The fantasy centers around Makoto Misumi, an ordinary high school boy summoned to an alternate world as a brave warrior. Unfortunately, the goddess of the world said with disdain, "Your face is ugly," stripped him of his title, and banished him to the outermost fringes of the wilderness.

While wandering the wilderness, Makoto encountered dragons, spiders, orcs, dwarves, and all sorts of other non-human species. Due to differences in the environment from his home world, Makoto now exhibits extraordinary powers in magic and combat. Thus, he survives in this world while dealing with various encounters. The curtain rises on the alternate-world social reform fantasy of a boy forsaken by gods and humans.

    Episode 1

    From hero to zero.

And so, it's yet another isekai where this time, Makoto is taking up archery and he gets transported into this fantasy world where he was summoned as a hero. But because the goddess doesn't like the way he looks that he's thrown into the wild where he has to find a way to survive. At least Tsukuyomi is there to give him the powers he needs to do so, and once Makoto is established, from the look of things he's going to be another OP freakazoid that's all too common in isekais. Nevertheless, the show was unexpectedly funny seeing that Makoto is disappointed he wasn't isekaied by getting run over by a truck, and while he had status, it was stripped just like that. And then there's the dragon who was fierce one moment, and acting like a puppy the next. Solid start so far with this show in a season filled with isekais.

As always, the trial period rules are in full effect.

      Re: Episode 1

"I need a hero....oh, but not an ugly one like you, MC."

So, we have Makoto, ordinary guy, though below average in the looks and height department. But he's likeable enough and is in his school's archery club. And he wakes up, drifting in space, summoned by Tsukuyomi, a god so nice he'll dispose of all of Makoto's, er, manly literature, games and computer files. But kami-sama's on a mission, send Makoto to another world where a capricious goddess has asked for a hero.

It turns out that Makoto's parents were from the world of that goddess, and in exchange for escaping, they had to promise to give the goddess what they loved the most. Meaning if Makoto doesn't go, one of his 2 sisters will have to go instead of him. It turns out that life on Earth is so severe in comparison to the world he's going to, that Makoto's going to be powerful on his new world. It's like that moment in a shonen show where a character suddenly takes off all those weights no one knew he was wearing and causes a 5.2 earthquake when he crops the weights on the ground.

Things are good, until the goddess takes a look at him, and first laughs that his parents had someone like him, and then kicks him out to the ends of the world so she doesn't have to look on his ugly self, though she does give him the ability read and write all the languages of orcs, goblins, monsters, etc., everyone except her precious humans.

Tsukuyomi interrupts his fall, tells him to not worry about anything, that all obligations are released, to just live his life without restraint. But it's a communication that takes a large power drain from the good god* who's going to have to take a nap for a few centuries, meaning don't expect help from him anytime soon.

Makoto discovers the fall was nothing and then wanders for 3 days, before hearing a girl calling for help. To the rescue! And Makoto finds out that they weren't kidding when they said he was going to be powerful, as he totally one-shots the 2-headed dog, terrifying the damsel in distress...a cute, blonde female orc, complete with a face like Miss Piggy. Except actually cute. But still a pig face. She left her village to be a sacrifice to the Shen, a powerful monster. They stop at a small orc outpost for her to refresh, at which point she teaches Makoto magic, which he easily learns.

Makoto takes off the next date to take on the Shen, and discovers some shortcuts to the magic, and shapes it into a bow and arrow, blowing up a torii, the Japanese ceremonial gate. Which destroys the monsters who had been using the Shen's reputation to con the orcs into giving the sacrifices, but as he dies, the leader warns that Makoto's awoken the Shen, who turns out to be a dragon, ala DBZ. A dragon which is astonished at Makoto's power and vastly interested in Makoto's memories from another world. An attempt by the Shen to trap Makoto in a dream of illusions of his own desire fails, as he remembers the confession scene that happened, as he made the confessing girl, Hasegawa, cry.

He breaks out of the dragon's trap, only to find that the Shen is willing and eager to make peace, and wants to contract with him. He agrees after some negotiations (leaving him wondering exactly what memories of his the dragon accessed. We see that the dragon isn't trying to trick Makoto, as the contract starts as one of equals, 50-50. But it's not able to be made until the dragon shifts it to 80-20, in Makoto's favor...at which point Makoto's new companion appears, a tall busty woman who identifies as a samurai.

This was a LOT of fun, and exceeded my expectations. I've been following the manga and liking it, but this was just a homerun for me. It was funny, a nice twist on isekai heroics and OP characters.

Yes, Makoto is OP, but the problem with OP characters is that few know how to handle them properly, and to this point, the manga has done this well, and I now have every reason that the same will hold true for this anime.

I'm hooked and this is going to be must-watch anime for this season for me.

        Episode 2

        So I'm a spider's master, so what?

And Makoto is quickly gaining allies as after the dragon became his servant, now he has a bunch of orcs and dwarves he's now friends with as he continues to show that bitchy goddess that it was a mistake to kick him to the curb. And then a giant spider demon attacks, and while this bug is tougher to exterminate than Kumoko is, Makoto finds a way just when it looked like he was going to be its next meal. And just like with the dragon lady, the spider also takes a human form and decides she wants to serve Makoto. Lots of crazy stuff going on here as the situation takes a 180 just like with the battle against the dragon.

          Too unhuman.

While Makoto has made allies with the monsters, humans not so much. That's because he gives off some aura that makes him appear to be a monster to others. So he sneaks into town with the newly-named Tomoe and Mio helping him get into town where they become adventurers. And then they notice that this town's people have been suffering as everything costs too much and somebody is up to no good with their predatory market tactics. While Makoto has been down on his luck, this is his chance to change his impression seeing that this town needs help in the worst way.

            Re: Episode 3

            Ugly is as ugly does.

This show continues to hit all the right spots, keeping a very active sense of humor about itself but also causing Makoto to run into a problem in the HR Dept. It turns out that, sure, by this world's standards he's super ugly, but the real issue is that his mana is spilling out of him to the point that he's terrifying to the humans who see him. It's as if he's a gang of demon lords. Plus the goddess who cast him out prevented him from speaking the human language. He's able to read it after a while and understand it, but he's still can't quite get the speaking part down. He comes up with a way to project his speech into visual thought bubbles, and is thus able to communicate. After many trials and errors, the dwarves come up with a magical device that will absorb and hide his mana.

Did I say dwarves? Before Makoto ventures into town, a few things happen. He's asked to name the dragon and spider girls, by them, and they respectively become, to their happiness, Tomoe and Mio. And they introduce the new residents of the pocket dimension: Tomoe's followers, the Mist Lizards, Mio's followers, the Alke, and the dwarves who agreed to come after Makoto saved them from Mio's rampage, all joining with the Orcs.

Makoto's first attempt to go to town is a disaster, and after the mana suppression and a mask to hide his identity, Tomoe and Mio accompany him with a wagon of apples to sell. They end up registering at the Adventurer's Guild, with Tomoe, who beat off Mio in the past, getting a level of 1320, and Mio, 1500. Makoto, despite beating them both, has a level of only 1.

But they've drawn attention to themselves, with Tomoe guarding the goods while Makoto and Mio go out for dinner. The bad guys are making their move and also a young beggar girl.

This continues to impress with its sense of fun and interesting setup.

              Episode 4

              Sister, come back.

That girl is Rinin, and her big sister Toa was captured by a mafia led by Mils as they are the guys who are responsible for the sky-high prices of goods inside the town. Rinon was trying to flee the town, but got captured by one of the guys working for Mils and now she's just slaving away. But everything changed when Makoto arrived, and while he can't talk like a human, he can text it out like what Celty does. Of course given their tremendous power that Mils never stood a chance, and trying to not kill those thugs was tougher than defeating them seeing that those grunts were just pathetically weak, at least compared to Tomoe and Mio. And that jail cell, no wall will stop them from breaking Toa out. And then those two just overdo it, wrecking the entire town when all they needed to do was rescue Toa. Quite hilarious how everything went down, and even if the entire town was bulldozed, at least they made two girls happy again.

So with that, the trial period for this show has ended, and while the show doesn't exactly have the best of production values, the story writing and creative use of comedy has been pretty good so far, so I'm leaning towards keeping it.

                Episode 5

                Tricked in the trade.

Rinon and Toa have been rescued, though destroying Zetsuya in the process was totally unnecessary. It's onto Tsige to drop the sisters off, as well as to register as adventurers since the town was destroyed before the registration became official. Along the way, some rare materials are harvested from some hornet monsters, which is great timing seeing that there's an S-ranked mission that involves getting the client those said materials. It's a great thing that Makoto can use portal magic to get to the monster domain quickly. Just when it looked like the mission was going to be a breeze, there's a reason why it's S-ranked as apparently the client is pretty infamous, and the first warning sign was given at the end when Rembrandt said that he did things all wrong. It will be interesting to see what that is all about, but nevertheless it's quite an ominous sign.

                  Episode 6

So easy that even a high schooler can do it.

As it turns out, Rembrandt is using those rare items to reverse a curse that was cast on his wife and daughters, and realizing just how difficult it is to acquire them that he was skeptical at first, but in the end it's mission accomplished. Just one problem as Makoto will need to pass two tests in order to become a certified adventurer or else he can't claim his reward. Those tests are supposed to be difficult, but for an Earthling high school exams are much tougher than it. And the part where Makoto needs to procure the materials, he already had them. And when it comes to food, the demiplane's food blows anything served in Tsige out of the water. Once again, it's amusing to see just how Makoto is on an entirely different level as he makes everything look easy.

                    Episode 7

                    Back to human.

Now that Makoto has the ingredients and an alchemist to turn it into a cure, all that's left is to give it to Rembrandt's wife and children that became zombies. It's a good thing that Rembrandt has one hell of a butler in Morris as one of the doses nearly hit the ground. So with the job done, Makoto confronts the one who put that curse on them in Lime, and he was talked into inflicting the curse seeing that Rembrandt hasn't exactly been easy to deal with and he has burned quite a lot of bridges with his dealings. But seeing that Lime felt bad about it and was apologetic that he is left off quitting his job as an adventurer and being given a brand new sword so that he can help out the orphanage he grew up in. Pretty nice way to wrap things up here as Lime got quite an extravagant parting gift with a sword that anybody not from the Demiplane would kill to get their hands on.

                      Episode 8

Got a lot of training to do.

Pretty much, this episode is all about training, first with the orcs and lizardmen after that exhibition match in the demiplane that the orc combatant won showed just how sloppy they were. And then there's a party formed by Toa and Lime as thanks to Tomoe and Mio going crazy and taking out the town's top adventurers that the guild needs replacements, and they submit that party through some pretty harsh training. One that includes their big test to go on an extremely difficult mission that's asking the impossible for humans, but is child's play for Makoto. But thanks to all their training, those four manage to clear that quest with flying colors and plenty of spoils. And then Makoto decides to open up a business by renting out a space from Rembrandt. A chill episode this is that's all about training seeing that with these guys cracking the whip that the trainees can become stronger than what a typical human is capable of doing.

More crazy things just keep on happening around Makoto, and the latest is that when shooting with the bow, what he's actually doing is experiencing death and rebirth every time he fires, which is only possible for someone with great mana that he possesses that's equivalent to a goddess. And then he gets an earful from Tomoe and Mio after running into somebody from the town's red light district. Then there are the ogre sisters Aqua and Eris who are out to take down Makoto for tainting the forest they live in with their presence. Once again, Makoto doesn't realize what he's getting himself into anymore with everything going on.

No bones about this pretty boy.

So after Mio nullifies the magic the ogre sisters were casting, Makoto becomes the talk of the ogre village that Aqua and Eris live in, and they hold a banquet for him. Little did he know that this banquet was set up to have him executed, but those plans went out the window when a lich appears and attacks with some potent status-changing magic, which doesn't work on Makoto. So after being thoroughly beaten, the lich becomes one of Makoto's trusted servants and he takes on the form of a bishonen. Just when things were looking up, Tomoe collapses there ant the end. All of the sudden, things got really serious there at the end.

So it turns out that only a fragment and not Tomoe herself. So Makoto springs into action and kills that adventurer who killed that fragment as well as an orc, the first time he has had to kill another person. After holding a funeral and turning his attention towards getting his business off the ground, things seem to be going well. That is, until the goddess who cursed Makoto strikes again and sends him to a war zone where he loses two of his fingers. Things were going so well there, but let's not forget that this was all because of Makoto's resolve and his god-given powers after the goddess forsake him. One more episode left to go as Makoto is in quite a tough spot.

                              Stone Cold Killer.

It all circles back. Racing toward the explosion, we learn why the conscious diffusion is such a big deal, as on arrival, Makoto witnesses the diffusion of the consciousness of those involved in the explosion, and latching onto that of the escaping adventurer, we see what happened. First, the bitch who caused all this was trying to trick him from the first, in order to use him. Then, in the process of looting the disposal storage, the fragment and the orc try to stop them, because of the danger, which results in one of Makoto's rings exploding. The fragment puts up a barrier...the result is that the combo of the barrier and explosion opens a mist gate for the adventurer to escape through, but her 2 companions, the orc and the fragment are killed.

Makoto freaks out, though he and the Lich, who gains the name Shiki later, manage to heal the male Alke and orc girl. And then a Stone Cold Killer arrives back following the bitch adventurer. It's Makoto, who first slices her hands off midway between the wrist and elbow, and then stabs her through the throat.. It's an emotionally trying point for him, as his emotions return, and he's not sure what he's upset about: That he killed someone for the first time, or just about those who died.

Precautions are taken to make sure nothing like this ever happens again, from greater care taken with the disposal of dangerous magics, to the protection of the demiplane population from evil adventurers.

So, it's off to a neutral city via teleport so that makoto can enroll as a student to learn more about this world, when ...GOTCHA!

The goddess snatches him away to a different point, where he immediately is attacked, losing 2 fingers in the process.

I already want a 2nd season, so looking forward to next week.
My Avatar: The lovely Mikuru Asahina from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Why do I stick with her in a world of constantly changing avatars? Because:
                              1) Her friendly, playful attitude in that picture, (despite being forced unwillingly into cosplay), reflects my own friendly, playful personality;
                              2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and
                              3) It makes it easiier for me to find my own posts in threads.
