  • I think the Golden Globe nomination for Mamoru Hosoda's Mirai is proof enough of their advantage with awards lobbying. FUNi tried their awards luck three times with his films with very little success. I'm sure GKIDS can work their magic for Makoto Shinkai too. It's about time a non-Ghibli anime film gets an Oscar nomination.

ADK Restructures, Acquires All of Anime Company d-rights

IP management to fall under new ADK Emotions subsidiary

Japanese advertising agency Asatsu-DK (ADK) divided itself into ADK Holdings, ADK Marketing Solutions, and ADK Creative One as part of a restructuring on Tuesday. On Friday, the agency will establish a new subsidiary named ADK Emotions.

ADK Holdings will oversee the other three companies going forward. ADK Marketing Solutions will focus on business and marketing, while ADK Creative One will focus on creative works for the advertising company. ADK Emotions will focus on IP management; Journalist Tadashi Sudo reported for Animation Business Journal that the agency's anime endeavors will fall under this umbrella.

Sudo also reported last month that Asatsu-DK acquired all of the anime financing and rights management company d-rights (B-Daman, Beyblade) from its former co-owner Mitsubishi Corporation on December 20. d-rights is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Asatsu-DK.

Asatsu, Inc. merged with Dai-Ichi Kikaku Co., Ltd. to form Asatsu-DK in 1999, and it is currently Japan's third-largest advertising agency. Asatsu and Dai-Ichi Kikaku were involved with production of anime such as Mazinger Z, Kyojin no Hoshi, and Yōkai Ningen Bem. Asatsu-DK has been involved with production of various Precure, Gundam, Doraemon, and Crayon Shin-chan anime. Asatsu-DK acquired 84.01% of shares in animation studio Gonzo in 2016. Boston-based investment firm Bain Capital purchased Asatsu-DK in March 2018.

d-rights was established in 1988, and Mitsubishi Corporation bought the company in 2001. Asatsu-DK acquired a 51% share of the company in 2015.

      • I'm wondering if this'll mean anything in regards to Sunrights or not, since they were essentially supposed to be the D-Rights distribution arm for select titles in the west...

Many @thedigitalbits readers have asked why it was so hard to find copies of some new #4K #UltraHD & #Bluray titles over the holiday season. The reason is there's a dearth of disc replication capacity in North America. Only one plant remains of the many open at the height of DVD.

              • Yeah, Shout Factory cited that as the main reason for their many title delays recently. It also caused a lot of catalog titles to go out-of-stock on Amazon for extended periods if the discs needed new pressings.

A special message from Tatsuya Ishiguro, the producer of the anime The Island of Giant Insects, coming soon!

                      EDIT: https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-ne...-insects-anime

Crunchyroll's online streaming catalog is getting bigger to the tune of another new title (and a horde of giant, man-eating arthropods), because The Island of Giants, an anime based on the survival-horror manga written by Yasutaka Fujimi and illustrated by REDICE, is coming to Crunchyroll in 2019. The details for the release are as follows:

                      Territories: Worldwide except Asia
                      Launch details: TBA

                      • With Kyo Kara Maoh! licensed by Discotek Media, it brings up some interesting possibilities for future licenses from NHK Enterprises. What about possibilities like Baby Steps (used to stream on CR), Erin (used to stream on CR), The Story of Saiunkoku, and/or The Twelve Kingdoms?

                        Some of the titles note:
                        - Anime Sanjuushi (The Mark of the Musketeers)
                        - Agatha Christie no Meitantei Poirot to Marple (Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple)
                        - Baby Steps (Seasons 1 & 2)
                        - Daa! Daa! Daa! (UFO Baby)
                        - Moshidora (Drucker in the Dug-Out)
                        - Element Hunters
                        - Erin
                        - Kawa no Hikari (Light of the River)
                        - Mujin Wakusei Survive (Planet Survival)
                        - Petite Princess Yucie
                        - Soar High! Isami
                        - Telepathy Shoujo Ran (The Telepath Girl)
                        - The Story of Saiunkoku (Seasons 1 & 2)
                        - The Twelve Kingdoms
                        - Twin Spica
                        - Yuki no Joou (The Snow Queen)
                        - Zettai Shounen (Absolute Boy)

                        • I would LOVE Daa! Daa! Daa! and Story of Saiunkoku the most! Twin Spica would be cool too. ALL of these would be awesome, really.

                          • Of those from NHK Enterprises, I'd say that Beast Player Erin is definitely a possibility, especially since it's no longer on CrunchyRoll. Saiunkoku & Twelve Kingdoms are also good possibilities, while Twin Spica & Uninhabited Planet Survive at least have some sort of cult fandom to work off of. Finally, as a personal pick, let's see the Agatha Christie anime be given an official English release, because why the hell not?
Come Visit The Land of Obscusion... Maybe you missed a title the first time around.

                              • Of these titles, Saiukoku is the one I want to get rescued the most. It's long overdue for one and it unfortunately came out at a time when DVD saturation was uprooting the industry that this went largely unnoticed. While I don't know much about most of the other titles, I would be all for Discotek licensing them and giving them a new lease on life in a time where things have changed.
