    O, Hero!

When Kazuya Souma is unexpectedly transported to another world, he knows the people expect a hero. But Souma's idea of heroism is more practical than most—he wants to rebuild the flagging economy of the new land he's found himself in! Betrothed to the princess and abruptly planted on the throne, this realist hero must gather talented people to help him get the country back on its feet—not through war, or adventure, but with administrative reform!

    Episode 1

    Let's be real here.

It's another isekai, this time involving a guy who is taking his negotiating skills over to a struggling kingdom in order to rebuild it. And little did he know that he would essentially be handed the throne as the king got him engaged to Liscia. While this place has been through a lot of wars and conflicts, Kazuya is doing things through diplomacy and reforms as getting on the battlefield just isn't his style. Pretty interesting start here as I'm totally interested in the characters, especially Juda who made a brief appearance in this episode. At the same time, I have to be wary that isekai shows tend to cut corners, even those with strong source materials like this.

    As usual, trial period rules.

      Really?

I'm interested in this, as I've started in on the source material, and I can already see some corners being cut, and the animation is unimpressive to say the least.

Still, the idea is an intriguing one. Can a "hero" save a kingdom via management skills (and a knowledge set that includes Machiavelli)?

      We'll find out.

        Episode 2

It's the law of supply and demand.

Souma gets to work, and he can inject his consciousness into objects like that pen. Pretty much, he's using everything he learned about economics on Earth and is bringing them to the kingdom seeing that these guys are being taken advantage of with the way they run the kingdom. Thus, commercial crops becomes a thing. That speech there really goes to show just how well thought-out things are. This is feeling just like Spice and Wolf as Souma is definitely doing what Craft Lawrence is known for. So now that he has a plan, now he must put it into motion.

They're all in this together. Maybe.

Now that Souma has established himself as the new ruler of the kingdom, he's now putting his realist plan into motion and is meeting with the representatives from the kingdoms he's building trade relationships with. Among them is Juna, a cute songstress, and her singing the Slayers Next opening was really something. And then there's Hakuya, who is quite skeptical about this pact and sees this as being hegemony more than anything. It will be interesting to see where all this goes, but nevertheless the supporting cast gets a great chance to show what they can do.

            Episode 4

            Here's some food for thought.

Souma has something big cooked up, and by that it's all about food, as well as a plan to take back some of the land conquered by the Demon Lords. While Souma promises to bring the kingdom's food supply back to a sustainable level, it's going to take time. In the meantime, Souma is showing that a lot of things around the kingdom are actually edible and the citizens don't realize it. There's the octopus that Souma deep fries, tree roots to turn into chips, and marinated locusts that's part of a wolf girl's diet. Souma sure did come through bringing the recipes he learned from Japan into this world.

And thus, the end of the trial period, and looks like this will be a keeper seeing that the characters are nice, and the story has done a nice job in being different than a conventional isekai show.

              Episode 5

              Turn slimes into noodles.

So that dish there was kind of spoiled there with the beginning, but in this world slimes are a great source of food seeing that they are frail and they make great noodles. Now that the kingdom has enough food to get by knowing that they have a lot of delicious meals laying around that Souma is off to a military academy with Liscia and Aisha. Along the way they meet up with Juna at a restaurant that just added gelin udon to the menu. And Souma was taken for a fool when he told the two girls to call him by his first name not realizing that in this world the given name comes first as opposed to Japan. It's nice to see Souma being helpful without using nothing more than his knowledge and stuff he learned when he was living in Japan.

                For the love of politics...

Here comes the fox girl Kaede and her childhood friend Halbert as she's concerned that Halbert was going to side with the Duke Carmine that would put them on opposite sides of the war. But it's a good thing that Souma knows exactly what to say to talk Halbert out of siding with Carmine and joining Souma's cause instead. So now that those two are on Souma's side, they are now part of the forbidden army where those two are going to utilize their skills the right way. Very nice to see Souma work his magic once again as it would have just been tragic had Halbert and Kaede been enemies.

It's all about location, location, location.

For a change of pace, it's now off to do some dungeon conquering, though with that salamander monster being too much for this party that they wisely retreated with whatever resources they managed to procure. And then it's off to the coast where Souma hope to build a port city as that area is ripe for economic growth. But there's just one problem in that the area's residents are opposed to the project and worried about angering the sea goods and the tsunamis the would happen. Nevertheless, Souma is quite dedicated to doing what is needed to jumpstart the kingdom, and a port city is definitely a nice way to make it happen, provided that he can make the locals happy. In any case, a nice change of pace that was as things were starting to get stale for a moment.

                    Re: Episode 7

                    March 11, 2011.

If you know, about it, you can feel that anniversary from earlier this year permeating this episode. Souma finally gets the budget he wants for a centralized port and transportation hub, but the locals talk about that homes built in the planned area will be destroyed by an angry monster sent by the sea gods.

Souma does an investigation and realizes that they're talking about a tsunami striking where he plans to build the city. He KNOWS what that means, moves the planned site to one where there are no such taboos/dangers, and further orders his earth mages to spend the time to raise the elevation of the city.

This is all about the great earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of which was earlier this year. The tsunami killed tens of thousands, caused the Fukushima meltdowns, literally wiping towns and small cities off the map. Seriously, if you've not seen them, check out the videos of the tsunami that are available online. They are both horrific and humbling videos of the power of nature.

The measures mentioned for further safety, moving residential zones back along with other important buildings, putting parks near the waterfront are real things that has happened, as is elevating the level of many of the towns, in addition to new, higher flood walls. But this episode is all about the 2011 tsunami, especially when they talk about a once a 1000 years tsunami happening at anytime.

It's been nice catching up with this after vacay and COVID from vacay. This remains intriguing and a lot of fun, as we buildup to an internal conflict that seems fated to happen.

                      Episode 8

                      Losing in a landslide.

And now, Souma faces a crisis situation as due to heavy rains, a landslaide ends up destroying much of the dark elf village Aisha came from. Souma did the best he could with mobilizing the army to provide aid, but in the end a lot of people died. Things would have been much worse if it weren't for his aid and expertise, but nevertheless this goes to show that there will be bad things that happen that are beyond his control. Pretty much, this episode serves as a reality check and it gets Souma to realize that not everything will go his way.

                        Episode 9

                        Let's solve this peacefully.

Souma may have done a lot of great things, but not everybody is happy. That would be the case when Castor and Georg voice their displeasure and their intent to overthrow Souma over the removal of their men for the sake of efficiency. As it turns out, Excel is Juna's grandmother, so it's no wonder why they were able to talk things out before Castor or Georg took any action, and while he made no attempt to convince them to back off, he did agree to a duel that will decide the future of the kingdom without a drawn-out war or with ordinary civilians involved. And just like with the typical princess in action trope, Liscia cuts her hair to show her resolve. Should be interesting to see what comes of this duel seeing that there's a lot at stake with this.

                          Episode 10

He's got this one in the tank.

The civil war that Souma managed to have reduced in size begins between Souma's Forbidden Army, Georg's foot soldiers, and Castor's air force begins, all while Amidonia begins their invasion of Elfreiden hoping to take advantage of the chaos to conquer the kingdom. So with two wars going on, Souma has the situation under control with a strategical surrender to stall Gaius while Souma settles things with Castor and Georg. Georg's army went down rather easily after bringing out the elves, and it turns out that Georg was using this war for a different reason. And then Souma turns the battleship Gaius into a land tank to catch Castor off guard to draw the air force to make Castor a sitting duck. Very brilliant strategy there by Souma.

                            Three armies under one leader.

So it turns out that the true purpose of Georg engaging in war is to root out corruption within his gang, and that he did after seeing Souma making quick work of Castor's army once the Albert was unleashed as a tank. So with Castor defeated, he and Carla become servants, all while Georg surrenders without putting up a fight to bring this civil war to a quick end, and with that everybody turns their attention to Gaius as he leads the Amidonia army to invade Elfreiden. So this series will end with the war against Amidonia, though whether or not Souma can work his magic again to win this war with minimal bloodshed remains to be seen.

                              Make music, not war.

And the war is on, and Carla shows what she is made off there on the battlefield. While Gaius was formidable, he didn't stand a chance against an army that Souma organized so masterfully. While Gaius didn't go down with the initial blow, a bunch of arrows finished him off. And then to heal the wound of war, Souma puts on an entertainment show with three singers. First it's Carmille with a childish song, then Juna with a song fit for a beautiful songstress, and then one of the Amidonian generals singing the Amidonia anthem going to show that everybody is welcome to do whatever they want in Elfreiden except fight. This felt disjointed, but it goes to show that Souma is all about putting an end to pointless wars. One more episode left to go.
