Set in a world of cruelty and heartbreak, Fairy Ranmaru: Anata no Kokoro Otasuke Shimasu follows five young men who work at the mysterious "Bar F" and who offer to heal the hearts of their clients, wiping away their tears and causing smiles to bloom like flowers. They take no payment... aside from stealing their clients' hearts.

    Episode 1

A heart in need is a fairy's job, indeed.

Pretty weird show here, but then again the concept of magical boys is weird in itself. So it begins by outlining the fairy's version of the Ten Commandments as these boys are out to heal hearts and help others find love, though these boys can't fall in love themselves. The first client is a girl who has been cyberbulled nearly to death as had it not been for Ranmaru, she would have been run over by that truck. And then Ranmaru takes on the job of helping and engaging in a Madoka Magica-esque style battle against the inner demons that infects that girl's heart. And when all is said and done, that girl is ignoring that bully like any girl should do. While I didn't have much expectation for this show, I'm certainly intrigued by the weirdness of this show, and of course the battles that feel like something straight out of Madoka Magica, though without the downside of being a magical girl as they have to essentially throw their life away to become a magical girl. But here, the boys just can't fall in love and keep their identities secret in addition to the rules that any high school kid must abide by.

As usual, the trial period rules are in effect.

      Episode 2

      Burning with wrath.

Looks like the next four episodes will be about the boys of this magical boys squad, and after Ranmaru went in the first episode, it's now onto Homura, who hails from the Ignis clan. He looks up to his father, and now he's putting it to the test when he sees a mangaka in distress as she's being made to draw something shameful and counterintuitive to her style thanks to her shady editor. So Homura springs into action and fixes what ails her in another Madoka Magica-style battle. It turns out that the editor has a history of harassment, and what this mangaka needed to do was just to change editors, and this one is quite impressed with her work to get it serialized pretty quickly. While the show's production values aren't great, this show's concept is what I am enjoying the most about this show.

        Episode 3

        Mean with envy.

Next fairy fighter to be featured is Uruu, the water fairy, and the next client whose heart is in need of saving is a lady who is in love with the popular Soji, and is going so far as to make him popular by buying out all of his photo albums. So Uruu is thrust into action, and unlike the previous cases, this time it's the client herself who is the root of the problem. What Uruu did was in violation of the laws of being a fairy, and there's going to be quite a big fallout from this, but it remains to be seen what that is. Nevertheless, while it's still a monster-of-the-week episode with a different fairy featured (and will probably be that way for the next two episodes), this episode does a solid job in changing things up with so that this time it's not a simple case of a boy coming to the rescue of a damsel with a traumatized heart in need of healing when this time that said damsel is the one causing it with her destructive acts.

          Episode 4

          This idol is idle.

Moving right along after Ranmaru, Homura, and Uruu got their episodes, this one is all about Jyuka, the little one of the group who wants to be cool, but comes off as being cute that contradicts what he really wants to be. The client this time is a struggling idol Kei who is being bullied by her fellow idolmates, and in particular by the center Eru. It turns out that she's degenerate and has been having private affairs with her devoted fans. But that's all about to change as Jyuka springs into action and exposes the truth to the public about just how degenerate most of this idol group is. Unlike the previous battles where the featured character did it all himself, this time Jyuka got some assistance from Ranmaru as he freed him when he was immobilized by those vines. So with Eru and company exposed for their character problems, Kei is the new center, and all seems to be well despite the fact that the idol group's reputation took quite a big hit. Next time, it will be Takara's turn as he's the last of the boys who hasn't gotten his episode in the spotlight.

Thus ends the trial period for this show, and while this appears to be something I wouldn't care about, I'm enjoying it more than I initially thought even if it isn't that great of a show. Anyway, I'll give it two more episodes seeing that I want to see what happens after all the boys get their time in the spotlight as it figures to have quite a huge shift after that.

            Episode 5

A fairy with a heart of gold.

As expected, this episode focuses on the last of the boys, Takara. He's from a clan where boys are rarely born. As for the client, it's the daughter of a struggling business owner as her mother died and her father was tricked by a shady financer into taking a deal that is incurring loads of debt for her. So Takara takes it to the that guy and sends him to prison while Ruise got her livelihood back. While it's another magical boy of the week, this is the last one and the next episode is going to be the most critical one of this series as now the show transitions into the next phase. Takara is quite lady's man there, and seeing that he wants a son to pass down his powers for a tribe that only produces one boy for every bazillion or so girls this improves his chances. That was some battle there against those Picasso pieces, but out of all the boys, he handled himself the best. Now, I'm curious to see what happens next.

              Episode 6

              Not on her grandmother's grave.

Now that the boys have each had their turn in the spotlight, it looks like the boys will get another round, but with more attention paid to what's going on from the fairy world. As it turns out, there's a dark faction looming on the horizon as these guys, which Chilka is a part of, have been turning the fairy world into a wasteland. So with that in mind, Ranmaru has another opportunity to fix an ailing lady's heart, this time a salarywoman who is being overworked for a black company that engages in consumer fraud. It's already bad enough that her boss is working her to the bone to do something illegal, but it gets even worse when her grandmother is about to pass away, and he won't even let her quit her job to see her, threatening to sue her if she leaves. Thus, it's Ranmaru into action, and after being fed lies, Ranmaru was able to put that bastard in his place. That ailing grandmother lie was really something, but it turns out that his grandmother is none too pleased that her grandson is doing all these awful things. And save for that lady's grandmother passing away, she was able to not only see her, but to turn the tables against her boss to put him where he belongs.

                Episode 7

                Can't make this stuff up.

Next up it's Homura's turn for a second go-around as he's dealing with the same mangaka he saved as while she's no longer working for that exploitive editor anymore, she's facing another problem in that she's being accused of plagiarizing somebody else's work. And this battle is not quite as cut and dry as it was previously as there are lots of bystanders involved on the battlefield. It turns out that the accuser was using this as a publicity stunt. And then there's Chilka who delivers a nasty blow to Homura just as he solved the problem and saved her heart again. Things are getting dark here as not only is Homura is down, but now somebody is aware of his identity.

                  Episode 8

Not in front of the kids.

While Homura is recovering after an intense battle that left him all battered and bruised, Jyuka gets his second turn, and the next client is a kindergarten teacher who is a hard worker and respected by the kids. While that sounds all well and good, the principal is another matter entirely as she's setting a very bad example for them as she has been hitting it up in the host club, among other things. And as if that weren't bad enough, she demands that teacher to come to school despite falling ill, and that's when she has taken things quite far as the teacher has been overworked to the bone largely because she loves her kids but is taking advantage of the situation. So Jyuka springs into action and that old hag is taught a lesson to never disrespect anybody's hard work. It's a relatively normal case compared to the first two for the second round of action, but nevertheless the ominous vibes continues now that Chilka has been established as a menace that the boys realize is going to pose a threat to their heart-healing services.

                    Episode 9

Her family is not a work of art.

It's now Uruu's turn for his second go-around as he's helping a high school girl who is a talented and aspiring painter. That sounds all well and good, except that her family situation is a mess with her mother cheating on her husband and daring some scumbag who is just exploiting her like crazy. Birika just wants that guy out of his life, and Uruu is there to fix that. And of course, this one continues to have the dark undertones compared to the first round of cases as while the relationship ended with Birika's mother being dumped, she would go on to commit suicide. That was a bittersweet ending to this case as Birika is now living without a mother, but at the very least she can move on with her life after the sequence of events that happened. And of course, Chilka continues to lurk in the background as it's quite obvious that he's the final boss that the boys need to deal with. But before that, Takara gets his second turn in the spotlight before moving to the end game with Chilka and the fairy realms.

                      Episode 10

                      Putting everything on the line.

As expected, this episode focuses on Takara to complete the second round of showcases. He's helping an adult entertainer in Tina who is also a mother, and is doing everything she can to support her husband's dream of becoming a novelist, but he's also a compulsive gambler as he is that desperate to realize his dream. That has been wearing thin on their relationship, and thus it's Takara to the rescue as he helps Tina patch things up, though it was quite a difficult fight seeing that Takara's mother got involved, something he's not on good terms with. She nearly took him down with that hedonism honey, but his comrades came to the rescue, and Takara did the rest. So in the end, they are moving to New York and the husband hit the jackpot, though is being targeted for winning too much. Pretty standard episode that was, but now things move towards the end game as it turns out Chilka is quite popular in the human world, or at least he was since he used to belong to an idol group, and Procyon is especially suspicious. It will be interesting to see what happens next time now that Chilka really gets involved.

                        Episode 11

                        Go to hell.

Now that every boy has had his second time in the spotlight, it's onto the endgame, and it turns out that Ranmaru, Chilka, and the queen once formed an idol group and were besties with each other. Ranmaru's real name is Betelgeuse, while Chilka's is Sirius, and the queen is Procyon. Procyon has a noble goal there to use the heart energy to build a kingdom. But then it got too big for her own good, and corruption started running rampant. It's pretty understandable why Chilka doesn't approve, but when Ranmaru defended her, that's when things started to go wrong. And what pushed Chilka over the edge was that Procyon had Chilka's girlfriend killed. Quite a lot of stuff revealed here, and it's easy to understand where Chilka is coming from realizing that the mess going on was all the queen's fault. Even so, it's hard to justify what Chilka is doing there as it's not exactly getting it done the right way and all. One more episode left to go.

                          Episode 12 (Finale)

                          Another heart saved.

So it turns out that the queen is actually the one at fault for this mess and not Chilka as it was her demand for absolute obedience that got the kingdom into such a hazardous and dire situation in the first place. And then she tries to pit Uruu and Homura against each other by revealing that Homura's father killed Uruu's mother, but those two have nothing against each other despite what happened between their parents. Likewise after Uruu and Homura put on the yaoi, so does Ranmaru and Chilka, all while Hojo is still alive and learns exactly what has been driving Procyon to such destructive thoughts as it turns out she just wanted to restart the world. So in the end everybody made up, the kingdom is on the path to rebuilding, and the boys are back at work healing hearts wherever they are needed. A decent ending here as I had a feeling that everybody would make up rather than fight to the death. For what this show was, I enjoyed it despite having terrible production values.

Overall, the show ended up being enjoyable in spite of its low budget and production values. What this show gets right are the creative art style, daringness, and story writing that sticks to what works while not trying to force in what might not work as evidenced by having two rounds of character showcase before the big finish. Nevertheless, the inexperience by the personnel working on this project definitely shows as the animation looks cheap and the show's format was pretty much just playing it safe. In any case, it was bold and daring, and that led to an enjoyable experience, one that could have been better had the production values been improved.
