    The will of D.

Here comes a high-level spider called the Queen Taratect, which is someone the spider girl can become if she keeps on leveling up at the rate she is, and the queen is quite a formidable foe. A team of soldiers was almost completely wiped out by it as her webs are as tough as steel and require some really hot flames to burn, all while it moves very fast and strikes in a blink of an eye. It's only thanks to some teleportation magic and the soldiers protecting those two with their lives that Ronandt and Buirimus were able to escape. While that's going on, Shun now has a target on his head now that he has inherited the title of hero from his brother Julius after he was killed in the line of duty. Things are getting ever more so chaotic here as there's a lot of juggling around here, between Kumoko, Shun and his classmates, the demon lord, and the adventurers who are venturing into the dungeon.
    Re: Episode 10

    Back to the Future.

    Also: Lyrics!!!!

We start with Kumoko and her alt-brains trying to figure out the ramifications of the visit by the Bad Ass Dude, and the phone call from D. Naturally, Kumoko comes to the conclusion that there's nothing they can do about it, oh, and they've found the exit to the upper stratum of the Labyrinth.

Meanwhile, 15 years in the future, The Royal family is gathered to mourn Julius and figure out what to do next. We meet Shun/Schlain's 2 older half-brothers, Cylis, who seems like a prime candidate to get an "I'm an Asshat" tattoo on his forehead, and Leston, who seems like a nice guy.

News comes in: Half the 8 forts are fallen, one, Fort Kusorion, is completely destroyed, with the king believing that's likely where Julius was killed. All that's known is that a Queen Taratect spider appeared there. The surviving forts all took heavy losses with the exception being Fort Dazarro, under the command of Master Ronandt, who won a decisive victory. Ronandt is a super powerful mage. The Royals decide to keep Julius's death and Schlain being the new hero secret for now, Also, Schlain needs to leave the Academy.

Meanwhile at Ft. Dazarro, Ronandt is being praised for his might by one of his officers, but Ronandt blows it off by telling the story about how 15 years ago he was on a mission to subdue a monster in the Great Labyrinth that had been driving other monsters out into the word where they were causing trouble. Kill the worst monster, the lesser monsters won't leave home. They run into spider webs, webs that are very tough to burn, and then the owner appears, a ferocious, terrifying spider monster of a breed called Zoa Ele, which doesn't attack right away, but activates all sorts of skills. Ronandt is stunned by this, and even more shocked that the monster is appraising him...and then he's totally floored when he realizes all the skills the monster has when he uses appraisal on it...and then loses it when he realizes the monster has blocked his appraisal skill!

Ronandt just goes nuts, in his thirst to find out more about this amazing creature, and then the soldiers start dying. Finally Ronandt and the commander are the only two to survive long enough for Ronandt to teleport them out.

15 years later, Ronandt's point is that praising him for his great power is absurd: There are far more powerful beings out there, including the Nightmare of the Labyrinth.

Cue ED, which now have subtitles!!!!!

After which we're back to 15 years ago, where Kumoko is ticked about the humans coming in burning and trashing her home. Totally self-defense other me's, right? Right! But she's marked the survivors who fled; they'll show her the way out of the Labyrinth! Oh, and she got more XP and gets to evolve again, this time into an Ede Saine.

So, Kumoko of 15 years ago was more powerful than the most powerful human magician alive 15 years later.

The contrast of Kumoko's (and our image of her), with how the humans of the world see her is remarkable in its difference.

Also, we finally get subtitles for the OP and ED!! And it just adds to the fun.

      That really stings.

As it turns out, some lady in white killed Jun and left only one survivor from the party. And back in the dungeon, Kumoko has continued to evolve and learn some spells that are taboo. She encounters a giant cobra, but the cobra is after a much bigger enemy in the form of an earth dragon. And seeing that she just wants to get out of the dungeon, she has the skills where she can just sit back and let the humans she tagged show her the way out, but she gets attacked by a swarm of wasps. While they are pretty weak, their numbers are quite overwhelming since she's right under a nest. And then the cobra gets slaughtered by the earth dragon, meaning that the spider will have to fight that monstrosity. Things are headed for chaos here as there is some lady in white that's causing a lot of trouble, all while the spider is dealing with trouble herself as the dragon is not like anything she had faced.

        Re: Episode 11

        Past and Present.

Now that we know that what's happening with Shun/Schlain is in the present and what happens with Kumoko takes place about 15 years ago, we realize that we're following 2 narrative threads.

        The Past:

Kumoko levels up her Taboo level to 10, at which point she receives a massive information dump. Her multiple brains are still trying to work it out but there's one important thing:

        The world is doomed.

        The Present:

It's been a month since Shun left the Academy; he's practicing at home with Fei, who suggests they form a contract so she'll always be on call. Shun agrees, despite it having the ability to compel Fei to do things she doesn't want to do. She has no problem, since there's no way Shun would go crazy like that (looks like a flag, smells like a flag, tastes like a flag!). They contract, a simple ceremony to do, but very difficult to undo, and suddenly Fei is back in a large egg. Shun's appraisal tells him Fei is evolving.

        The Past:

The details are still very unclear, but Kumoko believes that the one thing that she can do to help save the world is to get stronger. Without that, there's no way she can save the world.

And to do that, she's going to need to take down the fearsome Earth Dragon, Araba. Araba traumatized Kumoko so much the first time she witnessed it, that she feels she needs to beat it to get past that trauma. If she can't get past that trauma, how can she possibly save the world, she tells her reluctant other selves. Scouting out Araba, she encounters a massive and scary cobra-like monster snake, which she's glad to avoid, only to witness Araba tear the snake apart with ease. Grinding time!

        The Present:

The soul survivor of Julius's group arrives to tell Shun about everything that went down. Hyrince, the group's tank, only survived because Julius gave him a Phoenix Feather, an artifact that brings a person back to life one time. Everything had been going well, they'd just defeated the demon army commander, when suddenly a woman all in white came forward: White hair, white clothing, white boots, who then flashed beams from her eyes. The next thing Hyrince knew was that he was coming to, presumably resurrected, and there's nothing there. The only thing he found was the scarf Julius always wore from his and Shun's mother. The only thing he can figure is that the woman in white used rot to wipe them out, turning everyone's bodies to dust. Hyrince asks and is accepted to be Shun's tank. We also learn that Yuri has become the Saint, as the Saint was also killed with Julius.

        The Past:

Kumoko is leveling up, and working on a plan. We see her use Annihilating Evil Eye, an attack with a major backlash, but one that she can heal. It uses rot to disintegrate the opponent. Coincidence that we see this after Hyrince's description, or a clue? She's marked the humans to find out how to exit the labyrinth, she's marked Araba, and she's also marked a pair of weaker earth dragons. She decides that she needs space to fight Araba, so she goes to attack the wasps she had run into before, clearing their area out and wiping out their nest. She prepares the battlefield, and prepares to do battle, knowing that Araba, with the perception level Kumoko now realizes Araba had, back when she first cowered in fear of the dragon, known that Kumoko was there, but dismissed the spider as not even being worth the waste of time to squash. Kumoko vows to make the dragon regret that.

We're now set up for a big showdown battle. Araba is level 32. Kumoko is level 26.

The fact that we have twin narratives of the past and future really upsets the applecart, in a fun way. Now when we look at the event taking place, we have to wonder to what extent Kumoko is involved, or involved at all. Elf-sensei told us one girl classmate they asked about is dead, with the strong implication being that this is Kumoko they're talking about. We learn this at a cliffhanger moment, but then learn that Kumoko survived and triumphed. But there's still lots of time for her to have died...and lots of time for her to have evolved into something more powerful, MUCH more powerful over 15 years. The Demon Lord who uses webs, now the woman in white who shoots rot beams from her eyes...clues, red herrings or what?

This is good stuff and I look forward to next week.

          Episode 12

          War of attrition.

That was quite an intense fight between the spider and the earth dragon there as Araba clearly has Kumoko outmatched. No matter what she tried, Araba just wouldn't go down. But in the end, she won by forcing Araba to drain his SP with those moves, and while Kumoko is pretty spent herself, she still has enough to survive after getting some of her legs ripped off and almost becoming a snack for the dragon. And with that, she has made it to the exit as she's out of the dungeon at long last. A very entertaining fight that was as once again, Kumoko's resourcefulness won it against an opponent that outclasses her in just about every way.

            Episode 13

Out of the dungeon, but not out of the woods.

Kumoko is finally out of the dungeon. But she's still very much in danger as the mother is none too pleased that she's able to resist her powers that control her children to stay close to her, and such resistance is only possible with her high level. So Kumoko is attacked by all her brothers and sisters, and seeing that she's starving that she cannibalizes them. And while that's going on, Shun and company are preparing for a war as the demon lord has no intention of settling things diplomatically. So while the spider is out, the dangers are just beginning as the whole place is about to become a war zone. Things sure took quite a turn there, but I knew that she wasn't going to get her way.

              Episode 14

              He's outta here.

And now, Shun has been displaced as Hugo and Cylis have framed him for murdering the king. He was about to bite the dust until he was saved by Fei, who evolved into a dragon that can carry a small party on her back. And aiding Hugo's cause is the vampire Sophia, aka Shouko Negishi, who is the first reincarnated person that Kumoko met when she was a baby outside the dungeon. That was pretty tough to see things going down the way they did as Shun is now in a tough spot with only his closest followers to lean on with word spreading around that Shun is a wanted man.

                Re: Episode 14

Waiter? I'd like a vampire with big jugs and a large helping of escalation.

There's a lot that takes place here. A LOT.

We first have the first (that we really know of), direct crossover between the past and present, as Kumoko rescues a carriage under attack. In the carriage is a noble, his wife and their child. And the child is Sophia, the reincarnation of Shouko Negishi, who we first saw scheming with Hugo. We also see that there elves who are out to steal Sophia and kill her parents...or they would've done so, except that Kumoko decided to not let her rescuing go to waste.

Back to the present, we see that Shun gets called to his Dad, the king, accompanied by his sister, Sue, who told him. Except Dad didn't call him, and then Sue fires a magic blast that leaves a nice see-through hole right in the middle of the King's forehead. Sue then calls for the guards, claiming Shun did it, with Hugo and Cylis, the older brother who in commenting on Ep. 10, proclaimed that he was a prime candidate to have "I'm an Asshat" tattooed on his forehead, have schemed together for this coup. Cylis was the heir, but the King, he claims, was planning to name shun the heir in order to keep him from the frontlines. We discover that Sue has been brainwashed and mind-controlled by Hugo, who's out for revenge against Shun and Oka-sensei. Oh, and that Sophia is the grand schemer (more later). But Oka-sensei to the rescue! But things are looking grim: Katia is also brainwashed, but Shun manages to shake her control long enough for her to kill herself, which causes Shun's powers to go berserk and resurrect Katia, also freeing her from the Hugo's mind control. Things are looking bad, as Sohia appears, tossing to Oka-sensei/Fitimos the decapitated head of her father, Potimas, the leader of the elves. Despite being ordered not to fight Oka-sensei, Sophia decides that Oka/Fitimos is going to die in an "accident." There's clearly history between the two in this world, as Oka is scared of Sophia, and Sophia clearly hates Oka.

But at the last moment, Fei arrives, having finished evolving and is now much larger and much more powerful, a dragon. Fei rescues everyone who she carries off on her back to safety.

At the end, however, we witness Sophia telepathically talking with the someone about how things went. Everything went according to plan, with the person on the other end sympathizing with "poor Yamada-kun", aka Shun. Sophia feels that suffering, like she did, will do him good, with the other person, revealed as the Demon Lord, reminding Sophia not to do anything that will upset the plan.

This episode goes all the way through the closing credits. Result: MAJOR escalation. But we see what happens to the baby Kumoko rescues, and importantly enough, further confirmation that the Demon Lord is following a plan, one that Shun seems to be a key part of, as it seems that Shun's brother the Hero was deliberately killed off so that Shun would become the new Hero, a plan that involves war between humans and demons....leaving me confused but very interested in what's going on.

                  Episode 15

                  Back to the dungeon.

Just when Kumoko thought she was free, mother has come with her children to take down her disobedient child, and not only is she freakishly strong, but she has a ton of followers. And if that wasn't enough, she knows everything about Kumoko as she had a bunch of her children stationed at her nest, while having a puppet taratect guarding the entrance to the lava field, where Kumoko is trying to escape knowing that it's not friendly towards spiders, but Kumoko has adjusted to that fiery environment. It was quite a tough battle as while Kumoko is strong, she's totally outnumbered, and that puppet is quite a dangerous foe. But she created an opening and managed to teleport to that place to get out of a jam. That was quite an intense battle there that looked like Kumoko is toast, but she once again pulled off a well-executed plan to live another day. In the meantime, Shun's party is about to enter that dungeon seeing that to take back his kingdom, he will have no choice but to venture through the labyrinth to get to the other side in order to get reinforcements.

                    Episode 16

                    Evolution's the solution.

After last week's intense episode, this one is far more laid-back for the most part as Kumoko is filled in by D as to how she came to be that way as the spider reaches full evolution. And then back in the present timeline, Fei evolves and now takes the form of a girl, while Shun and company are trying to get through the dungeon that Kumoko originated from that's heavily guarded by imperial soldiers. So they decide to take a backdoor entrance through the water where they have to elude a dangerous dragon, who is somebody that Kumoko met years ago right before she made her fateful encounter with the demon lord. Not much happening here, but nevertheless things are going to really pick up again now that Shun's party entered the dungeon, while the past timeline reaches the point when Kumoko and the Demon Lord first met.

                      Re: Episode 16

So much for that theory (or something I already knew).

So, we've been teased throughout with this possibility: The Kumoko of the past is the Demon Lord of the present.

Nope. Completely discounted as we see the ending with the Demon Lord we know arriving and blasting Kumoko, literally, to pieces.

Good thing our Spider Gal got her immortality skill at the start of the episode, heh.

So, yeah, evolution happens and we see Kumoko evolve again, this time into a unique spider monster, apparently the first of her kind. ANd she gets a call from administrator D, who fills her in on things, such as what happened to start everything off. D created a system, and there are those who oppose this system, who apparently riled up the past Hero and past Demon Lord, who breached the dimensions, causing the explosion in Kumoko's classroom. D, feeling responsible that the system she created was used to kill them all, reincarnated them all with their memories intact. D explains how Kumoko has a jump on all her classmates, who are mostly human, and therefore still infants, while Kumoko keeps leveling up.

Meanwhile in the future, the plan to go through the labyrinth hits a snag, as the guide Hyrince knows is too afraid of angering the Empire, but his dad is not, so they get their guide.

At the same time, Fei has evolved into having a girl form, one that greatly resembles her past self....except for the wings on her back. The only way to get into the labyrinth, due to the Empire's guards at the entrance is through a tunnel in the sea, leading to 2 things: Everyone in swimsuits and a fight with a water dragon.

Back to the past: Speaking of water dragons, we see Kumoko fishing, and catch a water dragon, having zero problem blowing it away. But she has a plan, and is picking off Mother's minions one at a time, such as drowning the puppet monster. It's at this point that Magic Brain 1 finally gets through to warn about the impending attack by the Demon Lord...who blasts Kumoko into pieces.

-The conversation with D is a lot of fun and very important.

-The girls in the party, even Katia who was a guy in her past life, to the puzzlement of Shun, get called to help Fei get clothing for her new girl form. Although the show's been light to touch on it, this is to help show that Katia has become comfortable in his body now being "her" body, which is to be expected after living in that body for 15+ years.

-But the big news this episode is that the leading candidate to be Kumoko in the future is NOT Kumoko in the future. We're reminded again by Oka-sensei that the girl in the class most likely to be Kumoko is dead in the future. Bad things could still happen to our spider girl...which of course, is happening now, as she's in pieces atm.
My Avatar: The lovely Mikuru Asahina from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Why do I stick with her in a world of constantly changing avatars? Because:
                      1) Her friendly, playful attitude in that picture, (despite being forced unwillingly into cosplay), reflects my own friendly, playful personality;
                      2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and
                      3) It makes it easiier for me to find my own posts in threads.

                        Episode 17

                        This place is a Nightmare.

Into the dungeon Shun's party goes, and it's no wonder why it's the most dangerous place in this world as not only are the monsters tough, but there's a disease that will cause adventurers to lose their will since light doesn't reach any point of the dungeon. That is, until the Queen Taratect tore open a hole in the roof in order to pursue Kumoko years ago. While the party could have gone the safe route, it's quite a long detour and of course, Shun is strong enough to face whatever comes his way given what is on the line, so the short and dangerous path it is where they face off against a strong dragon. But the party defeats it, and they encounter the Nightmare vestiges, but they go away seeing that they won't attack unless provoked. And then there's that hole that makes for a convenient exit seeing that they can ride Fei and no swarm of deadly hornets will stop them. Things are certainly looking up for Shun's party now that they made quick work of the world's most dangerous dungeon, but the hard part is still yet to come, all while the Demon Lord is commanding her army of deadly spiders to wreak havoc on the world. Things are certainly escalating into something big.

                          Episode 18

Caught in the web of religion.

Kumoko is finally free of the dungeon's influence having vanquished that monster and getting herself to civilization, but a different kind of danger presents itself as for the first time, she's seeing just how bad humans can get. Two religions are at each other's throats, all while there are bandits after Sophia's life as Kumoko was thrust into action to defend her. And then there's Pontimas who is aware of the reincarnations and is keeping a close watch on her, all while Ariel is about to make her move. Back in the present, Shun made it through to the other side of the dungeon, but is about to find that the other side isn't exactly helpful as he tries to reclaim his homeland. It was nice to see this episode focusing on the past more as Kumoko has really leveled up, all while she sees firsthand that humans are so easy to corrupt. Lots of sparks are flying between the humans, and a big war is about to break out.
