One of the way to measure how long someone has been into anime is to see which Gundam*generation they come from. For one of those generations, the Gundam SEED*generation, they’re about to feel old as it’s coming on the 10th anniversary in 2012. And Sunrise is looking to celebrate (i.e. make money) by giving the [...]

And of course the only worthwhile thing to come out of the whole deal is the Seed Mode animation that's been used to decent comedic effect in multiple titles over the past decade.

If Bandai releases this in the US on BD with the dub, I'll definitely get it. I liked the first SEED, but I highly doubt I will spend another dime on Destiny.

Of course, is there any word on Wing getting an HD update?

Maybe it's because I watch a lot of stuff from the '60s and '70s, but I find it hard to imagine anything from the last 10 to 15 years as being 'old'. Some of the early '90s shows maybe,(since they've still got a strong '80s influence) but a lot of it still seems pretty fresh to me.
I used to wonder what the big deal was with Seed. One corner of fandom loathed it, while another side swore blind is was the best thing ever. I've only seen the first episode, and I wasn't interested in it enough to continue on. Can't say I hated it though.

It already did, back in 2007. The Endless Waltz OVAs are the only installments to have actually made it to Blu-ray thus far, though.

A big part of the interest, good or bad, in Gundam Seed was that the Gundam installment prior to it was Turn A Gundam, which was in many ways old-school Tomino material rather than something you'd expect to have been made in 2000, as well as the oft-maligned G-Saviour live action film. So, fandom was expecting something flashier and more colorful, and Seed certainly delivered that. Additionally, there was still the fandom love for Gundam Wing, and the hope among newer fans that the next Gundam series would be something vaguely like that. And because the anime zeitgeist of the early '00s required angsty teens and hyper-emotional content and storytelling in order to attract attention.

So, it was basically set up in every way possible to be an attention-getter, intentionally and unintentionally.

What Seed has going for it is that it does succeed in providing strong characterization and mecha-porn. You care about the characters you're watching, you get involved in what's going on, and the action is appropriately action-y. The characters cry more often! The backpacks keep getting bigger!

Where it falls short is that the director and writer were very ill-suited to shepherding a large-scale action-politics war epic, and so you end up with a show that lurches and stumbles through its own plot points, and characters run around doing things that make no sense. It's like they were trying to replicate Tomino's inability to write or pay attention, but managed to fail equally in a new and creative way. Inexplicable plot developments, obnoxious characters, and so on, all built around a framework that randomly steals badly from Tomino's own Gundam installments in a desperate grab to attract attention. I mean, one can forgive things that don't hold up to actual logic if it just works with the flow of a story, but not when the breakdowns are so glaringly obvious because the staff has backed themselves into a corner or have gotten tired of something they started. And Seed Destiny makes a strong bid to introduce a main character that rivals any of Tomino's creations for worst anime character ever, so I don't know if the staff should be commended for their effort or maligned for unleashing that idiocy upon us.

The constituent elements are strong, but they're poorly abused and misused so that the end result is a deficient mish-mash, which is a regrettable waste of potential.

All of which is put strikingly into perspective by Gundam Seed Stargazer, three 15-minute ONAs overseen by a different staff, that provide a more compelling story, more engaging characters, better action, and higher quality than Seed and Seed Destiny themselves did over the span of 100 regular episodes. I guess this is where I'm supposed to use my handy Gundam Seed chart again.
