Second-year high school student Yatora Yaguchi is bored with his normal life. He studies well and plays around with his friends, but in truth, he does not enjoy either of those activities. Bound by norms, he secretly envies those who do things differently.

That is until he discovers the joy of drawing. When he sees a painting made by a member of the Art Club, Yatora becomes fascinated with the colors used in it. Later, in an art exercise, he tries to convey his language without words but instead through painting. After that experience, Yatora finds himself so invested in art that he decides that it is what he wants to do for a living. But there stand multiple obstacles in his way: his parents who are hesitant over his unique choices, his more experienced peers, and the study of a subject much deeper than he initially expected.

    Episode 1

    Feeling blue about art.

To start things off, Yatora is introduced as he has that delinquent streak to him and is totally bored about his life, but when he picks up the brush and begins drawing, he finds great pleasure in it. So he decides he wants to pursue art for a career, but there are quite a lot of obstacles in his way, the biggest being that his family can't afford to send him to art school, and while there's a public one that's much more affordable, it also has the lowest acceptance rate. And thus, Yatora starts off with a huge dilemma on his hands. Quite a nice way to start things off here as Yatora sure has his work cut out for him seeing that first and foremost, he needs to convince his parents that he's serious about it as a profession rather than just being a hobby.

As usual, the trial period rules are in full effect, and it's good to see Netflix finally doing a simulcast even if it comes two weeks later than in Japan.

      Episode 2

      The art of graduation.

Things moved pretty quickly in this episode as it starts off with a special study session over summer break, and at the end of the episode Yatora is starting his senior year of high school after saying farewell to Mori and Yamamoto. Mori got accepted into MUA, and seeing that it's Tokyo University of Arts or bust for Yatora seeing that his family can't afford the tuition to a private college, he's brushing up his art skills like hell, and to that it's onto cram school. Yuka is also aiming for that school as well as the student who mixes up the school uniforms is going for the same thing. And it wasn't easy for Yatora as well seeing that he had to go all-out and make a sketch of his mother to finally convince her. So now that at the very least his mother is willing to let him pursue a career in art if he gets into TUA, it's full speed ahead to getting into the program with the lowest acceptance rate for art schools, and I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles it.

        Episode 3

        Everybody must start somewhere.

Now that Yatora is going full speed ahead to get into Tokyo University of the Arts, he has quite a tall mountain to climb as he competing against some very talented guys like Yotasuke, who's already painting at a near-professional level, as well as Kuwana who is from a family that produced several artists who are TUA alumni. And of course there's his fellow clubmate Yuka. As for Yatora, he shows that he has great potential, but what he's lacking is imagination as he's merely imitating others. Then again, he's a beginner who hasn't been drawing for very long, and all great artists start out by imitating. Pretty much, this episode goes to show that Yatora has what it takes to be a great artist worthy of being accepted into TUA, but he's got quite a long way to go seeing that he will need to strive for originality.

          Episode 4

There's no such thing as exam art.

Cram school continues, and superstitions are already arising. First of all, there's an art assignment that Kuwana finishes in first place, while Yatora score is better than average. That appears to be all well and good for Kuwana, except that nobody who has ever placed first in the assignment got admitted to TUA. Then there's Yotasuke being paranoid over exam art, but Yatora is given different advice as while exam art used to be a thing, it's not anymore. So it's all about being himself as Yatora has that down to an art, pun intended. Pretty good episode that was going to show that while Yatora has quite a lot on his mind, he will be just find if he does things the way he has always done it.

On that note, the trial period for this show is over, and I think I'm ready to call this show in.

            Episode 5

            Bonds do matter.

It really is crunch time for Yatora as the entrance exam is fast approaching for the Tokyo University of Arts, and he's in a slum. It doesn't help that people around him are also struggling as well as he's struggling to find the right inspiration needed to do a painting based on bonds. So this would be a good time to make a visit to Musashino Arts University to check up on Mori and see what she has produced, and just like that he completes the assignment with something he's proud of. This episode is all about the highs and lows of being a painter as everybody experiences it, and artists are no exception. I'm continuing to really enjoy this show that has done a nice job with the coming-of-age aspect.

              Episode 6

              The pressure is on.

Cram school is off for winter break, but with the exam only two months away that Yatora has been hard at work, first with the assignment of creating something with charcoal, and then finding his comfort zone knowing that being true to himself is the most important part of being an artist. While that's going on Maki is hard at work trying to be as great as her big sister is, and she's working under quite a lot of pressure. So after some more training, the exams are about to begin and next time, Yatora will be taking the first of them. So the time has come for Yatora to but everything he learned to use seeing that his career as an artist depends on him getting into TUA.

                Episode 7

Failure to adapt is adapting to fail.

The exams are on as in the last moments before it all starts, Yatora is told about his one main liability, and that is his failure to adapt. He's thinking way too much about making things go just as scripted, but that's going to get him in trouble depending on the situation. And thus, he learns how to be a bit more adaptable seeing that the exam is going to be quite harsh on those who can't. Yatora needs to learn how to make something his own, and he understand that. So with that, the first exam begins with some pretty big restrictions as there are a number of tools that can't be used in order to keep those who adapt while weeding out those who can't.
