Wondering where it all went wrong, Takemichi suddenly finds himself travelling through time, ending up 12 years in the past—when he was still in a relationship with Hinata. Realizing he has a chance to save her, Takemichi resolves to infiltrate the Tokyo Manji Gang and climb the ranks in order to rewrite the future and save Hinata from her tragic fate.

    Episode 1

Stopping a crime 12 years in the making.

This feels just like Erased as a crime happens, and Takemichi gets thrown into the past in order to correct history, and then return to the present where he corrects one thing, but his main objective is still unfulfilled. Takemichi's girlfriend Hinata and her younger brother Naoto get killed as they get caught up in a gang fight, and with Takemichi feeling so dejected and unable to think straight anymore, he is pushed into an incoming commuter train and gets thrown 12 years into the past back to the time he was a gangster. He made some poor choices in life, but things took a turn for the worst when he left the gang. But then he warns Naoto what was coming in 12 years, and that was at least enough to save Naoto, but after returning to the present Hinata is still dead. This show was adapted from a great manga series, and so far it's looking very nice, though far from a masterpiece as things just happened too fast, all while lacking the drama that made Erased so great. In any case, it's off to a strong start.

As always, this show will undergo the usual trial period rules before I make a decision on this show.

      Episode 2

      This is his fight.

Now that Naoto is aware of Takemichi's power to go back in time 12 years and has worked his way up in the ranks at the police he's now going back in time again with more intel. So back he goes and he spawns in the middle of a fight he's supposed to win, but gets beaten to a pulp instead. And then Takemichi sees Hinata at her house. Then it's onto another fight that Takuya is supposed to take part in, but knowing how weak he is that it's not going to end well for him. While Takemichi has the power to change the past, he needs to be careful as death flags have been raised for Takuya and somebody else will get killed. That goes to show how difficult it is to change the past.

        Episode 3

        A gang for the good.

Here comes Manjiro, aka Mikey, as he is one of the captains of the gang. Takemichi's next objective is to make sure Mikey doesn't meet up with Tetta as they are polar opposites of each other. Mikey is a good guy who wants to turn this gang into something for the good of society. He becomes besties with Takemichi, and together they are hoping to make their gang into something good. That said, it looks like Tetta is going to become quite a big menace there with Naoto's warning, and if Mikey is a good guy, there's just no telling how bad Tetta will be as thi sis one of the big keys to ensuring that Hinata survives.

          Re: Episode 3

Looks like Takemichi is really starting to dig in and change the past. Instead of running away he is worming his way ever deeper into the gang and catching the eye of the more influential and powerful members. While at least he sees the gangs with the eyes of an experienced adult, and understands the how evil gangs are, he is being drawn in ever deeper. While the desired result (saving Hina), will hopefully be realized, it will be interesting to see how his actions change the future beyond that and how he will be personally affected.

Now, one thing I have to complain about is the school's reaction to Manjiro and his underling's appearance at the school. Or rather, the lack thereof. Really now, a couple of non-students show up to a school, beat up a bunch of students and the biggest reaction is the teacher meekly saying, "you are disrupting class". The cops were not called. Really? Yeah, it doesn't fit the show's narrative, but still they could have come up with a scenario that was at least a bit more realistic.

            Episode 4

            Make Tokyo Manji great again.

Just when Takemichi has having a great time, he's back in the present and apparently the trigger for that is a handshake. Nevertheless, he's learning more and more about the past, but now it has become clear that Kisaki is the root cause of all the problems. He meets up with Akkun for the first time in a decade as he reveals that he's the one who pushed Takemichi into the train tracks that would have killed him had it not been for his time leap, as well as Naoto being there to save him, and Mikey is a hot mess. And the reason for that is Kisaki as he's forcing Akkun to follow his every order. And then he jumps off the roof of the host club he owns as he's breaking free of Kisaki and is placing his faith in Takemichi to save the gang. As it turns out, when time passes in the past, he's out cold in the present for the same amount of time, so Takemichi needs to be careful about when he uses his time leap. The plot is certainly thickening, but it is clear now that Kisaki must be stopped at all costs.

              Episode 5

              Making it past.

Next critical juncture is to deal with Draken as he's set to be killed in a battle between Toman and Moebius, and it turns out that they understand each other very well that could lead to them preventing Kisaki's grubby paws from corrupting the gang. So back to the past he goes for the next two weeks, and he's greeted by Emma at the karaoke parlor in her underwear. It's a good thing that while Takemichi outed that causally that Hina didn't get the wrong message. Lots of setup for what figures to be a huge fight seeing that Moebius is quite a powerful gang compared to Toman back in the day, and protecting Draken is going to be quite a tough task, but this is something Takemichi needs to do considering that he's giving up everything to bring Hinata back.

OK, I don't follow why Akkun tried to kill him. It does not make any sense to me. It had been ten years since they met, Takemichi had nothing to do with the gangs in all that time, so he should have been well off the radar. Furthermore, his appearance is radically different than when he was in middle school, so he was hardly recognizable. Was Akkun aware of Takemichi and tracked him after he ran away? Why? Akkun said Draken "shouldn't" have died implying that maybe he knows something about the strange story unfolding, yet he also says he only realizes that Takemichi can time travel after he pushes him onto the track, the implication being Akkun is being carried along with events like everyone else. Only speculation now, but maybe Akkun was ordered to murder Takemichi because someone else is aware of his potential to alter the timeline and was taking steps to prevent it. Hopefully they will address this in a later episode.

I notice that not only Takemichi, but Naoto is immune to the effects of the time travel. After Takemichi's return to the future, they discuss the changes Takemichi wrought during his last visit to the past. I would have expected Naoto to just know about the altered past, not the original, but he does. Must have something to do with the bond between the two and how their handshake initiates the time travel.

                    Episode 6

                    Taking the war to them.

As it turns out, Moebius didn't kill Draken, but it set things into motion for somebody from Tokyo Manji to kill him. As for who orchestrated it, that's somebody Osanai must not speak of, but I'm pretty sure I know who that guy is. After all, if Osanai can't speak his name even though Moebius is long gone and he's just a construction worker with no gang affiliation, he's being watched. Nevertheless, things aren't looking good as if it weren't bad enough that Mikey and Draken are dead set on going through with the war, now the Moebius gang is bringing the war over into their turf instead, and Osanai is a much different guy than he is in the present.

                      Episode 7

                      Stabbed in the back.

As Osanai in the future explained, that war between Toman and Moebius was only the trigger that would lead to Draken's death, and the exact moment that led to that was Pah stabbing Osanai in the back after the Moebius leader had beaten Pah to a pulp only to get his ass kicked by Draken after a failed surprise attack. Pah ended up being the fall guy for this mess as he went to jail, but Osanai survived. Nevertheless, that led to a rift between Mikey and Draken all while Takemichi ended up in the hospital. And then those two fought each other in front of Takemichi's house, and that was a pretty hilarious fight there with those two guys hurling and breaking Takemichi's precious possessions at each other. While the war at least ended up not being as bad as it could, there is still two more days to try and figure this out as if nothing is done, Draken is a goner, and of course all hell breaks loose after that happens.

                        Episode 8

                        Whydunnit?

So it turns out Mikey and Draken didn't have any rift in their friendship as they were simply having a disagreement over whether or not to post bail for Pah as he's in jail for a year, and it could have been a lot longer had Osanai died. Those two were just putting on an act, and Takemichi literally had shit on his head the whole time. But then Takemichi makes a big mistake letting his guard down as he spends the fateful day at the summer festival with Hinata, and it turns out that it was not Mikey who killed Draken, but a member of his faction Kiyomasa as he has no respect for Mikey and gets some Moebius goons to capture Draken. But the one who would go on to kill Draken is not Kiyomasa as it is none other than Peh as he's besties with Pah, and Peh blames Draken for his imprisonment without knowing the whole truth. Takemichi should of stayed with Draken this whole time as even if Mikey didn't do it, that didn't stop anybody associated with him from doing it.

                          Vengeance is misguided.

So in the end, it was Kiyomasa who would deliver the killing blow to Draken as just when it looked like Peh was the culprit, he was being used by Hanma to get his revenge for letting Pah get thrown in jail. Mikey had to beat it into his head that he was never going to abandon Pah no matter what. Hanma took the situation to his advantage in order to cause Toman to split. While that's all well and good after getting reinforcements to face off against Toman, Kiyomasa took advantage of the situation as while everybody was distracted by all the chaos, Kiyomasa took out the knife to stab Draken from behind. Lots of drama going on around here going to show that wasn't obvious all this time who the killer was, but nevertheless Takemichi failed, and now he's dealing with a lot of hell that would follow. What that is remains to be seen.

                            Hold the fort.

Draken wasn't dead, but nevertheless the situation remained dire as it was going to be awhile before an ambulance could arrive. While Takemichi took Draken and snuck away, Kiyomasa followed them and things looked really bad as he brought a knife to the battlefield and were out for blood wanting to make sure that Draken was dead, all while killing Takemichi in the process. But Takemichi made quite a stand there taking Kiyomasa down with a wrestling move despite losing a lot of blood after Kiyomasa stabbed his hand. And things were looking really dire there, but in comes Akkun to the rescue and they stall just long enough for the ambulance to arrive. Takemichi sure did get his revenge in a big way there going to show that he's not the same timid kid he once was.

                              For a better future.

It was quite a scare with Draken going into cardiac arrest, but in the end he lives thanks to the doctors. So now that Draken lives to see another day (and 12 years+ for that matter), it's back to the present where Takemichi notices a lot of things that are different. He's still employed at his job at a video rental store, he has a scar from that nasty stab wound given to him by Kiyomasa on his hand, Akkun is now a hair stylist, and most importantly, Hinata is apparently alive and well. Seems like he has fixed everything that led to the grim future he experienced, but something is definitely amiss about all this as there's jut no way everything is picture perfect. In any case, Takemichi got the job done and all seems well, though I'm pretty sure something else is about to go wrong.
