Oh thank God they fixed the subs on the new Patlabor BDs.

I just got the Special Edition today I have looked at all 2161 minutes yet. They haven't fixed the 3rd movie were the film has black borders all around and the minipato is swimming in black boarders.

      • I sent a copy of this to my brother for his birthday. I already have all the Sentai individuals but the set actually looks really nice in person even though it's not a true "Limited edition" and with the subs improved I'll spring for it again. Only the third time I have bought the TV and ovas and the 4th time for the films, lol...

        • So are the subtitle issues all through the series or in just a few spots on the older release?

Ah, the windowboxing issue, pretty sure not much could be done there since this was present in other Bandai Visual movie BDs at the time of it's release.

              • Great to see some of these problems brushed up. Of course with the age of this show that they aren't going to get everything perfect, but they are doing whatever they can, and fixing the subs is the biggest thing.

Out of curiosity, I dug out the old Geneon special edition to see how they compared to those screenshots in that twitter post above. Sure enough, the borders are on the old DVDs as well. Minipato looks exactly the same too.

                  • I had just started watching the Patlabor OVA Blu-Ray in the past week, and was a bit struck as I began by how big the subtitles were. While I try to avoid "deal-breaker" rhetoric, the news the discs in this new collection are at least a bit different did get my attention. The only problem is I've already made three big orders from the Right Stuf holiday sale, and pretty much run out of both other appealing titles on sale and the preorders I was using to bulk them up to "free international shipping." Maybe the new collection won't have sold out by the next Sentai-and-company sale.

Still, I am remembering how I'd rushed to buy the CPM Patlabor DVDs on hearing that company was going out of business, then sat on them for years with the vague thought "it's better to have a well-spoken-of title to watch than to have watched it and be left with all the uncertainties of future titles," only to open the OVAs at last right around the time when the series was license-rescued...

                    • So when people say they "fixed" the subs on these complete collection discs, you mean they just increased the margins so the subtitles now fit entirely within the 4:3 frame? Because that didn't bother me at all. But I thought I remember people found some real problems with the subtitles, like where certain subs were displayed for too long or too short. Were any of those issues fixed? I can look for the glitch disc threads if it helps...

^Confirmed, he also mentioned in that first post about the new subs being anti-aliased.
