Re: Toaru Majutsu no Index Season 1 BD-Box

Index season 1 BD-Box out for June and Railgun season 1 BD-Box going for July it be nice if Geneon would release Index II BD-Box next so at least Funi could negotiate Bluray rights sooner than later for a possible 2014 release.

Re: Toaru Majutsu no Index Movie

I'm going to guess that the LE will possibly come with a soundtrack CD, since they never released or solicited one. It seems to be the standard now, what with the BD box sets and Railgun S.

In theory, Geneon Universal certainly could have included the completed English dub and subtitles in this set, regardless of whatever future plans there may be for a U.S. Blu-ray release from FUNimation. If anything, doing so might have benefited them ever so slightly more, since an extra handful of folks Stateside or elsewhere would then be importing this set, which more significantly adds to their bottom line than the percentages and royalties they would get had that same extra handful of fans waited a year (or whatever) and purchased a Blu-ray set from FUNimation. Though whether those additional sales would be enough to offset the additional production costs (minor though they may be in the grand scheme of things) of including the dub and subtitles would be part of that equation as well.

Wouldn't they usually only include an English dub if they produced it themselves? (e.g, titles the old US division handled) im not sure how it all works but would they have to purchase the rights from Funimation to use the English dub since i assume they dubbed it themselves? If that's right there would be more of a chance of just subs being included than the dub as well, since they wouldn't have to deal with Funimation. Then again, they probably wont include sub or a dub at all.
I just came up with that on the spot, so please tell me if im thinking about it the wrong way haha.

No, it doesn't work that way. The original licensor has ownership of dubs or subtitle tracks produced by a U.S. company; that's why license rescues can show up with the original dub years later (the rights holders simply provide the materials to the new U.S. license holder). There was even a case (Strike Witches 2) where Funimation had completed the dub, but then were required to delay their planned release because of a planned Japanese box set; the Japanese company decided to release their set with Funi's dub, meaning that the dub was actually available in Japan before it was available here.

Geneon Universal is definitely capable of releasing this set with the dub and subtitles; if they don't, it's because they chose not to.

Glorian's got it. It's often the case that all a U.S. licensee may actually own in regards to a given property is a very limited number of secondary production elements, such as the layouts of back covers and disc menus (note: just the layout and formatting, not any of the actual artwork, so basically just a template in a computer program with a lot of blank spaces in it), and the code behind those menus. Even things like new U.S. title logos which you'd think the U.S. licensee might own are produced under the condition that the Japanese licensor retain ownership of them, which is why certain U.S. title logos have shown up in use by other companies for license-rescued titles.

There have, of course, been exceptions, where a U.S. licensee has ended up with ownership of more substantial elements like a dub or subtitles, or a title completely outright (see: MD Geist). But those have been few and far between.

ohhh ok thanks for the info Glorian/Hayate. Wow i would have though they would own the dub if they produced it themselves, hmm interesting. Though im glad that's not the case, because then i guess we wouldn't be seeing dubs and much subtitle releases from Japanese companies.
