    Episode 1

    Going on a hare-raising adventure.

So it begins with Sally meeting Frau, a rabbit in a seifuku and a scarf, and this bunny has some pretty sick martial arts moves. Then she gets caught and thrown into the cellar, but released by the knight Hawthorn that she befriends. Then a giant walrus ogre comes invading the kingdom and brutally slaughtering the soldiers in the path, while his partner Meki, who will join the party later as Carrot, is standing outside. And then Sally unlocks her sadistic side as that walrus was just no match for her. This episode actually starts a few episodes into the manga from what I have been hearing, so things felt like it should have happened a couple episodes later rather than at the beginning, all while the Momotaro in this show, Mikoto, has yet to show up. Not too sure what to think about this show, but it has intrigue even if the episode wasn't exactly the best way to start things out. The manga is supposed to be good, so at least I'm a bit hopeful things will turn out solidly given that the characters are an interesting bunch.

As always, trial period rules are in effect.

      Episode 2

      Now, she's only human.

Picking up after the previous episode (remember that episodes are airing out of order), the ogre girl who would later be known as Carrot unleashed a powerful blast to destroy the wall to let her walrus comrade invade the city, and that left her vulnerable since she needs to recharge and turns into a cute little ogre girl in doing so. That allowed Mikoto to swoop in and take out the source of her power, effectively making her like a normal human. And thus, she's thrown in jail where she is set to be interrogated, but Sally broke her out and together they escape town. Hawthorn went after them, but just as he was about to get help to chase them down, the kingdom instantly gets bulldozed by a different ogre. Seeing how cute the ogre girl is in her weakened state that it was amusing to see Sally so affectionate about her. Nevertheless, that ending was quite ominous, and had Sally not decided to help the ogre girl break out of jail and Hawthorn not chase them, they would have been dead. After what went down, Hawthorn pretty much has no choice but to tag along with the three now that the kingdom has been reduced to rubble. It will be interesting to see what comes next as after the next episode, the first episode in chronological order will be shown.

        Episode 3

        Choose your fate.

And now, Sally is presented with a big decision, either to side with Sumeragi and try and make peace between humans and ogres, or to eradicate every last ogre that Mikoto was born to do. But it's going to be awhile before Sally makes that decision as due to the show's broadcast airing things out of order. As it turns out, Sumeragi leads the ogres and has taken a human form as a way to try an co-exist with their sworn enemies, and his cute partner Juselino is also an ogre taking the form of a loli. Then there's Todoroki, who is in love with Carrot/Meki, but is none too pleased that she has been deogre-ized by Mikoto and is being forced to live like a human. While that's going on, Hawthorn is fighting in the coliseum in order to raise money since the team's financial situation is not exactly in great shape. Pretty much, this episode was all about giving the ogres some personality seeing that not all of them are monsters, but that means nothing to Mikoto.

So I can see why the show is airing episodes in this order as it's all about making sure viewers are aware of what's going on from all angles and where it all leads up to. Next time, the show airs with the first episode chronologically.

          Episode 4

          When Mikoto met Sally.

So after three episodes that shows the dilemma Sally is facing down the road, the show goes back to the beginning to show how everything changed for Sally when she met Mikoto. She's the princess of a kingdom and was not allowed to leave to venture out into the world as she is far more interested in being an adventurer than a queen. She was pretty feminine back in the day as she had long hair and wore a dress all the time. But everything changed with her fateful encounter with Mikoto, and the subsequent ogre invasion in which Mikoto singlehandedly slaughtered them before they could kill any civilian there. Seeing that the place wasn't safe anymore that the king decided to let Sally go on her adventure, though it wouldn't be until a month later that Sally would cut her hair and wear something better suited for exploration. And so, that's how it all began, and it's hard to believe that she's a princess as nobody would think of her as that with the way she looks in the present.

And thus, the trial period is over, but I think I'll keep going at least through the end of the trial period. The show has some pretty bad production values, but the characters are great, while the story, albeit flawed and more so with the order being rearranged, has a lot of appeal and intrigue to it.

            Episode 5

Ogre instincts sucked the blood out of him.

And now, an episode that explains why humans and ogres can't ever get along, at least with the way they are right now. Frau and Carrot have established a close relationship, and while Carrot despises humans, she doesn't despise companions no matter who they are. And Carrot meets another fellow ogre in Kyuketsuki, a vampire who fell in love with a human. But when they were getting married, the vampire's ogre instincts completely take over and he kills her. So it's those ogre instincts that cause them to become hostile towards humans, but in Carrot's case because she lost her horn she doesn't have to worry about that. And it turns out that Frau can revive as she has died before only to revive, and she does that when her upper body was destroyed. This certainly adds a lot of depth to the story that leads to the big decision as it's no secret that ogres and humans don't get along. But is it possible for it to happen someday? Well, it's not for the lack of trying, but it's the unfortunate truth that their instincts will always get in the way unless they are hornless.

              Episode 6

              Nun shall live.

And now, an episode focused on two ogres who are no longer have their horns. First, it's about Carrot as she continues to take a liking to Sally, all while they witness the vampire's corpse being burned at stake. Before departing to the afterlife, the vampire says something about Frau as apparently she's an ogre disguised as a harefolk. And then the second half is about Millia, who was introduced earlier in chronological order, and she has taken quite a liking to Mikoto, except that there's just one problem in that Millia is an ogre. She still has a bit of horn left even though it's mostly broken off. But when an ogre knight comes to try and take her back, she tears the remnant of her horn and faints. It's a good thing Mikoto doesn't harm anything that's not an ogre as that's who Millia is now. Pretty amusing introductions here.

So with that, the extended trial period is over, and seeing how I'm invested with the characters that I'm opting to continue onwards to the end. Not to mention, with all that skipping around that I would like to see the gaps filled in. The story writing definitely made a curious and baffling decision, but I'm still enjoying it.

                Episode 7

                She's tougher than she looks.

And now, it's back to the episode following the destruction of Rimdarl by Somenki that among the kingdom's citizens, only Hawthorn survived. And it is later revealed that Berett, a guy who looks too much like a girl, also survived when he was teleported out of the kingdom by a witch just before the kingdom was wiped off the face of the planet. Somenki is quite dangerous, but he's someone that's no match for Sally and Sumeragi is well aware of that to the point where he calls off the attack. And at this point, Meki is officially now known as Carrot named by Frau after her favorite food, and Millia is formally introduced. Carrot's antics are really cute. So with that, I was hoping that the one immediately following this in chronological order would air, and then the last three episodes air in order, but the next one will be the one in which Sally makes her decision after being presented with that question in the third episode.

So far, episodes 2, 3, 9, 1, 7, 8, and now 4 in chronological order have aired in this order for the broadcast, and I kind of see what the director was trying to achieve with this order of airing. But in any case, watching it this way just doesn't feel right. Nevertheless, I'm curious to see which route Sally goes with the next episode being 10, and given the title I have to believe that she finds a way to make peace with both parties.

                  Re: Episode 7

Forever shall she be Carrot! In regards to the none chronological order of the series. Would it be wrong to pretend everything after episode 3 (9 in chronological) and before episode 8 (10 in chronological) is just Sally having a flashback moment about events that happened before then? Not that works for any moment that Sally wasn't there for...

                    Episode 8

                    Her decision is shocking.

So in the end, Sally chose Mikoto, but not exactly supporting his ogre extermination mission as Mikoto didn't take the decision very well. And after that, three more ogres arrive at the scene to attack the town led by Todoroki and his lightning magic. They are doing this to take revenge for Meki's death not realizing that she's still alive, although she's not the same person she was before. Frau takes on the eagle, and her wooden mochi hammer isn't really the best weapon to use against that beast. And then there's Carrot letting Shinki know that she's still alive, though Shinki doesn't take the fact that she has been interacting with the humans very well. Then there's Sally dealing with Sumeragi as even though their philosophies on the surface align, they do have their differences that are in conflict with each other. And then there's Hawthorn taking on Todoroki and while he puts up a good fight, he's no match against his full strength. But thankfully Winny arrived just in the nick of time to save him, so once again he escapes death. I had a feeling Sally would pick Mikoto, but at the same time still support Sumeragi's vision in her own way.

                      Episode 9

                      From half-ogre to ogre slayer.

And in what is actually the final episode of this series when watched in the proper order, it's an episode that explains how Mikoto came to be as it is revealed that he's a half-ogre who had ripped out his horn, born to an ogre father and a human mother. His father was a good man, but then his ogre instincts took over and he ate his wife, much like what happened with the vampire, and that changed everything for Mikoto. He would leave Mikoto with Hiko to be his adoptive father, and then at his request he was killed. There, Mikoto was trained by Hiko, but then one day the Lord Shikin arrived and he was quite a strong opponent, too much for Hiko, but Mikoto came back, inherited his sword, and then killed the boss himself. A nicely done episode here showing exactly where Mikoto was coming from and showing how he came to despise ogres, all while going to show that Mikoto has some ogre blood in him. So with that, the next episode is going to be the one that follows the previous episode before going back to the middle of the show to finish off the broadcast.

                        Episode 10

                        Making coexistence a reality.

And thus, the main plot of this show comes to a close with Frau killing Basoo, Carrot using the wall to her advantage to kill Shinkai, and Hawthorn being given a sword that once belonged to Frau to defeat Todoroki courtesy of Winnie. Then there's Sally as she promises Sumeragi to make coexistence between humans and ogres a reality someday as the coexistence faction leader was testing her to see how serious she was when she sided with Mikoto. While Todoroki desires coexistence as well, and even more so with Carrot essentially a human now, he would rather not do it with the help of a human, which proved to be a fatal mistake as Sumeragi saw that as being hostile to his faction and he was executed for that. Had he simply brushed his pride aside and become one of Sally's allies, he would have been a great companion in Sally's army and would be together with Carrot, but instead the stench of humanity wore thin on him. So with that, the main plot of the anime adaptation is complete, but there are still two more episodes left to go that were skipped in the broadcast.

                          Episode 11

                          Everybody gather around the witch.

And to finish this show, the story goes back to the middle after Rimdarl was eradicated leaving only Hawthorn and Berrett as survivors, and Sally meets up with Winnie. Sally undergoes training seeing that she has great powers, but seeing how it activates unconsciously that she's trying to become more reliant on her own abilities rather than that. And then Winnie learns about the devil that Sally is, though nobody seems to know about it. And then everybody gathers to start a big skirmish, first the elves and lizardman who are mortal enemies, and then Hatsuki the nun ogre who would later loser her horn to become just like Carrot, and then more ogres that includes a giant tree. Things sure got out of hand here quickly. One more episode left to finish this segment in the middle that was skipped.

                            Episode 12 (Finale)

                            Peace or famine?

So it ends with Sally being tree-hugged by Juki before Sally awakens her powers, and this time she is in control of it to tell that tree that he's asking to be chopped down. Sally has her resolution in that she will bring peace to the world, and anybody who gets in the way will be taken down without mercy. The fact that Juki even threw Hatsuki under the bus is proof that he won't stand for peace. And after that battle, the elves and lizardmen are both getting along after that skirmish. And thus, Sally makes her mission clear, though as what would be seen in the episodes that I have already seen that happen after this one chronologically there are going to be a ton of bumps on the road. Meanwhile, there's Mikoto meeting Sumeragi for the first time, and he's definitely mistrustful of him, though not so much the other way around. A solid enough episode to end things on when watched in broadcast order, but far from the most ideal way to end things on.

Overall, this show is a mixed bag of good and not-so-good things put together. The characters are lovable, the story has some nice entertainment value to them, the plot is decently constructed, and the action is well-utilized. But on the flipside, this show suffers from two really major issues in that the show just doesn't have much production value to it, all while the storytelling is all over the map, part of it being caused by watching the show in this rearranged order rather than the intended order. Perhaps, the experience is better when watched in chronological order, but things just don't feel like they connect the way they should be watching it like this. Nevertheless, it was a fun ride, and the great characters are what made this show worthwhile, but the story and low production values pretty much holds this show back.
