A century has passed since magic—true magic, the stuff of legends—has returned to the world. It is spring, the season of new beginnings, and a new class of students is about to begin their studies at the First National Magic University Affiliated High School, nickname: First High.

A manga spin-off of the immensely popular light novel series Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School), Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei (The Honor Student at Magic High School) follows the events of the original series as seen through the eyes of Miyuki Shiba, Tatsuya's sister. The life of an honor student comes with a lot of expectations...and unexpected hidden feelings?!

    Episode 1

    Cool under pressure.

And thus, this side-story begins with Miyuki's birthday happening just before the start of the main series, and her dear brother is giving her a birthday to remember. Of course, while it was one to remember, it didn't exactly happen the way Tatsuya had envisioned as there was a terrorist attacking the shopping center that required Tatsuya to jump into action. Of course, that douchebag crossed the line when he burned Miyuki's present and it's a bad idea to piss her off. So Miyuki does her thing and overwhelm this hothead with her ice magic. Good to see that it starts off with something that wasn't in the original series as the next episode is where it begins, and it will be interesting to see how things look from Miyuki's perspective. In particular, I'm curious to know why she has such a creepy relationship with Tatsuya, something that proved to be practical in the second season.

      Re: Episode 1

      Begin again.

So, yeah, nice to see the new material, but we're also seeing things from behind the scenes, such as the end with Aunt Maya's perspective, and that Mayuki, the head of the student council and her close friend and discipline committee head, Mari, knew more about Miyuki and Tatsuya than we realized, though not the the siblings big secret.

It looks like the focus is going to be heavy on the girls in this show. So far, it's off to a decent start, though, of course, the perfection of Tatsuya and Miyuki as characters, or rather, their overperfections, can always be stumbling block.

Still this looks nice and could be fun. It could also be repetitious, since we're clearly going to be covering the same territory as Irregular did, but we also have some new characters, including rival girls from 3rd high school, just as there were 3rd school rivals for Tatsuya.

I'm optimistic at this point, but the proof will be in the pudding.

      1) Her friendly, playful attitude in that picture, (despite being forced unwillingly into cosplay), reflects my own friendly, playful personality;
      2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and
      3) It makes it easiier for me to find my own posts in threads.

        Episode 2

Who says they can't sit together?

School is now in session, and just like in the beginning of the main series, Tatsuya gets picked on by some Blooms who have that air of superiority and deals with them himself until the student council president intervenes. Honoka was about to get herself into trouble until her spell was cancelled and Tatsuya defended her as he knew what spell she was about to cast, which was not an attack spell. It's great to see that this season focuses more on the girls as I remember how cute Honoka is when she gets embarrassed just like that scene with Pixy from the second season. Irregular is so story-focused that it didn't leave much room for light-hearted stuff like this, and it's a great thing this season lightens the mood here seeing that a story-heavy approach will really test one's patience. But with this version, it's easier to connect with the characters and everything that's going on, so I like that this doing plenty of things to forge its own identity.

          Episode 3

          They're on the case.

And now, it's at the part of the Enrollment arc where Tatsuya is going out and doing his job as an enforcer for the disciplinary committee, all while as typical for the start of the school year, clubs are going all out in order to recruit freshmen. Then comes Eimi as she is into equestrian and makes friends with Honoka and Suzuka. And then those three form the detective club. Pretty cute to see those three getting all enthusiastic about their detective stuff. While that's happening, the chaos that started with Kirihara and Mibu having an uneasy relationship, all while the Blanche bastards wreaked havoc. This show just continues to be enjoyable and much easier to get into, though it comes at a cost as the deemphasis on storytelling leads to issues.

            White-washing the system.

And now, here is the Blanche incident to end the Enrollment arc as the guys who are showing their displeasure for the current system that discriminates against Weeds launch a terrorist attack on the academy. The three detectives try and tail one of the students with connections to Blanche, but they end up getting surrounded by the terrorists. It's a good thing Miyuki was nearby to save the day. This show just keeps on doing what it can to feel different from the main series, and so far it's doing just that.

              Episode 5

Nothing's going to get in her way.

This episode pretty much fast forwards through all the stuff that happened at the end of the Enrollment Arc in Irregular, with pretty much the only new thing up until the encounter with the Blanche leader Tsukasa being the involvement of the Detective Club, and those three girls sure can put up a fight. Of course, Miyuki's icy fury takes the cake here as she showed those Blanche bums not to mess with her. And with Blanche taken care of, what better way than to celebrate Tatsuya's birthday in style. So that ends the Enrollment Arc, and it's onto the Nine Schools Competition arc that features a lot of new girls from other schools, so it will be something to look forward to.

                Episode 6

                Let the games begin!

It's onto the Nine Schools Competition arc where once again, it's much less story-driven as it's all about showcasing the girls. In Irregular, it took a few episodes before it got to the competition. But in this show, it happens right off the bat and all the other stuff about the games being sabotaged, at least this show tries to pretend it's not real. Nevertheless, it's great to see the girls here, especially those from the competitors as they have all sorts of interesting personalities. And then I remember that Mari wiped out in her event in order to save one of the competitors that left her injured and unable to continue. Her injury opens up the door for Miyuki to shine in her event, the Mirage Bat. Certainly a lot less story-focused than Irregular, and even more so with this episode as it felt like forever before even getting to the competition. And of course, there's more fanservice on display, though these girls are wearing something more modest than a towel when dipping in the hot springs. I'm looking forward to seeing the girls doing even more in the games.

                  By the numbers.

The competition continues with Shizuku up next facing off against Shiori in the rifle shooting event. Shiori puts up a great fight, but thanks to Tatsuya's expert engineering that Shizuku won and made it look easy. Then it's onto the surfing competition as Toko is ruling the waves, but Honoka shows she's no slouch, either as thanks to a flash of light she breezes through her heat. That defeat made Shiori nervous seeing that she's worried about her friendship with Airi, but she's just overthinking things. Pretty cute to see Toko and Honoka have that conversation, and there's a good amount of fanservice thrown in as after all this adaptation is not worried about the story seeing that Irregular has it covered. In any case, it's nice to see the girls get their chance to shine once again.

                    Episode 8

                    Break the ice.

And the competition continues with Airi dominating in her match against Subaru with tennis. Then there's the Ice Pillar Break event. Shiori and Eimi both show how strong they are in blowing away their opponent. But that's nothing compared to Miyuki's domination using magic that melts her opponent's pillars while keeping her own cold. Those girls may have shows how great they are, but Miyuki totally outclasses them all.

                      Episode 9

                      Light the wave.

And this episode goes to show that this show is far different than Irregular as it is all about the action and putting the cute girls on display. Such is the case here with the first half being Eimi against Shiori in the ice pillar event, while the second is about Honoka and Toko riding the waves. While Eimi's crazy plan to use her own ice pillar's to break her opponent's worked before, it only works as a surprise tactic and once Shiori studied her strategy, it was easy to come up with a plan of attack to strenthen her pillars by lining them up together to stop the tactic in its tracks. Good thing she learned from Tatsuya how to improvise and she launched them with great force to win, though it almost didn't work seeing that she was beat when she launched the last pillar for the win. And then there's Honoka whose sensitivity to light allows her to see the traps, and once again Toko anticipated it so that she would set dummies early in the course to make Honoka use up her energy before encountering the real ones later in the course. Once again, Honoka had to adjust, and with Tatsuya's expert training she did. That was some great action there going to show that these girls are capable of being as destructive as Tatsuya is.

                        Episode 10

                        She's on fire.

And it's the championship match between Miyuki and Shizuku in a match that has no bearing on the overall standings, and while Shizuku manages to block Miyuki's fire from melting her pillars, that also weakens them so that her AOE ice attack breaks them. While Shizuku knew that she was a huge underdog, that doesn't lessen the disappointment. And then Honoka wins her match in the Mirage Bat, and then comes the event that decides the winner of the competition, and the only one Tatsuya directly participates in as shows in Irregular. Once again, it's clear and obvious that whose who came in hoping for some good storytelling should just watch Irregular instead as this is all about the girls and action, and those pretty much dominated the episode once again.

                          Episode 11

                          Big brother's gonna be alright.

And now comes the big event that Tatsuya ended up competing in after the team that was supposed to participate got injured, and the detectives are on the case. They find out that the saboteurs are doing everything they can to make sure First High doesn't win, and that means having Tatsuya compete when he should be doing security. It's a good thing he has trained his sidekicks so well that they snuffed out part of the problem themselves. And the Third High girls offer help out seeing that they will only accept winning fair and square, and it was great to see these cuties all bonding together to take down these thugs. So with that, it's onto the Mirage Bat final as the competition comes to a close and First High is crowned the champions.
