    Episode 1

    30 years of futility.

This show introduces the main family, as well as an energetic player who wants to be an ace pitcher, but Ichiban's skills are not fit for the mound. Pretty nice way to start things as it turns out that Souichiro and Touma are not really twins and it just so happens that they have the same birthday. And then there's Otomi, who is a nice girl and a great sister to those two. I really like how they kept the old-school animation footage from Touch seeing that this show happens three decades later, and technology back then is nothing like it is today. It's off to a promising start so far.

So like always, the trial rules apply and I will watch some more before deciding. Seeing that it's the sequel to Touch, a well-received show, and that Funimation is going as far as to put out the simuldub the same day that it has lots of potential to fill my sports fix after Run with the Wind ended so epicly.

      re: Episode 1

Having managed to see Touch myself (but some years ago, before Cross Game itself aired), I had some interest in this series to start with, but also some possible baggage. I do have to admit I'd thought the parents in Mix were the main characters of Touch, and had a few "boy, they didn't age well" thoughts before supposing the family name didn't match my recollections... Anyway, I am wondering a bit how long the characters will be coy about it before filling the audience in on the precise explanation for Souichiro and Touma, with "one of them is presumably adopted" letting minds race to areas involving Otomi associated with anime series more linked with moral panics than Mitsuru Adachi series tend to be.

        Episode 2

        All in the family.

It's no wonder why the Meisei team has been a mess ever since their Cinderella run, and it doesn't look promising that they will break through this season as they need an ace pitcher, and the manager is picking favorites as Nikaido was appointed the ace pitcher because his father is supplying the team with the equipment. And while that's happening, the family situation is explained as those three are actually stepsibling as Souichiro and Otomi are brother and sister whose surviving parents married each other after their first spouse passed away. That was some nice bonding those kids had, all while Otomi brought home a dog to join the family. Everybody is getting along, but now the same needs to be true about the baseball team as that's just not happening with the way things are at the moment.

          re: Episode 2

While the baseball side of things is a slow build, it was interesting to have an explanation for the family dynamics more "Brady Bunch" than "a last gesture to deceased friends"... which should just about eliminate one of the characters being revealed as the son of Touch's main characters, if not edgy speculation on "not blood relations!" I do recall the Cross Game manga poking at the fourth wall a bit, and one of Touch's opening themes being played "in-story" as "taken from that old baseball anime on TV" does qualify as that.

            Episode 3

            Out of position.

With the way the manager does things, it's going to take a lot of luck to make it through the tournament, but at least it got them there. Touma is playing at third base when he should be the pitcher, but because of Nikaido's influence that it's him and getting the nod. While that's happening, the siblings continue to build their bonds together, all while player's commitments are tested since this skipper is quite an intimidating guy. It will be interesting to see what comes of all this now that the Meisei Jr. High team is finally winning again, albeit by the skin of their teeth as they need to get better really soon.

              Episode 4

              Ace in a hole.

While Meisei Junior High made it to the Tokyo tournament, they are destined for a quick exit thanks to the manager's fixation on making Nikaidou their ace pitcher, and their opponent is known for shelling pitchers like him and putting Touma on the mound gives them a fighting chance. Seeing that their opponent doesn't think so highly of Meisei that they aren't starting their usual ace pitcher, and Meisei takes advantage of that. But once Nishimura arrives, as well as Nikaidou, things change for the worse. It's pretty clear that Nikaidou isn't cut out to be the ace pitcher as Souichiro says, and now Meisei is in a tough situation where the only solution is the one the manager doesn't want to go with.

So with that, the trial period is over, and it looks like I'll keep on watching, at least the next episode. Nevertheless, I'll have at least one baseball show on my watchlist for the season.

                Episode 5

                One and done.

As expected, Nikaidou has a bad outing, and even though it was an ill-advised move that everybody saw coming from a mile, the skipper still played favorites to the end putting in their "ace" pitcher to finish the game, and he gives up five runs to lose it for Meisei Jr. High. There might be other circumstances for the skipper insisting that he's their ace pitcher given what Otomi said about him moving onto high school. Nevertheless, it's clear that Touma and Souichiro are just too good to be kept in the dugout, and the ace from the school that beat them is trying to get them to transfer to their school seeing that their skipper is absolutely a joke. It will be interesting to see where all this goes as with the end of baseball season, the next episode is going to skip over into March when a new season is just on the horizon.

                  re: Episode 5

The last time I commented on this series I supposed we could conclude Touma isn't a son of Touch's main character(s), but the allusions in Sou's father's conversation with his old friend and the video-style flashback did get me wondering again. In any case, Touma and Souichiro seem to find Meisei worth sticking with for more reasons than "it's a short walk."

                    Episode 6

                    Working a miracle.

So it turns out that Nikaidou had a serious heart condition, which explains why the skipper played favorites and inserted him as an ace pitcher. He has been hiding the grim truth about him all this time, but nevertheless it's just sad that he's suffering, so this was to fulfill a dying wish. And then it fast-forwards through their 9th grade year as Souichiro and Touma made quite a name for themselves. Then there's the new Meisei High skipper Ooyama moving into the neighborhood as he is an alumnus and a former friend of their father, and Haruka figures to be a great friend to those siblings. Lots of backstories get explained here as everybody is pretty close, and that's something that needs to happen with their new teammates.

                      Episode 7

                      It all begins anew.

The siblings begin their time in high school days, and pretty much it introduces Haruka and Nan. Haruka is a gymnast, all while Nan is a fellow teammate who is quite protective of Haruka, but also afraid of bugs. They got to know each other pretty well, especially when she came over because her bathtub is not working. While Ooyama wants to make the seniors the ace, they respond by saying they want Touma to be it and they are willing to switch positions to make it happen. Pretty nice to see everybody getting along with each other, though Nan is quite a tough guy to figure out.

                        Episode 8

                        Grades don't matter in games.

And Souichiro meets one of the ace pitchers from another school in Hiroki Mita, whose sister Arisa is Otomi's classmate. There, he throws down the gauntlet and has Meisei playing against his school Toushou in a practice game. Hiroki is unhittable, all while the starting pitcher Takeshita was terrible, and while Takanoka was better, he still gave up a run. But once Touma took the mound, he showed what he was made of. Those Mita siblings just come off as jerks, and while it looks like the game is not going their way, at least Touma is backing up his reputation.

                          An imperfect perfect game.

Hiroki completes the perfect game just to rub it into Meisei there, but not even that fazed the team. Arisa isn't much better as she also acts like a big jerk, but at least Touma and Souichiro show those two that they are elite material, and it serves as great motivation to get back at them when the games count.
