    Episode 1

No shadow left in the dark.

That was really cute to see the newly-named Emilico being all ditzy and playing with Kate, who is a shadowy version of herself. Pretty amusing to see Emilico doing all sorts of clumsy things, all while Kate is the much more level-headed person who is a great companion seeing that she's in over her head too much. Not much has been explained yet about what the shadows really are and how they came to be aside from the fact that they are the other half of the person they look alike. Seeing Kate smiling sure hit the spot. In any case, it's off to a great start as the atmosphere is just right for a show like this, and I'm hoping that a nice story can build that uncovers more about what the shadow companions are all about.

Like always, the trial period rules are in effect, and I will make a decision on this show after seeing how it stacks up on my watchlist.

      Episode 2

      Live to serve.

Now that Emilico and Kate are introduced, a number of the other servants get introduced with most of the focus on Mia, who serves Sarah and is the one who taught Emilico how to clean. Seeing that they drop lots of soot behind that it takes quite a dedicated team of servants to take care of them. And then comes trouble when Emilico cleans up a spill using a plush Kate treasures so much, but she then realizes that she never told Emilico not to touch it, all while Emilico fixes it up like a good servant. And then she has one of her own she drops, and falls down to get it, but more trouble is stirred up there at the end when those two meet up with Mia and Sarah. Mia sure has problems there, and things are definitely not all well and good. After a lighthearted beginning, things are getting ominous, especially after what Mia said to Emilico about being a failure of a servant. Pretty interesting to see what comes next with the big question being what Shadows House is, but in the meantime Emilico and Kate are developing quite a close relationship.

        Episode 3

        Soot. It's alive!

And now, an episode that explains why cleaning up soot is no simple task in this house as it turns out soot is a living thing, and if left unchecked, they can possess people, just like what that one loose soot monster did with Rosemary that was dealt with quickly. But soot does have its uses seeing that Emilico puts some of it in her plush doll to give her Rolly some life. This goes to show why it takes a dedicated task force to keep things clean in this house. Next time, the head of the household shows up and he is a pretty strict and demanding person. The ominousness just keeps on building.

          Episode 4

It's her way or the highway.

And now, an episode that focuses on Kate's new friends Rum and Shaun as they are two servant dolls who are struggling to meet Barbie's demanding standards. While Kate's clumsiness is well-documented, for Shaun his eye sight is bad, while Rum's shyness holds her back. The three go and investigate the Shadows House to try and get to the bottom the mysteries in this place, and one of them is a soot leak where they find out that somewhere in a hidden room, soot has been leaking out.

It will be interesting to see where this leads to, but one worrying sign about the direction this show will go is that it omits a character from the manga who has a critical role in this show, and this was the same studio that totally botched The Promised Neverland season 2 (though this was more the fault of the producers than the animation staff), but unlike with that show, the manga is ongoing and it's not very noticeable to those who haven't read the manga, at least not yet. In any case, I'm down for the ride as there are lots of intriguing mysteries going on with this show.

            Episode 5

            Judgment Day is here.

And now, the dolls are put to the ultimate test with the debut to determine if they are worthy of being servants or if they are going to be discarded into the scrap heap. This doesn't bode well for Kate given the kind of dolls Barbie prefers to have on her team as Emilico's recklessness and rebelliousness has gotten herself into trouble so many times. And indeed, things are not looking well as with that ranking shelf, Emilico is just one misstep away from being scrapped, all while the snobbish Patrick is at the top. Seeing that all Edward said was to prove themselves and not explaining anything specific that it goes to show that being a doll for this family is a very demanding tasks and those who are not cut out for it are ruthlessly disposed of. Things sure are getting bad seeing that the soot evaporation is making her look bad, as well as her need to restrain herself when she eats something there. Nevertheless, this debut stuff is quite intense going to show how this family means business.

              Episode 6

              Lost in the garden.

The servants were told to eat their sweets, and Edward wasn't lying as there are pieces of a key hidden in their sweets like feves that's hidden in cake and meant to bring good fortune to those who manage to stumble upon them. But in this case, they are pieces of a key that opens the door to the garden where the await their big challenge to pass the debut, and that is to navigate through the garden maze to find their master. They have maps that have the locations of the masters, but it doesn't say whose master it is. And then everybody is given an item with Emilico choosing a cart, which is only useful if she's partnering up with someone like she's doing with Rum when they run into each other. Pretty ominous atmosphere here as the dolls are in the dark about a lot of things, and it will be interesting to see what this leads to. Kate was nearly thrown off-kilter by John, but she kept her cool, but that certainly is an ominous sign of things to come, and not to mention the Shadows family seeing it all going down.

It is interesting we are halfway through one cour (anyone know how many eps are planned?) and we still don't know anything about the wider world where the shadows reside. We are learning everything piece meal through mostly Emilico's eyes, just as the dolls do. I am curious to find out who the shadows are, how they function, and what the soot is all about.

                  Episode 7

Three heads are better than one.

It's a good thing Emilico, Rum, and Shaun are teaming up to get through this maze as there's quite a lot of mysteries and hints to uncover in this labyrinth. Not to mention, Shaun's magnifying glass and Rum's lantern come in quite handy in this situation that allows the dolls to figure out where they need to go. And of course, Emilico's cart can carry things that by dumb luck, ended up being the reason they were able to figure out that the rabbit statue unlocks the gate. Those three definitely would have failed if they had to do everything themselves, but they were lucky to find each other and figure out how to navigate through this maze. Shaun found his master, so he's through, and now Emilico and Rum need to find their's as while they now know where they are, getting there will be the challenge, and they are up against the clock. Pretty cute to see Emilico doing anything she can to find the mystery, all while the Shadows family is certainly enjoying everything that's going on. Lots of mysteries being uncovered, and I can't wait to see what else comes out of this.

What I don't understand is how Edward, as a normal human, is able to abuse the young Shadows with no repercussions. Normal humans in this world, or at least on the Shadow manor, seem to be just objects objects to kept or disposed of at nothing more than the mere whim of the Shadows. The relationship dynamics here still need to be unraveled.

                      Episode 8

                      Nowhere to go but up.

Lou's observational skills are really something as while Emilico's group looked at the fine print to locate their servants, Lou paid attention to soot emissions using that to find her master, and seeing that she passed by Rum's master that she has left an opening for Rum to use to reach Shirley. As for Emilico's group, Shaun has found his master and heading for the exits, while they run into a dead end after entering a soot-infested maze believing that the map was wrong. But it turns out it was the right way and they just had to make use of the clue inside that symbol as the place they needed to be is a level up. So with that, Shaun, Rum, and Lou have found their servants, while Ricky is left on his own to find Patrick, and Emilico is getting close to Kate, who realizes that her soot emission could get her skewered with the cage falling apart, and Emilico's motivational shout got her to suppress her negative emotions. And then that ending, Edward had this debut being part of some sinister scheme as it turns out he is a Shadow, and now the big bad in this show has been revealed. The drama just keeps on building in a great way, and it will be interesting to see the payoff from all this as Edward is about to wreak havoc.

I am not yet sure Edward is the ultimate bad guy boss here, but it is surely a possibility. I am not even sure he is a Shadow, as being able to shift to human form and back is certainly unique to what we have seen so far. But one thing he is a cold, calculating, scheming, ruthless SOB, and if I suspect correctly, a psychopath. In the end, I believe Emilico will emerge as true leader and get the Shadow/doll pairs to work together to go against Edward and his plans. Well, I hope anyway...

                          Episode 9

                          Cutting it close.

The test continues as Lou is the first to clear the test, while Shaun found his master, and it turns out that John has brute strength, so it's no wonder why he easily broke out. Rum and Emilico have located their masters and are on their way, all while Ricky is desperate. His pride nearly got the best of him as he was about to be smashed by a boulder before calling for John's help to smash it. He has the shears that Lou chose, and they come in handy... for Emilico that is as she's in the worst position to rescue her master. Had she chosen the keys, she would have aced it since the crane is locked behind a door, but how was she supposed to have known that? But thanks to Ricky passing by with his master giving her the shears, she cuts the branches and climbs on the crane just as Kate's soot breaks the cage to send it crashing, and with a leap of faith, they are down safely. Emilico is one tough doll servant, and seeing that she survived falling from the top floor of the mansion, this was nothing. So with that, time is running out with Lou and one other having cleared the event, while Emilico is up against the clock just needing to head for the exit.

                            Episode 10

Not a moment too soon for soot.

While Emilico found Kate, unfortunately they don't have enough time to get out of the garden by foot, so instead those two take the express lane by riding the cart, while Kate awakens her ability to control soot to get the two out just in the nick of time. So in the end, everybody except Rum passes the debut, and as such Rum is headed for the incinerator or whatever this family uses to dispose defective dolls. The four have a party, but something is certainly amiss about all this as Emilico puts on a creepy face there. And then the head of the family makes his appearance and he gives off an ominous aura. So it turns out that this test was designed to make Emilico fail, but Emilico defied the odds and they are none too pleased about it. Something is definitely rotten about this family, but for now Emilico lives to see another day after that dramatic ending to the debut and it will be interesting to see what the last three episodes bring to the table seeing that Kate is different from everybody else as symbolized by her choosing Emilico as the name of her servant.

Well, some of the details are now emerging about who the Shadows are. It appears that the Shadows originated from "soot fairies" or some such that figured out how to become more substantial and human like. Unfortunately, they need real humans for their "faces" and they have to subsume the human to do it. But it also looks like Kate has acquired another human characteristic: a conscience. She recognizes what is happening is evil. The question remains is what she'll do about it? It appears the first thing she'll do is attempt to get Emilico out from under the influence of the soot coffee. However, if Kate fights what is happening, will she also be fighting the very thing that will make her a true living and independent being? Or is there some way for a Shadow to become whole without destroying a human in the process?
