Teared up when this was announced I'm not gonna lie. This was my most wanted Anime License. The ride I went on when S'more came along and fucked it up was stressful. With Discotek's emergence in the following years from indie studio to well something abit more than that I've remained so hopeful that this day would come and here it is. The waiting is over.

Cautious about the Blu Ray but knowing it has a new transfer has me hopeful. It'll certainly beat the S'More DVD set with the Toei webrips thats for sure.

Throwing in the TV specials too is just the icing on the cake. Though I doubt we'll get the dub for those. I forget who did them but I can live without them anyway.

Now they really will need to put Eternal Fantasy out on Blu Ray as well. Hopefully that'll be included in the Movie set they talked about.

GE999 TV: 113 eps is a lot!! But the masters looked really good, and they upscaled very nicely. Now working on the subs. The translation was fine but they really needed a proofreading pass. @Schmullus1 is on it.

Oh yes! We almost forgot! The Esteemed @ZackDavisson also helped us with the subtitles on the GE999 movies! Helping us get the translation up to snuff with the current Leiji releases.

The films will be single releases. Just the original film and Adieu for right now.

It's at least a few months away -- the encode and subtitles are done but authoring hasn't been started yet.

The movies, which I'm sure people will see soon, are indeed the same "restored" masters from the JP BDs a few years back. There was no bringing back what was removed as part of their aggressive de-graining process, but we did add some artificial grain back in so it would at least FEEL like a film, and to hide the general smeariness. We used a plug-in that emulates specific film stocks, and it was sooooo slow. Each movie took a week of 24h CPU time to process!!

I'm fairly confident that, while neither will be perfect (I can only work with what I have), they will be at least on par with the best releases that have yet been produced, if not a bit better. Hopefully it will please most people, but if you're satisfied with the existing Japanese releases and you don't need subtitles, our release probably won't be a HUGE improvement.
                  Interesting note about the movies.

While I'm pleased the TV series BD upscale is sourced from the grain intact DVDs I have to question why we couldn't have just got the DVDs? Given a choice between the two I would totally pick the DVDs. I'll buy the BDs for sure but still...

Yeah I'm kinda disappointed with that revelation about the movies encode. When they said they would have something better than what the JP BDs got this isn't quite what I expected. I mean sure it'll look less smeary but the detail is still lost. I have both on Pre-Order and I guess they'll be better than the Korean BDs I have but yeah it's still disappointing.

Seriously hate how Toei have handled some of their titles. To think at some time when they were making those Galaxy Express 999 Movie BDs they would have had a beautiful grainy transfer and rather than give us that they DNR'd it to hell. So so depressing, especially since I think it's the only Anime movies they've put out that they did that to? Wish they would do a reissue or something. I mean the Arcadia BD looked so good!!

I have no interest in this series but even if I did, I would have preferred SD Blu-ray and with 113 episodes, it would be easy to put them all on two discs rather than cram them all on 14 DVDs (maybe not an accurate number but they have released 8-9 episode DVDs before).

The Japanese DBZ movie BDs also had heavy DNR applied...though it got overshadowed by the news about the censored middle fingers in movies 11 & 12. There was also I believe a few Digimon movies that also looked bad.

Received my copies of the Discotek movie BDs late last week. So far, I've only had time to watch the first film.

I know there's been a lot of discussion on the picture concerns (which I was unaware until I went through this thread), but there is also an odd editorial decision on the English dub audio track. For some reason, the English versions of the songs "Taking Off" and "Galaxy Express 999" have been replaced with the original Japanese versions. I popped in my Discotek DVD from a few years back to compare and it does retain the English songs on the dub track.

Not sure what prompted the song replacements on the BD's English dub audio . . . and it's certainly not a deal-breaker . . . but it is unfortunate.

The original VHS release of Viz's dub had the insert songs in Japanese with subtitles.

Yeah, Justin went into more detail about that...

                                https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=131

Happy that you guys seem satisfied with the disc! Glad the weeks spent rendering the grain were worth it!

As for the dubbed songs, those were actually from a Japanese soundtrack and were never supposed to be part of the dubbed presentation. (They're not on the Viz VHS releases.) We're not entirely sure where the old Discotek DVD got the dub track from (it was done some time ago) but we got the original dub master for this BD and it wasn't on there.
Here's another one of the comparisons posted there.

                                https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=16150413

JP DVD / JP BD / US BD

(The latter's a backup because, as I have learned with the old Sailor Moon Crystal comparison from years ago, Screenshot Comparison can wipe the site clean again but the images are permanent if you have the direct links.)

More details on the release from Brady (with screencaps)
