The ability to change is an asset.

After six months since watching the second season, it's finally back as it dragged its feet, but doing so with some major character development happening. Mizusawa won the team tournament, while Arata defeated the current queen to take the individual tournament with Chihaya badly hurting her finger in the process. And now, things pick up right where they left off as Chihaya is taking part in Fujisaki's summer training camp, and it's no wonder why they are always at the top as it's quite the boot camp. Chihaya's first match there is against Rion playing three times, and those two get along quite well seeing that they faced each other in the team tournament finals. The point of that match was that things aren't going to be the same when facing the same opponent again. And she gets some help with her posture. So with that, camp continues with Chihaya and Taichi squaring off. It's great to be back with this show as I was starting to lose hope that a third season wouldn't happen, but here it is and it maintains its game after a slow, but highly substantial second season.

      Episode 2

Team games are individual games, and individual games are team games.

It's back to school as summer vacation is over and Chihaya has her sights set on taking the throne from Shinobu, and she's out to dominate the Yoshino tournament in order to qualify for the challenger tournament. But unfortunately there's another roadblock as the challenger tournament just so happens to be the same week as the school field trip, which is happening a week later than usual. As much as she is willing to skip the field trip for the tournament, the teachers aren't so willing to let that happen. So it's onto Yoshino as she meets Arata and some other familiar faces there to put her newly found karuta skills to the test. Desktomu and Nishida aren't doing so well themselves seeing that they just got promoted. That was some interesting development there as Chihaya has her eyes on the prize, but life is getting in the way.

Put in the right amount of energy.

And the tournament continues as Chihaya has run into some trouble with her body being effected by her surgically-fixed finger, but she makes a few adjustments, and now she's back to being the elite player that she showed she was in the team tournament. Her opponent in the sweet 16 gave her trouble, but ultimately she won out in the end by switching her approach. But now, things are about to get tougher with Haruka up next, and she was the previous queen that Shinobu dethroned. If she has any hopes of beating Shinobu, she'll have to deal with Haruka. Should be an interesting match seeing that it will tell her if she's up for the task.

          Going on the offensive.

Haruka sure is giving Chihaya a great fight as after all, she was the queen. Harada is not doing too well himself, but he's making ground. Pretty intense match this is as Chihaya realizes just how much she needs to get better in order to stand a chance in the challenger tournament in two weeks. It will be really something to see who makes it to the Final Four. Elsewhere, Retro-kun has been promoted to Class A, so he's certainly excited.

            All worn out.

It came down to the final card, but Chihaya and Taichi won their match, all while Arata and Harada lost their's. Chihaya is so beat after that last match that she takes a snooze and Hiroshi decides to withdraw from the match seeing that he's saving his strength for the big tournament coming. As for Haruka, she's not the queen she used to be seeing that she did get married and become a mother since being dethroned, and it's a good thing she has a purpose in life beyond karuta. And while that's happening, Taichi has another intense match in the semis and he wins. Next time, it's Chihaya vs. Taichi as she's now awake, and that ought to really be something.

              Episode 6

Lined up and ready to go.

To finish off this tournament, it's a battle between fellow clubmates as Chihaya and Taichi square off. While Arata and the Fukui people need to get back with a long drive back and work the next day, they decide to stick around. Taichi uses an unorthodox arrangement for his side, one that only is effective by knowing the tendencies of the opponent. And it was an intense battle once again as while Chihaya has her eyes on the prize, Taichi is no slouch, especially seeing that if he was he wouldn't have made it this far. While the match was great, I just feel that this was not a match worthy of needing two episodes to finish off as I'm ready to move onto the next phase, especially with the class trip interfering with the queen challenger tournament.

                Episode 7

For some, there's always next year.

So after an intense match, Chihaya emerges victorious. But thanks to her opting to go on the school field trip to Kyoto instead, Chihaya decides that she'll try again next year seeing that she's not going to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to make memories with her classmates. However, Taichi decides the opposite and comes down with a fever making it an convenient excuse to skip the trip and focus on the Master challenger tournament. As it turns out, Taichi is expected to study hard to get into medical school next year, thus making it hard to squeeze in the time to play karuta, so he wants to go all-in before that happens. That doesn't sit well with Chihaya. It will be interesting to see where this all goes, as well as how Shinobu will feel about this when she sees that Chihaya is not in the tournament.

                  And I won't back down.

With Taichi going all-in this year to become the Master that the atmosphere has turned ominous. There's Sudo there quitting the tournament to follow through on a rather stupid promise, then there's the current Master telling Arata that he'll become the Master someday, just not the next one, and above all there's Taichi's mother who is trying to sabotage her son's hopes of becoming the Master in order to get him to study as if his life depended on it. Of course, she fails to realize the big picture, but it's creating quite a distraction. It will be interesting to see how things go as now, Taichi is up against the favorite to with the Master challenger tournament.

                    Luck of the draw.

Taichi and Kosaku fought to the final card, but in the end luck was on Kosaku's side as his card was called. So with Taichi's hopes of becoming a Master dashed, and perhaps for good given that he's going to be quite busy studying, that means it's Harada's time to shine, and with a bad knee that his students were allowed to pick up the cards for him that he went to show that there's a lot more than luck involved in a situation like that in beating Kosaku. Next up is the semifinal round where Harada squares off against Sudo, while Arata is facing a fellow Nagumo society player. And a hungry Shinobu is quite a disturbing sight given that her hungry stomach speaks louder than anything.

                      He can stomach it.

Shinobu's stomach grown sure was an ominous foreshadowing there as Arata got a bad stomachache. He had to go to the restroom during memorization, and again in the middle of the match and that allowed his opponent Murao to build a huge lead, and one that's practically insurmountable since Arata doesn't know which dead cards were drawn. But in a situation like this, going on the offensive is pretty much his only option, and he managed to come back and win. It makes me wonder how badly Arata would have won if his stomach didn't act up at the wrong time. And Taichi ends up going to the class trip after all as he joined the rest of the class late, something Chihaya should have thought about doing seeing that she would have missed only a day. So with that, Arata and Harada are going to play for the right to challenge Suo.

                        Episode 11

                        What does the future bring?

After what transpired with Chihaya withdrawing and Taichi losing pretty early, those two are thinking about their futures as they realize that with their mind on karuta that they haven't given any thought to their careers. In the meantime, Harada-sensei is getting ready for the East vs. West match against Arata to determine who gets to challenge Suo for the Master, while Haruka and Megumi are battling it out for the right to battle Shinobu for the Queen. And more struggles are going on as Harada-sensei is just getting old, while Haruka has her kids on her mind and Jin isn't exactly feeling well. So with that, it's onto the East-West match as the competitors put on their hakamas in what figures to be a pair of highly intense battles.

                          Older and wiser.

The East-West final is on, and the focus is on Harada-sensei as he has been through quite a lot to get to where he is. He especially doesn't take unfavorable readers well opting to forfeit a match so that reader's words don't cloud his concentration. So in this best-of-three match, the vets both beat the rookies. However, Harada opts to throw the second match seeing that he doesn't like the reader in charge and now, it all comes down to the final match to see who goes on to challenge the Master and Queen.

                            Down on his knees.

After the two veterans defeated the rookies in the first game, the ladies are playing the second game as Harada opted to forfeit the second match to rest up and get ready for the third and decisive match. The former Queen wins the second game, and Haruka will have the chance to regain the throne. But in the meantime, Chihaya and the Master hang out with Chihaya getting to know just how much of an oddball Suo is. And then comes the deciding third match as Harada taps into his memories of his youth realizing how exciting the game was for him, but after a good start Harada's knees are starting to let him down. Things sure aren't looking up for Harada-sensei as it's not easy to play when he's in pain.

                              Experience over youth.

Harada-sensei had quite a tough time in his match against Arata seeing that he crashed a couple of times because of his sore knees. But in the end he blocked out the pain just enough to win through fault on the deciding card as he backed out just enough to force Arata into a fault. That was an amazing performance there by Harada-sensei and let's hope that he beats Suo and end his bid to becoming an Eternal Master, a title he would acquire by beating Harada-sensei in the Master match. That was great to see Harada win seeing that his window of opportunity is closing, all while Arata's is just opening up. And the news gets even better in that Arata will go to college in Tokyo next year, so even more great things to look forward to as Chihaya aims to be Queen in a year. But in the meantime, things aren't looking so rosy for Shinobu as she prepares to defend her crown against Haruka.
