The fourth season of Food Wars! as the battle between Soma with his rebellious group of friends and Azami's Central army led by the majority of the Elite Ten council continues in an extremely high-stakes, winner-take-all cooking competition that will decide the future of Tohtsuki Academy. Soma's team has done well, but they face quite an uphill battle moving forward.

    Episode 1

    Ramen vs. Rare Item.

And things pick up right where they left off in the Third Plate as Soma's trio swept the first bout. But now, things get tougher with Mimasaka, Kuga, and Megishima up against three of the top four Elite Ten members. The episode primarily focuses on the match between Megishima and Rindou with their duel centered around cayenne peppers with Megishima a master ramen chef, while Rindou is cooking gator meat as she's the master of rare ingredients. And the duel that got Megishima to join the rebels is explained there as Soma pulled out all the stops as usual. It will be interesting to see what they come up with seeing how tough it is to fit cayenne peppers into their dishes. It's great to be back with this show for one last serving.

      Pay attention to detail.

And just like that, the momentum from the first bout is lost in the second bout as the Elite Ten chefs sweep. While Mimasaka gave his teammates a fighting chance, unfortunately the gap in talent was just too much to overcome. Mimasaka did put up a fight there with his signature mimicry against the master sushi chef, but it was one small detail he overlooked that made the difference as he put one too many invisible cuts. And Rindou made great use of gator meat to beat Negishima, while Kuga just had no chance against the top seat. Onto the next bout.

        Episode 3

        All part of the strategy.

The second bout is a sweep by Central as last time it shows why Rindo and Saito won, and now it shows how Tsukasa's dish is superior to Kuga's as while he made quite a formidable green tea dish, Tsukasa is showing why he's the top chef at Totsuki. Even with this defeat, the strategy is still going strong as the plan was to wear down those chefs and use that to their advantage. Next bout features Soma battling Saito with butter, Takumi against Eizan with beef, and Megumi against Momo with apples. Soma has a huge advantage with the ingredient after drawing the opponent's strength the first time seeing that it will force Saito to make something outside his specialty, while beef is perfect for Takumi's Italian style of cooking, but apples play right into Momo's hand as a dessert specialist, though Megumi's pretty good with them. And then Shinomiya shows up in the end, so it will be interesting to see what his role is in all this.

Taking a bite of the apple.

And now, an episode focused on Megumi as she learned under Shinomiya in preparation for this match. He's quite intimidating, especially since he's the one who failed her at training camp over something beyond her control. She starts off really clumsy, but she put her mind to it and tried to learn an advanced cooking technique. The end result is a flavor-filled doriyaki and while Momo's dish easily beats hers in the looks department, the taste is another matter entirely. Whether it results in a win or not remains to be seen, but no matter the result Megumi did well.

            Cheesy tactics, cheesier dish.

Megumi gave it her all, but it wasn't enough to defeat Momo. At the very least, she did get a vote, if that's any consolation. Now the focus is on the battle between Eizan and Takumi, and just like the bush league chef he is, Eizan attempts to overwhelm the judges with artichokes that messes up their taste buds so that Takumi's dish doesn't taste the way it's supposed to. But Takumi knew this was coming, so he cooked a half-shigureni, half-cheese pizza with the shigureni side made to erase the aftertaste of Eizan's dish, while using the four-cheese side to win over the judges. What Eizan did would have killed most other chefs, but not Takumi as he's well aware that he's quite a snake when it comes to cooking, so he was easy to read and Takumi knew he had to counteract that and expose him for the cheat he is.

              Episode 6

              Unlimited Butter Works.

So after Megumi lost and Takumi won, it's onto Soma's battle against Saito, and despite Saito's prowess, the them puts Soma at a huge advantage seeing that butter and sushi just don't mix. But the match was all about tapping into the other's specialty as Saito crafted a seafood rice bowl, which is what Soma specializes in, all while Soma is creating a sushi dish without the fish in the buttery rice flavored inari sushi, which would be at-home at Saito's ideal restaurant. It turns out that Soma and Saito aren't that much different as just like with Soma, Saito has that sense of adaptability few other chefs have as he crafted out his style of sushi to one-up the traditional sushi chefs. While he would have been quite a great fit for Soma's team, he felt a sense of duty to protect the weak, which is not exactly what he's doing here seeing that there's nothing weak about Central. So with that, the third bout is over, and the resistance has four chefs still alive against the three chefs still standing for Central. Next time, it looks like the battle focuses on Erina and Momo as they are the queens of their respective teams.

                Episode 7

                This queen reigns supreme.

After three bouts, the Rebels have the edge going into the endgame, and the next matchups are Isshiki vs. Tsukasa with rabbit as the main ingredient, Takumi vs. Rindo with squid, and Erina vs. Momo with brown sugar. Seeing that Momo's specialty is dessert that the theme gives her advantage. While her cute cake tower has a lot of style, Erina's dorayaki-inspired pancakes has all the substance as that dish was inspired by her teammates, and none more so than Megumi's dish she just made. Way to show her what having others can do to inspire a masterpiece, something that Momo was lacking. Just when it looked like the rebels are well on their way to victory, out of nowhere Azami somehow ends up becoming a judge, and that's bad news as he's going to be totally biased.

He'll be the judge of that.

Things took quite a turn there with Azami being a judge, and how he got Senzaemon to agree to such a move remains a mystery. But even so, he's a surprisingly fair judge seeing that he would no doubt pick Central's dish to win no matter what. Rindo won her bout fair and square as while Takumi presented a nice dish, Rindo's Peruvian-style fish dish was just on a whole different level, and Takumi even admitted that. And then comes the battle between Isshiki and Tsukasa with wild rabbit as the main ingredient, and he goes against common sense seeing that wild and Japanese cuisine generally don't mix. While he did some great work, it remains to be seen if it's enough seeing that he is up against the top chef at the academy.

                    Episode 9

                    Prepare for the final course.

As expected, Tsukasa's dish was on a whole different level and he beat Isshiki. It's down to the final bout with Soma and Erina left for the Rebels, while Tsukasa and Rindo are left for Central where instead of the usual format, it's a two-on-two bout with each preparing a gourmet appetizer and entree. So it all comes down to this as things just aren't looking promising given Soma's lack of gourmet finesse, as well as deciding who cooks what being decided by rock, paper, scissors. Things are getting quite intense here as Soma and Erina are facing long odds, but if anybody can pull through it would be them.

                      Episode 10

                      Specialty or bust.

The final battle begins with Rindo delivering an appetizer that provides quite a punch seeing that ants were used as part of the ingredients. And then Tsukasa follows it up with his best dish to date that sets the bar high. To counteract that, Soma makes an appetizer using Erina's God Tongue to fine tune his dish, and then adds his own twist without letting Erina know about out to point out the fact that nothing Erina makes by the book is going to beat Tsukasa's dish. That was quite an unexpected dish for Soma to serve, something that looks like it's fit for a caveman, but is actually a pate. Now that Soma has gone and impressed the judges with his dish, the ball is in Erina's court to make something great, though convincing Azami is going to be quite tough task seeing that Soma's dish felt more like a complete meal to him.

                        Episode 11

                        To each, their own taste.

After Soma wowed the judges with his appetizer, Azami is convinced that no matter what Erina makes she won't beat the meal Rindo and Tsukasa made seeing that this is supposed to be a full course meal. But in just ten minutes, Erina came up with a rather humble-looking dish not in the neighborhood of anything found in a gourmet textbook that packs quite a punch. As much as Azami wanted to resist, Rindo and Tsukasa were just blown away by how great Erina's first specialty dish is that takes in everything she learned from Soma. Erina's character growth is put on full display with this dish that wins it for the rebels going to show that she just needed friends to become the chef she wants to be, not the gourmet puppet that Azami had in mind. One more episode left as there's going to be one more cour of this show coming after this.

                          Episode 12 (Season 4 Finale)

                          Here's to a new Totsuki.

So with the Rebels victorious, big changes are coming to the school as Senzaemon has decided to retire with Erina succeeding him as the director of the school, all while Soma holds the first seat, but he's willing to let others challenge him for it. And then the students continue school with a much better outlook, none more so than Erina though that new student who has appeared in front of her might change that. While that's happening, Megumi is exploring the world and learning new things. Pretty much, this is all about tying loose ends and this would feel like the end of it had it not been for that final scene. I was quite sure this would have been the end of it given what just transpired and the fact that the stuff that happens afterwards is a huge step down, but nevertheless it is coming this spring.

Overall, this season continues to do just about everything that made this show great, but it's a step down from first three seasons. The cooking action, character development, and plot all continue to be top notch, but the storytelling dragged seeing that it is seemingly only about the Shokugekis this season and there's not much story involved aside from these battles. In any case, it accomplished what it needed with the way the third season ended.
