It's good to hear that the box will fit either version of the two seasons, from what I can tell.

My copy of the LE is on order with TRSI!

Because the Season 2 box is oversized, I'm not sure that I'm going to use it for Spice & Wolf. It'll either get recycled, or something else will be shoved into it in order to make better use of my shelf space.

My copy of the LE is on hold from TRSI until it ships!
My copy of Season 1 has been sent, but my order for the S2 LE still shows "on order" with TRSI. The "Set" and coin are shown as reserved, but it seems that my discs haven't arrived, yet.

Correction: I spoke too soon, actually. What's being held is actually another title that I order, and Season 2 still says on order, like yours.

I should stop skimming and misremembering these things.

My S1 says "Reserved for your Order" while S2 still says "On Order from Manufacturer".

EDIT: S2 says "Reserved for your Order" now too.

Got my S1 vol and it looks like the PQ is standard FUNi fare with some EE and minor smudging. It's better than the DVDs (DC-UC tests show better than SD scaling), albeit with a bit of black crush and slightly more saturated colors.

Funi's all over the map these days with their upscales - waiting for reviews/screenshots before ordering seems to be the only safe bet. Don't know where he got the idea it wasn't an upscale. That down/up resizing always results in a little blurring - a slight bit of blurring doesn't mean it isn't an upscale. Don't know what's up with the brightness either. The OP and ED are much darker than the JP BD, but the episodes themselves are much brighter than the JP BD.

Didn't think I'd be taking screencaps now of a BD box I've had for over two years. I took comparison shots of everything except for his first shot, because it's not from the first episode, and I didn't feel like hunting it down.

As for it being produced in 720i, that results in combing during many shots in the episodes themselves (but not in the OP/ED). But I find that forcing a blend deinterlace (even though the video is 1080P) during playback does wonders for getting rid of that. Blend deinterlacing is lazy and not proper deinterlacing, but you know what, here it works really well. It certainly looks better and I can't see any actual loss of detail.

There's an avisynth script out there that should produce better results, but after quite a bit of tinkering with it and never getting it to work, I just gave up on that.

What's this, the second or third time Funi has released an upscale when an HD source is available?

Re: Spice and Wolf (Seasons 1 & 2)

Sigh, I had a feeling it was something like this. I got mine earlier and was wondering why this looked so much worse than the bd-rips I have (wasn't expecting super pristine HD, but at least something that was comparable). I even popped in my dvd copy just to see, and those dvd's looks better than the BD, IMO. I consider myself to be very, very forgiving when it comes to Funimation upscales, but this one is pretty bad.

Oh well. Guess, since I've recently gone into the import game, I'll try and find this one.

I'll stick with DVD then. Hopefully, S&WII won't look as bad. I'm not especially picky about video quality, but even I can notice the difference.

Well, I'm glad my copy didn't ship early from TRSI. Just sent them e-mail to cancel it.
If anything I'll stick with the DVDs, not this crappy upscale.

Unfortunately, my copy came over the weekend, though I do appreciate the Japanese BD comparison shots and the confirmation that Funi's release does indeed look like shit.

Oh well, thought I'd take a chance on this one, since Japan already had a BD and figured Funi would just use those masters, but lesson learned...

Not sure where I said it wasn't either. To clarify, the BD looks better than the DVD upscaled to 1080p despite the EE, smearing, blackcrush/oversaturation. Yes that sounds wrong, but upon reviewing the DVDs for this comparison, the DVDs look that bad (although without the contrast/brightness and other problems). I already knew it was an upscale; it's just that on this particular title, the DC/UC comparisons look better than other titles where the DVDs have a PQ advantage over the upscaled BD. I'm serious here; yes this isn't FUNi's better upscaled releases, but to me in this case, it does look better than the DVD release (after assessing an A-B in realtime and DC/UC with the least destructive upscaling filters). I personally wouldn't consider this an atrocity like the early Champloo or TSR disappointments.

I don't know, I kind of felt that way initially after popping in the BD, but after wondering how the DVD stacks up in comparison, I thought it'd be wise to take them off the shelf for review. In general, to me the BD is better even if I might need to correct for contrast values. I sure don't see the compression, ringing, blurry mess of the DVDs. Yes, the BDs have EE and smearing, as I've already pointed out, but it's minimal compared to the general ugliness on the DVDs.

From that line. It gives the impression you don't think it's an upscale. At least that's how I read it, and at least a couple more people.
