Mr. Osomatsu Episode 1 to Be Pulled From Home Video, Streaming
    posted on 2015-11-04 22:15 EST

Anime's episodes 2-3 to be completely reanimated for home video

The official website of the comedy television anime series Mr. Osomatsu (Osomatsu-san) announced on Thursday that the first Blu-ray Disc/DVD volume of the series will not include the first episode. The second and third episode will also be completely reanimated. The first Blu-ray/DVD volume is slated for a January 29 release. (Note: A previous version of this article noted that episodes 2 and 3 of the show will be reanimated. This is not correct, only the first episode will be completely reanimated, and episodes 2 and 3 will remain the same on the home video release. We apologize for the error.)

    [...]

In a press conference on October 29, Yūichi Takahashi of TV Tokyo apologized for the series' third episode. The episode contained a parody of the Anpanman children's anime character. The first and second episodes of the show also contained parodies of many other series, such as Attack on Titan, Boys Over Flowers, and Sailor Moon.

Japan does not have a parody exception or provision in its copyright law. Therefore, making parodies of copyrighted works may illegally violate a copyright owners' "right to maintain integrity," if performed without the copyright holder's prior consent.

It's worth noting ANN corrected the mention of Episode 2 and 3. Those two won't be completely reanimated like they originally reported, just the first episode.

Sigh... Japan really needs a parody clause or something...

It's a shame episode 1's getting redone, seeing as all those shout-outs were part of the point. So I'm wondering what sort of alterations we'll be seeing. The "Dekapanman" skits in a later episode did already get redone due to complaints about the disrespect to Anpanman, which kind of proved the point of the skits (about censorship) and removed some of the reason why he was getting shot for being inappropriate. I'm wondering how the views on parodies will affect later episodes or plans, seeing as this announcement came so shortly after that other controversy.

Though I also remember, there was an episode of Pokemon that got totally redone because a trainer was a shout-out to the lead character of the anime Dokonjo Gaeru, and they worried about copyright concerns and an issue coming up from that. So parodies and in-jokes can be risky.

What's worth noting about the Pokemon episode is that from what I recall, one of the broadcasters that was several weeks behind the main network in Japan, got the episode and the animation had already been completely re-done for the character and several lines re-recorded, suggesting that they had already intended to replace the Episode for future broadcasts when they made that episode. My guess is they got permission to use it only for the first broadcast and had to change it for future broadcasts and overseas distribution.

Huh, well that is an interesting angle to consider as well. It seems like some changes can happen a bit fast either due to outright complaints (like this Dekapanman one) or as you suggest, other issues that come up where something might not make it past the original broadcast. Besides the Pokemon example, I'm trying to think of other anime that might have had some fast fixes and changes.

I've seen differing reports where either episode 1 will be re-animated or just replaced entirely, and from what the official site's suggesting, it looks like the latter now? It's still making me wonder if any plans for later episodes have to be rethought, or if they'll just have to have any 'risky' parodies redone for the BD.

                  Re: Osomatsu-san

Though oldish news from some days ago and reported on before with the original controversy, episode 3 is confirmed to be altered for the BDs. Unsurprising, considering the controversies and the previous edits made for rebroadcasts:
                  http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...reaming/.95582

So far other than that one and episode 1, there's yet to be any other announcements of controversy but I suppose we'd give it time. It should be noted the "completely different episode" interpretation for the redone episode 1 seems to have meat since there's no longer its title, but just "completely new animation". The title, if any, is probably secret.

Episode 3's noted on the BD page to have changes to some of the included contents, which further seals it. The Dekapanman skits would seem to be completely left out of the running now unless I'm mistaken here (and feel free to clarify), and there's a "new short video" listed at the end of the skits, which I'm guessing would be new animation produced to fill the original spots.

This link comments on the removal:

                      Re: Osomatsu-san

The BD page updated, and there is no episode 1 at all. Instead, episode 2 starts off the discs of the home video version!
                      http://osomatsusan.com/discography/d...php?id=1011022

The "Completely new animation" used to fill the spot where an episode would have been? Two unaired skits, "Virgin Hero" and "Matsu Soup", have been compiled into a special Episode 3.5. There is also a short film called "Shiritori". Meanwhile, the "Dekapanman" skits in episode 3 have been swapped out for a segment titled "Realistic Matsu".

Further confirming Episode 1's fate as a sealed work/banned is that its summary has been removed from the official site as well, while a summary for Episode 3.5 has been added:
                      http://osomatsusan.com/story/story_d...php?id=1000042

It would seem that perhaps due to the censorship issues, some other episodes and skits were shuffled around in order, and ultimately these two were dropped and held back as replacement material for this release.
