Manji is an immortal swordsman, who has been cursed with eternal life. He has grown tired of living with all the death he has created. He has no skills other than those of killing, thus he forms a plan to regain his mortality: he shall kill one hundred evil men for each good one he has killed. The old witch who afflicted Manji with immortality agrees to Manji’s proposition and Manji is set on his path to kill one thousand evil men. On his journey he meets a young girl, Rin, who has her own vengeance to seek against the sword school whose members slaughtered Rin’s family. Rin and Manji journey together, each hoping to find some kind of peace. In their way are many varied enemies. Rin and Manji are almost constantly under attack and must learn to live their lives, avoiding being consumed by revenge.

    Episode 1

    A double suicide solves nothing.

I can definitely see why this show is an ONA and not on TV as that opening scene is bloody and grotesque, in-league with other violent shows like Berserk and Hellsing. Nevertheless, that was some amazing storytelling there setting up Manji and Rin as they are going to be together for the long haul. Manji is immortal, but getting his body parts amputated still hurts like hell. And then they meet Sabato, who has stitched two women to himself, one of them being Rin's mother. Manji sure showed that creep not to make a young girl cry and make her think about double suicide as that's exactly what Rin was prepared to do before Manji stopped her. It's off to a nice start there as the manga is supposed to be among the G.O.A.T., but with its long length that this is something that's going to be tough to adapt as the 2008 series is proof of that. With Amazon funding this project that I have high hopes for this adaptation.

And onto the next episode as two episodes are up on premiere day.

      Episode 2

      What's lost is found.

So Rin begins her plot of revenge against those who killed her family, and her first step is to regain a sword that belonged to her father after meeting with Souri, and while she has the money to buy it back, unfortunately it's now property of Taito. And that leads to a battle between Manji and Taito, but he's quite different from the other thugs that Manji has fought against as at the very least he gave the sword back after he was beaten in a duel. Manji and Taito have established a rather interesting relationship there, all while Rin sure is starting to get stronger herself. Those two sure are getting along well seeing that they are both seeking peace of mind in extremely different ways.

So as usual, trial period rules apply, though knowing how amazing the source material is, I'm pretty sure the anime will at least do a much greater justice than the 2008 series. Of course seeing how long this series is that I can expect a ton of stuff to be cut out maintaining only the core components like how Banana Fish was adapted, or this just being the first season. In any base, I'm pretty sure I'll be on board with this show seeing that it has some of the best storytelling out there, at least the manga does.

She's not cut out to be a prostitute.

Here comes Makie, and she's a prostitute, as well as a swordsman from the Itto-ryu, and she has been struggling. She's being told to be a prostitute, but at the same time she picked up the sword. Through her battle with Manji that she realized she had been letting her life be controlled, and that she needs to take charge of it. Once again, this show is ridiculous when it comes to bloodshed, but it does an excellent job with character develops as is the case here with Makie fighting for her freedom.

          Episode 4

          Meet the killer.

Rin meets up with the guy who is behind the murder of her parents, Kagehisa, as well as the current head of the Itto-ryu, a position he acquired after his grandfather Saburo was killed by Abayama. His background is explained as he just was not on good terms with his grandfather, and it's no wonder why seeing that their mentalities are different. Saburo wanted to do things with honor, whereas Kagehisa just wants to win at all costs. So while Rin tries to kill him, she didn't stand a chance, and I'm amazed that he didn't just kill her right on the spot. Kagehisa is one of those sympathetic villains as there's definitely a lot more to him than meets the eye, so it will be interesting to see where all this goes.

            Episode 5

Opening up a can of worms.

As it turns out, there's another immortal out there in Shizuma, and he has the poison that makes an immortal mortal as it kills those worms that make regeneration possible. And in the end, Manji uses his poison against him seeing that he finally realizes the pain he has been suffering for living a long life chasing for a goal that's out of reach. He really crossed the line by kidnapping Rin and focing some poor old lady to do some of his dirty work by taking her grandchild. Anyway, it goes to show that immortality is not as great as it seems.

              Episode 6

              Hiding behind the mask.

And now, Rin meets the son of the guy who raped and killed her mother. Renzo had been living in the dark as he didn't have a clue that Araya was a killer. But he did see Manji killing him, and that was a sight that a child shouldn't have to see. Manji did quite a great acting job there to stop Renzo from going down the path of vengeance by faking his death. It's tough to be living as the son of a guy who has had such a shameful hidden past, but at least Rin did the job setting him straight.

                Episode 7

                Tastes like boar.

The time has come to name the Itto-ryu's new instructor has come, but Taito doesn't want it if it means having to put up with Kagehisa. Just as Taito bids farewell to Ren, here comes Shira to kill her. While that's going on, Rin continues to seek and kill Kagehisa, and then Shira comes by, and he's quite the trickster there telling Rin that she thought that was eating boar meat when in truth she was eating dog. It just goes to show that evil is lurking everywhere, and in this world everybody needs to watch their back.

                  Episode 8

                  Chasing after the wrong person.

Rin has a lead on Kagehisa's whereabouts, and she goes with Shira, but that was a bad lead as Manji had to save her once again. And then Shira just goes crazy raping that lady who they ended up chasing, and that was quite brutal to watch there. Shira totally lost his mind as that serves as a reminder of how dark this show is.

                    Episode 9

                    Faking her identity.

Now that Rin and Manji have been branded as criminals that going places will be quite difficult. So Rin asks a couple to pretend that she's their daughter, and it's a good thing the wife informed Rin of every detail in order to convince those guards she's somebody else. It was quite pricey seeing that Rin lost half her money, but she's gotta do what she needs to do realizing that the alternative is much worse now that she's not exactly someone who can pass by without attention.

                      Episode 10

                      Making the cut.

That was quite a brutal episode there, and that Shira is such a sickening creep. He kills Shinriji, and then goes on to rape Hyakurin, but Hyakurin showed a lot of resolve there as being an assassin herself, she had those instincts to keep a hidden blade, as well as kill that swordsman that was guarding her. Lots of bloodshed here, but it goes to show that Hyakurin is not exactly helpless, all while going to show just how awful a person Shira is and he needs to die soon. And once again, there's that hair-cutting symbolization.

                        Episode 11

                        Down the waterfall.

Manji and Magatsu run into Shira, and they team up to take him down with Manji dealing with his accompanying swordsmen and Magatsu dealing with this bastard himself. As it turns out, Magatsu's lover Ren was murdered by Shira, so he's taking out his vengeance for her death on Shira. It was quite a bloody battle as Shira turned his right arm into a weapon, but even though he was impaled, Magatsu had the strength to drag Shira over the waterfall, and then cut off his left hand to send him plummeting. That was great to see Shira finally getting what was coming to him realizing just how much of a horrible guy he is as being a lady killer. Next time, Rin wakes up right alongside Kagehisa and it will be interesting to see what comes of this now that she's meeting the man she wants dead.

                          Episode 12

Now's not the time for revenge.

Rin finally meets Kagehisa, and while she's out to get revenge on him, she's being quite hesitant about carrying it out. Of course, part of the reason is because she probably can't beat him in a fight, but the other part is that she realizes that Kagehisa is a human being. And the more she learns about Kagehisa, the more she wants to back off on her revenge. And then they get attacked, but Rin helps defend a weakened Kagehisa, all while Manji, Magatsu, and Makie arrive to help them out. Revenge isn't exactly suite for someone like her, but at least she's being talked out of it knowing full well what awaits should she go through with it.

Seeing immortality with his own eyes.

Here comes Habaki, and he makes his presence felt there slaying all those people at the banquet, and then testing out Manji's immortality to confirm that he is indeed an immortal. This has Kagehisa plotting to take him down seeing that he killed those dojo leaders of the Itto-ryu. Even though Manji is immortal, it still hurts like hell and now, he's in a bad situation there being thrown in the slammer realizing that someone wants his immortality.

                              Lending a hand by force.

That was quite painful to watch there seeing Burando cutting up Manji and using the prisoner Dewanosuke as a test subject for his immortality experiments. Even more so is when Burando nearly got his hand stuck in Manji's body when he tried a live dissection and that gave him an idea to switch hands. Looks like it might work seeing that Dewanosuke has some immortality in him, but it remains to be seen to what extent seeing that Habaki is ordering Burando to try implanting parts that are bigger in size, something that probably isn't going to end well for somebody. Nevertheless, that was painful.
