    ノー・ガンズ・ライフ

A show about people being turned into weapons through cybernetic enhancements, such as a former soldier whose head has been turned into a gigantic gun. There's quite a big conspiracy going on. Has nothing to do with No Game, No Life.

    Airs: Thursday, October 10, 2019

Ex-soldier Juuzou Inui has one question—who turned him into a cyborg and erased his memories?

After the war, cyborg soldiers known as the Extended were discharged. Juzo Inui is one of them, a man whose body was transformed, his head replaced with a giant gun! With no memory of his previous life—or who replaced his head and why—Inui now scratches out a living in the dark streets of the city as a Resolver, taking on cases involving the Extended.

When a fellow Extended showed up in Inui's office—on the run from the Security Bureau with a kidnapped child in tow and asking for help—Inui should have just thrown the guy out. But Inui's loyalty to a brother Extended makes him take the job. Keeping the child safe won't be easy, since everyone seems to want to grab him, from street punks to the megacorporation Berühren, who have sent out a special agent that knows exactly how to deal with the Extended...

    Episode 1

    Son of a gun.

Juuzo sure is badass there, and the fact that he has a gun for a head kind of puts an exclamation point on that. So it begins with Juuzo digging deep into some conspiracy Beruhren is cooking up, and what Tetsuro revealed there in the end is quite shocking. This "orphanage" ran by "nuns" is actually an experimental ground for creating humanoid weapons as the nuns are only there to carry out the dirty work. Pretty nice start there as Madhouse comes through once again with great animation, and I like the soundtrack that goes along with it. Still, it could be better, but overall it's something that I like to see. When I first saw this title, I thought it had something to do with No Game, No Life, but it's guns instead of games going on.

Like always, trial rules are in effect and it will be a couple of more episodes before I make the call.

      They aren't tools.

So that Tetsuro guy just so happens to be the shady company CEO's son. Mary is quite the mechanic there seeing that she does a much better job than anybody can as she knows full well how to fix up these cyborgs. And while Juuzo loves to smoke (which he shouldn't even though his body is mostly metal now), nothing is worth a lifetime supply of his favorite brand of cigs, especially not the life of a boy who's being used as a test subject. It will be interesting to see what the depth of this renegade project is seeing that the CEO is willing to go as far as to make his son a guinea pig.

        Episode 3

        Cutthroat company.

Beruhren has gotten really serious about getting the CEO's son back for their illegal experiments as now, they are willing to go to great lengths to recover Tetsuro, and Juuzo and Mary see firsthand why as there's an advanced weapon in his throat that causes quite a lot of damage. Next case involves a couple of girls who have been experimented on and because of their memory erasure, they are fighting for the enemy not realizing that they are just puppets in the grand scheme of things. Ende goes berserk, but Anne managed to snap her back to her senses, all while Juuzo comes to the rescue. That was some great action once again, all while Juuzo continues to try and right a lot of wrongs that the scumbags at Beruhren have committed.

          Pulling the trigger.

Any attempts at bring Ende back to herself get quickly shot down as just when Ende was backing out, those bastards put a couple of bullets in her brain to turn her into a mindless WMD. While that's happening, Tetsuro gets exposed. Tetsuro used his Harmony to help get himself and Juuzo out of a jam, but doing so fries his brain if he overuses it. That was quite the downer there that Juuzo couldn't save those two girls, but at least he has established a close relationship with Tetsuro.

So with that, the trial period has ended and this show is in for my watchlist, a decision that was made quite some time ago.

            Episode 5

            There is no escape.

It's onto the next arc where Juzo is dealing with the EMS, a security agency that keeps Extendeds in check. Juzo is discharging, and that's a huge cause for concern, and Juzo is quite the man there trying to not bring trouble to others. But things aren't exactly looking great there with Juzo's friends rounded up, all while Juzo is dealing with Kronen, who doesn't trust him, while detaining prisoner escapees. Pretty slow episode, but an important one to set things up.

              Episode 6

He's got a target on his head.

So now, Juzo is tasked with bringing Gondry back alive, and putting the pieces together based on who he killed, he's after first generation Extendeds, thus Juzo is a target. And they correctly guess that Tokisada is the next target, and they were played for fools as the assassin that tried to kill them is not Gondry as he's actually hiding as a little girl. It will be interesting to see how this relationship between Juzo and Kronen goes, but nevertheless there's a big problem at hand.

                Episode 7

                Leave no trace behind.

And here is a conflict of interest as Olivier is trying to get the truth out and as such wants Gondry captured alive, but the higher-ups want him dead to cover up their crimes. So Juzo and Kronen arrive just in the nick of time to save Tokisada, and more dirt is uncovered one of the guys Gondry allegedly killed was murdered by somebody else. And then after he was saved, Tokisada turns around and attacks Juzo and Kronen. Lots of drama going on here as it's clear that a massive cover-up is happening, but what exactly has been going on is slowly being unraveled. It's hard to say who can be trusted seeing that this megacorpration sure covered their tracks well and are out to destroy the evidence, which is Gondry in this situation.

                  Episode 8

                  He's no hero.

So Tokisada ends up not being the good guy public figure that others see him as as he used Gondry to help cover up the Norse Scott massacre that he plotted. But with the cigs Tetsuro brought, Juzo was able to bring that guy to justice with Olivier being a big help. Well, that was a rather underwhelming way to end this arc, but what happened there at the end is going to show that there's something more to this with Pepper and Seven showing up to take him out for good.

                    Episode 9

                    Scheming at the top.

Lots of shady dealings are revealed here as Wurzel is not exactly pleased that Cunningham wasn't as discreet as he could have been in his operation involving Tokisada, so he turns to Pepper and Seven, but Pepper has taken quite an interest in Juzo. While that's going on Mary has a new patient in Colt, who is connected to a terrorist group, and he pays her with a high quality part that's her brother Victor's handiwork. Pretty much, this is all setup for the next story arc as once again Juzo is going to come under attack.

                      Episode 10

                      This blows, the train doesn't.

Lots of plotting and scheming going on here as Juzo captures Saryshagan, who reveals that Colt is about to cause an explosion at Tokisada's memorial, all while the terrorist group he belongs to is set to blow up a train carrying Beruhren executives, but they caught on with the plan and instead they are blowing the train up with unsuspecting civilians and blaming the terrorist organization of murdering them. Quite the scheme that was cooked up there, but they managed to save the day, though Colt dies in the process using his last bit of strength to get the bomb to explode in the air instead of the train. While that's all well and good, he doesn't have much time to relax with Pepper in the office wanting something.

                        Episode 11

                        Their pain is his pain.

So Pepper has fallen in love with Juzo that she would do whatever it takes to make him her own, but of course it's not going to happen without getting rough. Then Seven attacks Juzo, but thanks to Tetsuro using Harmony that those two retreat, albeit coming at a heavy cost. As it turns out, Tetsuro feels the pain of the Extended he's controlling with Harmony, so he better be careful when it comes to using it. So Juzo manages to shake her off, and in the meantime, a girl living in a mansion has put in a request. One more episode to go before the show goes on break.

Episode 12 (To be continued in April)

                          Hand over that ghost.

So the first half of this show ends with a case involving Rosa living a sheltered life in the mansion after an accident that killed her parents and claimed her left leg, leading her to believe that her house is haunted. As it turns out, this ghost is just a pair of automated robotic hands and the one behind the accident is the client Danny, who is seeing that data stored inside Rosa's locket that has a ton of data on the Extendeds that could be used to bring down Beruhren. The "ghost" actually saved her life as those hands are protecting her. So to take the target off her head, Juzo takes the data for himself seeing that he knows how to use it a whole lot more than Rosa ever could. That was quite the scheme that Danny cooked up, but Juzo comes through once again.

So with that, the first half is finished, and this will continue in the spring. The show started off great, but things got off track in the second arc, and at the very least the third arc managed to keep things afloat. Hopefully things get better in the second half as it certainly could use a break.
