The show has been broadcast on NHK HD since 2015 and despite also being a Q-Tec FORS upscale, it's better than Viz's upscale.

They also teased that R and the movies will be coming to BD as well and R will be interesting because from reports I had read, they cut one of the eyecatches from that season's broadcast, similar to how one of Stars' eyecatches is cut from Viz's streams on Hulu.

As for the movies, I look forward to the Blu-ray comparisons because assuming they don't DNR them to hell like Viz did with R & Make up Sailor Senshi, they might have a better release for those as well.

Yeah, but unless the Japanese releases have the new dub on them, they're worthless to me.

Is that the aspect ratio it's supposed to be?

That's a good question. Pioneer's original DVDs are 4x3, and if that's the original aspect ratio, I won't be replacing them with a 16x9 crop. On the other hand, if the original DVDs had the sides chopped off, then I will get the new version, as long as it's correctly framed.

It's the same as the DB/DBZ movies (pre-Battle of Gods) where it was animated in 4:3 but with 16:9 in mind and was cropped that way for theaters.

                      More info here: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/rumor/movies/

The thing is that Toei has had no problem giving companies the 4:3 versions of the Sailor Moon movies along with them in 16:9 as both are actually included on the Italian DVDs for all 3 and on the French DVD of the S movie* so it sucks that Viz either did not get them or won't do anything with them. If it's because of Blu-ray then they could have just included it as an SD extra similar to how Discotek is handling Arcadia Of My Youth's 4:3 version (and those in SD would most likely look better than their DNR'd 16:9 versions despite being similar to the masters Pioneer/Geneon had).

*With the French DVD from Kaze, the S movie's 4:3 version was treated as an extra while the R & SuperS movies had their respective specials included as extras which is most likely why those two were released 16:9 only.

Yeah, AFAIK just about all Toei-animated films (including stuff done for the US like The Transformers: The Movie) were done in 4:3 until Toei went digital. As I've said before, cropping to 16:9 might be similar to how they were shown in most theaters, but it's not always the best way to view them, so it would be ideal if both versions were included. The cropping can get pretty annoying, since I remember specific instances in the Slam Dunk movies where a character's head is cropped off while he's speaking.

...and here I thought open matte wasn't a thing for animation. I understand it for live-action films, but with animation, you have a lot of people spending time drawing and painting things in a 4x3 frame only to have part of their work left unseen in 16x9? Why not just animate in 16x9 from the start if that was the intent. Or maybe they wanted to preserve the 4x3 frame for home video release, since that was the time before 16x9 home displays...

I'll be reading reviews on the Sailor Moon film re-releases first, for sure. If they are indeed including the specials as I seem to recall them saying, I'll probably end up getting them anyway after all. I'll still have my Pioneer DVDs either way.

Toei used to release their films letterboxed on VHS/LD in Japan, but gave the 4x3 versions to overseas licensors. Nowadays, they seem to be giving overseas licensors the cropped versions used on the Japanese DVD/BR releases.

I don't see why they wouldn't be since they were theatrical movies. They're probably like teh Dragon Ball movies and Transformers and animated in 4x3, but envisioned in 16x9. As such, the 16x9 is the proper ratio.

And since they knew the top and bottom wouldn't be seen in theatres there are often unfinished bits of artwork in those areas, making the 4:3 versions look weird at times..
