    Hey guys, are you ready to go to video nerd school? Got some stuff to explain about film grain, anime remasters, and HDR. Since I’ve done quite a few anime in 4K/HDR remasters at this point, I think it’s time for some explainey.

    Virtually every 4K remaster out of Japan has been scrubbed clean of film grain, and like most fans, I assumed it was because most Japanese consumers don’t like it (or so Amazon reviews would indicate). While that is probably a factor, I discovered there’s a tech reason too.

    It turns out, film grain gets BOOSTED, sometimes quite intensely, by HDR coloring.
    You see, HDR (rec.2020) colorspace actually has a much wider range of both color and brightness than film does. And with anime being all about vivid colors, the expectation is to push those colors.

    When making anime “correct looking” HDR (there is no actual “correct” since this is a new format), everything gets boosted. It's why the effect is so cool: it’s super intense without being blown out.
    35mm color is closest to DCI/P3 color limitations. Not far from HD’s rec.709.

    The problem is, that boosting takes the film grain from being “normal/as expected” 35mm grain to being SUPER INTENSE WHY IS THE SCREEN MADE OF SAND. Just how intense varies wildly based on film stock, generation of the footage, exposure, and what colors.

    I discovered this on Robot Carnival, which we didn’t de-grain at all, but is softer than most 4K scans. We did have to apply some subtle filtering to get the grain to stand out a bit less, but some effects (most notable on Deprive) still have very harsh grain that isn’t ideal.

    I’m pretty happy with the final result on Robot Carnival, but I can see why another producer would ask for it to be scrubbed clean. It is a little distracting in places and I expect at least one negative Amazon review because of it.

    Anyway, this stuff is really hard and best practices are just now starting to be sussed out. I expect the vast majority of 4K anime remasters to be thoroughly degrained in the future, and TBH as long as detail isn’t missing, I’m fine with that. In some cases it’s probably better.

    As for adding film grain back in once the HDR conversion is done… That might be an option but OMG I don’t even want to think about adding even more processing time. Maybe in 5 years when we’re all running super-optimized 96-core ARM CPU’s optimized for video.

    So, in short, vintage anime does not exist in HDR originally, and film grain makes the conversion process much harder and less seamless. So, going forward into this brave new world of 4K/HDR remasters, we should keep our expectations in check. This is an inexact science. [FIN]

    I included Aniplex Japan titles that were announced (or close to it) by Aniplex of America. Aniplex Japan titles like Wandering Son and Dog Days weren't handled by Aniplex of America (at least they never publicly announce it).

    Day Break Illusion was announced by Aniplex of America with home video release (of which never materialized).

    Titles listed on this Crunchyroll page: https://www.crunchyroll.com/publisher/Aniplex are not all Aniplex of America titles (that page use to say Aniplex before it was changed to Aniplex of America). One recent example to mention would be 86 EIGHTY-SIX (Aniplex JP titles handled by Crunchyroll only with no Aniplex of America involvement).

    Quick question: For the Unreleased Anime License table, shouldn't Aniplex streaming titles like Wandering Son and the first 2 seasons of Dog Days be included alongside titles like Day Break Illusion since they've also been removed from streaming recently?
