box set done in the same style as the season sets with a booklet that showed off things from the movies (including a cast list).

I also hope the cropping of the S movie is better on BD than it was in theaters.

There might be a delay as Amazon has a December 18th release date for the combo pack.

What, a Sailor Moon release get delayed? Never.

Too bad Viz didn't bother to delay the first half so they could have actually fixed the god damn booklet in their collector's edition.

At the rate they're going though, we probably won't see Stars until 2020, which will probably be just in time for Toei to finally properly remaster the show and Viz can start rereleasing it with video quality that doesn't suck.

Viz Media has their product listings up and it's November 13th (Amazon shows the same now).

                • I still don't get why they even bothered with DVD only releases when the DVD comes with the BD. People can just buy that. Hell, if people still don't have BD player then they probably live off of Ramen Noodles every day and can't even afford a DVD player and TV.

I have to disagree. Sailor Moon is one of those brands that has reach beyond the anime fandom and it is still worthwhile to make the show as accessible as possible on physical disc. As an anecdote, I recently bought both parts of season 1 on DVD only for my friend's daughter. Part of the reason was because I wasn't sure if they even owned a blu-ray player. But the big reason was that it was much easier to spend $40 on a gift than $80-$100 for the combo packs.

                    • Sure, but you had a choice. If you didn't have a choice, you wouldn't have even thought about not buying the BD. I think it's a waste of time to even bother doing DVD releases on their own in this day and age. Then again, I think it's dumb to release BD on its own when it comes packaged with the 4K UHDs. Just do a 4K, BD, DVD combo pack and be done with it.

                      • In Sailor Moon's case, the current master is just (poorly) upscaled SD, so the difference isn't huge. I would argue that the SD image looks less awful when simply upscaled with a Blu-ray player. The lossless audio and bonus features are really the only benefit of getting the Blu-ray release IMO. Even then, the simple audio mix doesn't get much boost, and the bonus features largely just consist of cast interviews and convention panels. The movies are different though, since they were properly restored in HD and look gorgeous.

There's a lot of reasons for still releasing individual DVDs though, mostly because there ARE people left that still strictly collect them. Also, combo packs are more expensive to produce, and plenty of Blu-ray collectors don't want to pay for an extra DVD they don't want and won't ever need. As for 4K UHD combos, the format is still more expensive than Blu-rays, and most collectors still haven't upgraded or don't plan to yet. It makes a lot of sense to release a $15 Blu-ray edition for the vast majority of collectors than solely a $25 combo pack for the growing-but-still-niche crowd collecting 4K UHDs.

                        • Not to mention there are some stores that either won't sell certain Blu-ray sets or will but at a much later date. For example, when Paramount released the South Park season 1-5 set on Blu-ray, not all Wal-Mart stores had it and in my case, it required going to a far store to find and pick it up and then when seasons 6-10 came out, both sets were available at the nearby store saving me the trouble of having to go back to the store where I bought 1-5.

Actually, I wouldn't have considered getting it at all if there was no DVD only option as the price for season 1 would have been too generous for a gift.

But my personal story aside, all I'm saying is that there is still a market for this show outside of us who have high end entertainment set-ups and access to high-speed internet. A "one-size fit all approach" has its limitations in regards to price and is harder to get into bigbox retail. The reason VIZ still releases multiple editions is to allow retailers and consumers to pick out which option best works for them.
