An isekai about a guy who grew up in the slums dying and his soul being transferred into somebody from another world where he's also poor, but is given a chance to turn his life around after saving the princess and gaining a scholarship to attend a school for the filthy rich.

Amakawa Haruto is a young man who died before reuniting with his childhood friend who disappeared five years ago. Rio is a boy living in the slums who wants revenge for his mother who was murdered in front of him when he was five years old.

Earth and another world. Two people with completely different backgrounds and values. For some reason, the memories and personality of Haruto who should've died is resurrected in Rio's body. As the two are confused over their memories and personalities fusing together, Rio decides to live in this new world.

Along with Haruto's memories, Rio awakens an unknown "special power," and it seems that if he uses it well, he can live a better life. But before that, Rio encounters a kidnapping that turns out to be of a princess of the Bertram Kingdom that he lives in.

After saving the princess, Rio is given a scholarship at the Royal Academy, a school for the rich and powerful. Being a poor orphan in a school of nobles turns out to be an extremely detestable place to be.

    Episode 1

Not a bum in the slum.

And so, it starts off with Haruto dying in a brutal accident when apparently the brakes gave way in the bus and swerved into the train tracks where it gets smashed by an oncoming train. Haruto is then isekaied where he becomes Rio, an orphan living in the slums whose mother was just murdered. He is visited by some nobles from the palace getting some money for information. But then he encounters the one who kidnapped the Princess Flora and threw her into a bag. It's a good thing Haruto is a skilled martial artist as he took down that kidnapper. But then he gets dragged into the palace where he's questioned and tortured until Flora wakes up to tell the truth, and all of the sudden he's now in the presence of the king. Pretty generic setup for an isekai show there, but the characters are at least an interesting bunch, all while this rags to riches story certainly has some intrigue to it.

As always, the trial period rules are in effect as I continue to evaluate shows that I want to watch for this season.

      Episode 2

      Nothing but hard work.

This episode pretty much is all about Rio rising to the top of the class using the experiences he learned from his time as Haruto to rise to the top. While that earned the praise of his teacher and mentor Celia, who is a professor at the academy at the age of 12 (and now 17), it earned the ire of the class, especially with a couple of snobby noble sons seeing that they don't want anybody surpassing Christina. Of course, Christina doesn't hold that same attitude. And then comes the tournament where Rio faces off against Charles, that douchebag who tortured Rio after being brought into the castle, and he earned his demotion by being everything a knight shouldn't be. And while Rio could have been a knight, he's committed to being a journeyman as there's one burning question he wants to know and being a knight won't let him do that. While this show has been tropey so far, it does a good enough job in making the characters interesting to follow and the setting and story has plenty of intrigue to it. Even so, this episode was not as good as the first one does at storytelling.

        Episode 3

        Wanted, dead or alive.

Rio was well on his way to graduating as the class valedictorian, but instead he drops out right before graduation as he's being framed for a crime he didn't commit. Once again, he saves Flora as while on an assignment, she falls over the cliff and Rio's magic helps save her while Rio takes the fall himself and lands safely below. But then a high-level monster gets summoned and overwhelms the class, although for Rio it's child's play. And while Rio has left the academy, he's keeping in contact with Celia under the name of his former life Haruto. The plot is really thickening as it looked like Rio was well on his way to completing his rags to riches story. But instead, he's the object of jealousy and now he's on a quest to uncover the truths and to do that he needs to go to Yagumo, where he's from. Rio got the raw deal here, but at least he has some supporters who understand the truth. However, public opinion is another thing entirely and that's the only thing that matters, unfortunately. Next time, the first assassin is sent after him in the way of the fox girl Latifa.

          Episode 4

There's a she wolf not in disguise.

Here comes Latifa as this wolf girl was ordered to kill Rio. While her trap would have killed most, not someone as skilled and alert as Rio is. Instead, Rio gets that collar off that forces her to obey her master's every command. As it turns out, she is one of the girls who was on that bus that Haruto was on when it crashed. Now free from her master, she decides to become a surrogate onii-san to Rio. Those two are hitting it off quite nicely there much like with Naofumi and Raphtalia.

So with that, the trial period is over, and I have decided that it makes the cut for this season.

            Episode 5

A new place to call home.

So that was Uzuma and her gang of demi-humans who mistakenly believed that Rio kidnapped Latifa, and that misunderstanding was quickly cleared up. After seeing just how much potential he has with a human-shaped spirit, he becomes the talk of the town. Great to see that Rio is getting along with everybody, and they have quite a nice place to call home with a sacred tall tree in the backdrop. While that's going on, Reiss is up to no good as he steals an egg and feeds his partner a lie that nothing bad will happen because Strahl is so far away, but those beasts can fly pretty far, and as far as they need to in order to take back one of their own. While the show continues to do a lot of cliched stuff, the show makes up for it with great characters and an intriguing plot.

              Episode 6

              The sky's not the limit.

So the previous episode ended with a scene from one year later with Reiss stealing a black wyvern egg. While Rio got some well-needed rest and relaxation for a year, this is a journey after all, and it won't end until he gets to the truth. And now is as good a time as ever to leave after a wyvern nearly destroys the village that was the result of Reiss stealing an egg and that poor guy who was used as a tool ended up flying towards it and dropping the egg when Reiss kills him to kill the baby and anger its parent. But it's Rio to save the day, and while wyverns are tough, not so tough on the inside as Rio shoved a ball of wind magic down that dragon's throat to defeat it. And as a reward, he has a lot of new equipment that includes a black coat, which every overpowered swordsman needs, a powerful sword, and a gauntlet that can be used to store everything he'll need. Pretty nice way to get rewarded after all that as it goes to show that it's always a great thing to make allies.

                Episode 7

                Homeward bound.

Rio's next stop is the village his parents grew up in where he meets his grandmother Yuba and his cousin Ruri, who is the only living member of his family remaining. Nothing like coming home to family, even though the place doesn't have much to offer. Nevertheless, it's nice to be back, though it's not exactly the most relaxing stay once Gon comes in and tries to kidnap Ruri and Saya. But it was just a bad idea to go up against Rio as no simple-minded scumbag stands a chance against him. Rio nearly killed him, but Yuba arrived just in time to stop it. That was good to see Gon getting what he deserves, a battered face and a trip to the slammer as patrollers were on the scene to take this pathetic guy away. Looks like something big will be revealed as Rio continues to show that he's helpful and powerful, taking those to help out the village his parents once lived.

                  Re: Episode 7

PTSD? What could possibly go wrong if that gets triggered.

So, been enjoying this series quite a bit. I get the impression that things are being rushed, but it's still pretty good. So, Rio is now back to his original homeland, and ends up finding out info by asking 2 girls, Ruri and Saya, in the fields to take him to the village elder. Ruri takes him to her grandmother who is the head of the village, from whom he finds out that Ruri is his cousin and the village elder is his grandmother, though they keep knowledge or their relationship a secret for now, even from Ruri.

Rio establishes himself as useful, helpful and skilled member of the community, so much so that granny wants him to help guard the transport to market to sell the extra grain they'll have after paying taxes and putting away their winter supplies, Also doing the same is Gon, the son of the headman of a neighboring village, and his two goons. Their wagon broke down and Gon has the hots for Ruri. So he rigged the breakdown of his wagon and plans to go raping with Ruri and Saya. But he didn't count on Rio having given the girls a charm that acts like an alarm for their room, alerting Rio, who comes onto the scene, a scene that looks very like the time when his mother was murdered. PTSD time, and Rio completely goes nuts, in the scary, emotionless way, ending up just pounding Gon's face into a mash. He's stopped by the girls and the amiable young tax collector who arrived earlier in the episode. The result is that Gon and his punks, along with Rio, are headed for the capital next episode, with more revelations of Rio's mystery to come.

This is a nice take on the isekai genre, as we see that Rio lived mush of his early life before regaining memories of his past life, and as this episode shows, he's got a bit of a split personality between Rio and Haruto, but now realizes that they've merged in some strange way. There are plenty of isekai reincarnations where the current world is still much like a game to the MC. Not here; Rio is still very much of this world, with strong attachments to his late mother, but also having many of Haruto's desires, dreams and disappointments as well. I look forward to next week!

                    Episode 8

                    Rooted in royalty.

And so comes the big reveal in that Rio is a member of the Karasuki royalty in the Yagumo region having been born to the princess Ayame and a volunteer soldier in Zen. The Karasuki kingdom was at war, and while they were able to bring it to an end, it came with a condition that Zen was to be executed and Ayame would become part of a political marriage. So the two ran away and settled into the outskirts of Beltrum where they would spend the rest of their lives as adventurers before being murdered by Lucius. While Rio was quite young at the time, he is well aware about Lucius and is determined to get payback. Pretty much, this is an info dumping episode that spills the beans about Rio's origin, as well as setting things up for Rio to take action.

                      Re: Episode 8

It's good to be the king. Except when you secretly have to have your daughter and her favorite bodyguard run away to avoid her forced political marriage and the bodyguard's execution.

The coincidences pile up here. Grandmother Yuba gives Tax Collector Hayate a private later for his father. While in the capital, Rio rescues a young girl from a kidnapping. Hayate delivers his letter to his Dad, who immediately heads with his wife to meet Rio. They were both attendants of his mother, Princess Ayame, and knew Zen, his father. Zen was a volunteer soldier in a war Karasuki was involved in, doing so well as to receive the title of "warrior-noble" (which seems to be possibly the same as samurai rank, knighthood, or minor nobility. Zen is so good that Hayate's dad requested that Zen be assigned as a bodyguard to the royal family, and the person he became the bodyguard for was Ayame-hime. The war came to an end, but the prince from the neighboring country was so taken by Ayame, he ordered his retainer to abduct her so he could have rapey time with her. Zen stopped this, kicking the bad guy out of window with a loooong drop. Bad prince demands Ayame in marriage and Zen's execution. Ayame has eyes only for Zen, of course, and with the secret approval and help from the king, the pair runaway. Hayate's parents take Rio the next day to meet his grandparents.

It's a heartfelt reunion, with Rio telling his grandparents, and the audience info about his parents for the first time: How his father died before he knew him, and that one day, a man named Lucius, who had been an adventurer with his later father, someone he and his mother knew, came by, drugged Rio and then murdered his mother in front of him. For reasons unknown, Rio was spared, waking up in the slums, where he lived for the next 2 years. The grandparents understand much, realizing how tough it was at the noble academy (he doesn't tell him of the framing of him), but also suggest that Lucius might have also killed Zen. We get confirmation that Rio is out to get Lucius.

We also see that Rio has become totally badass, as he's able to defeat Gouki, Hayate's father, and the best warrior of several kingdoms around Karasuki. We learn that the girl he rescued was Gouki's daughter, and he gets a nice date with Sayo (who is just cute as can be). We end with him about visiting the graves of his parents.

This show continues to entertain. We, of course, get the irony that he was actually a prince when he was bullied by the nobles at school, but his return is handled well, as it basically is all secret, it's not like he's now a public prince. Sure, it goes to the OP nature of his character, but here he basically just gains grandparents in the king and queen, in addition to granny Yuba and cousin Ryo. The existence of other royal family relatives isn't explored at this point.

But his parents escape sets this up nicely, as his existence might cause a war. So, it's a nice bit of flavor, with plot potential. I look forward to this show each week.

                        Episode 9

Making the village a better place.

Now that Rio knows about his origins, he stays in the village for a year where he helps the villagers with work and helps make the village more productive with their harvest. And then Sayo confesses her love for Rio, but realizing that Rio is on a journey and that he is a wanted man that of course it would be in her best interest to keep that love unrequited. So after the fall harvest, he sets off and returns to the forest of the spirits where he spends some time with the beastmen again. And all of the sudden, some girl shows up in his bed in the nude leading to some typical harem hijinks. That was a chill episode for the most part as it's all about making life better, and then interacting with all the friends he has made. Looks like things are getting serious next time, but in the meantime, there's something about that girl there at the end and she has a lot of explaining she needs to do.

                          Episode 10

                          Now that's the spirit.

So that girl in his bed is his manifested spirit that he names Aishia, and seeing that Rio is a force to be reckoned with that so too is Aishia as shown in that sparring match that could have destroyed the forest had it gone on. Now that Rio has some more equipment and a new spirit on his side, as well as knowledge about his roots, it's back to the capital to see Celia again after being away for so long. Except that Celia isn't at the academy anymore as she's now being forced to marry Charles in a political marriage. I had a feeling this was coming after seeing the ending animation of Celia chained while wearing a wedding dress. So to end this show, Haruto will have his hands full to rescue his teacher from an arranged marriage with that jerk, and seeing that his parents surrendered their nobility to avoid a political marriage that Rio ought to be extra motivated.

So, the one anime I've been able to keep up with while evacuated during Hurricane Ida continues on its merry way, with it appearing that Rio/Haruto is returning in the nick of time...and I don't mean in the nick of time to be first in line for the buffet at the reception.

So, we get the OP manifested Spirit, and he finally fesses up to Latifa that he's also reincarnated. About damn time!

I continue to enjoy this show and look forward to the ass-kicking to come.

                            1) Her friendly, playful attitude in that picture, (despite being forced unwillingly into cosplay), reflects my own friendly, playful personality;
                            2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and
                            3) It makes it easiier for me to find my own posts in threads.

                              Episode 11

                              Caught in a bad romance.

And after poking around and learning that he arrived just in the nick of time to put a stop to this political marriage, Rio finally reunites with Celia, though it had to be quick. He didn't get the answer out of her about whether or not she truly wants to go through with it, but seeing that Charles already has so many wives there is no question that this is anything but a match made in heaven. While Rio didn't get that response out of her, Christina does. One more episode left to go as Rio crashes the wedding and tells that no-good noble to get his filthy hands off of her once and for all.
