    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    MAIDEN JAPAN ANNOUNCES LICENSE OF
    PATLABOR OVAS!

HOUSTON, January 15, 2013— Maiden Japan today announced its acquisition of the classic police action-comedy PATLABOR. The original 7 episode OVA series is directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) with scripts by Kazunori Ito (Dirty Pair), character designs by Akemi Takada (Kimagure Orange Road), mechanical designs by Yutaka Izubuchi (Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack) and music by Kenji Kawai (Vampire Princess Miyu).

Drunk drivers are bad, but put a drunk driver in a giant robot called a Labor and you’ve got a disaster waiting to happen. And when REAL criminals get their hands on those same giant robots, the cops need giant robots of their own just to maintain the status quo, right? Well, in any case, that’s the logic behind the development of the Patlabor program and special Labor Crime units like Japan’s Section 2. But what logic fails to take into account is where to find police officers who’re equally conversant with both robots and the regulations? And THAT’s where the motley crew of Section 2, Division 2 comes in! With ridiculously perky tomboy Noa Izumi and gun-happy madman Isao Ohta as primary Labor pilots and the impossibly laid back Captain Goto in what passes for command, SV2 is ready to hit the streets with their twenty ton feet! But will they be taking a byte out of crime or have they bitten off more than they can chew? The law of the land and the laws of robotics are about to collide in MOBILE POLICE PATLABOR!

Maiden Japan will be distributing PATLABOR in conjunction with home video distributor Section 23 (Clannad, High School of the Dead, Appleseed,) with the original OVA series to be released in bilingual English DVD, BD and digital formats.

Awesome! My initial reaction was "meh, good for people who want it, but I already have the CPM release"; then I noticed it was getting a BD release as well! I'll definitely be getting the BD release on day 1.

        What the fuck!?

        Did anyone see this coming?

The noises coming out of me right now are not human. Excuse me while I froth out the mouth.

Nice. I only have the TV series and the movies, so I'll be picking this up when it releases.

Wow. Between this and TRSI's announcement of classic Cobra TV, today is an awesome day! :D

Re: Maiden Japan licenses Patlabor OVAs

I had a hidden suspicion that someone had license rescued the Patlabor OVAs in North America. Madman Ent (AU) has been holding on to their license (TV & OVA) for quite a while now with very little info. In no way I anticipated a pick-up from Maiden Japan. It will be interesting to see if Maiden Japan will license the TV series as well.

They're actually going to release this on BD? That is a huge surprise since I was always under the impression everything Patlabor sold like crap in the US. I'll definitely be picking this up.

Somebody please license at least the Oshii films for BD.

This is exciting. I guess I'll have to see about selling my old CPM set, because I'd much rather own this on Blu ray.

That's definitely the biggest surprise out of this (outside of Maiden Japan license rescuing this). I didn't think anyone would release this on Blu-ray in North America. It will really be interesting to see what other Blu-ray releases they will roll out in 2013.

Sounds interesting. I have the movies (Japanese BDs with English subs) but never got the OVA.

I'm looking forward to this, especially if is going to be released on Blu-ray (and if the video quality is decent).

I also wonder if they'll release more Patlabor after this (as I never got the TV series and other OVAs either).

                        No Blu-Ray, No Buy. Seriously, it's 2016.

This was unexpected. I've enjoyed the Patlabor series enough, over the years, that I'll be keeping my eye on things to see how this BD release gets handled.

I'm quite happy at the moment. If ADV's BDs are pretty close to the quality of the Japanese release, I'll buy the show yet again.

When I heard CPM had gone bankrupt, I rushed to order all of its Patlabor releases, remembering some of the series from my university's anime club... but I suppose the thought "once I've watched it, I won't have it to watch" kept me from actually opening the boxes. A somewhat wry reaction to this announcement fades a bit when I hear of Blu-Rays, though... In any case, it is sort of interesting to see Nozomi and Discotek being joined in the "licensing decades-old stuff" category.
