Hitori Bocchi suffers from extreme social anxiety, she's not good at talking to people, takes pretty extreme actions, is surprisingly adept at avoiding people, her legs cramp when she overexerts herself, gets full of herself when alone, will vomit when exposed to extreme tension and often comes up with plans. Now she is entering middle school and her only friend, Yawara Kai, is attending a different school. This leaves Bocchi alone, surrounded by new classmates with whom she must make friends before Kai will talk to her again.

    Episode 1

Making friends, one classmate at at time.

Bocchi is in quite a predicament there as her only friend is off to a different school with an ultimatum to befriend everybody in her new class if she ever wants to see Kai ever again. And that means becoming friends with 28 others, a daunting proposition. But it didn't take long to make her first friend in Nako as she's a very helpful girl who tries to set Bocchi straight as she's overthinking a lot of things, like bowing, texting, and even asking the question about becoming friends. This feels like Watamote without the dark elements here as Bocchi is just trying to make it through the day.

So as usual, the trial period rules apply, and a decision is made after a few more episodes.

Kai means well, but at the same time the bar she's given Bocchi to pass is pretty high. Granted that might be the point. Still the result is we get to see Bocchi come up with amusing ways around it. Also I'm already shipping her with Nako. Speaking of Nako. Forget the challenge of Bocchi making a class of friends, the real challenge might be Nako surviving Bocchi.

Unfortunately, hangers are not in fashion.

Next person to befriend Bocchi is the VP, Aru as she has lived a life full of misfortune. But that makes her a perfect friend for Bocchi seeing that she's also down on her luck. And seeing her wearing that hanger on her back is pretty funny. And with that, two down, 26 left to go as she's friends with a cute girl so desperate to reverse her fortunes, and only had partial success as she ran for president, but only got the VP position.

          Episode 3

          Time to get serious.

No new friends are made here, but Bocchi does strengthen her friendship with Nako and Aru and now all three are calling each other on a first name basis. Pretty amusing to see Bocchi putting on the bear costume when she gets serious, and Nako is quite confused. And Aru continues to be so unfortunate that it's cute as she got called in to a tennis practice, and she's not exactly enjoying it. Pretty fun stuff all-around.

            Episode 4

            There are no ninjas here.

Here comes Sotoka, and she has been looking up to Bocchi because of her stealth moves to avoid being noticed, and she's quite a fan of ninja flicks. So she ends up becoming an "apprentice" to Bocchi not realizing that there's no ninja jutsus or what not involved. As it turns out, Sotoka had been out of the country for so long, so like Bocchi she entered school without any friends, but at least she's much more willing to make friends than Bocchi. Pretty nice way to introduce Sotoka there.

So with that, the trial period is over, and this show has just about solidified its spot on my season watchlist.

              Episode 5

              Down on her luck.

Here is an episode focused on Aru and her streak of bad luck. First of all, she ends up having to use her elementary school backpack after her regular backpack gets messed up. And if that wasn't enough, she's answering the wrong questions. She's taking this act even further by dressing up as an elementary school student posing as her imaginary sister Mieru. While Hana was fooled, not so much the rest of the class. And then she plays tennis with Nako, but despite being in the club, she's way off her game as it turns out that she hasn't been practicing lately. So it's back to attending the club. That was great to see Aru acting all unlucky and everything as it's cute to see that happening. Next time, it looks like these girls are getting into senryus much like a certain other girl is.

                Re: Episode 4

I think this episode was decent in warming up to Bocchi's character more than the first few episodes. She's been on about her unfortunate self, but here we get to see her express some empathy for someone else in a rather heartwarming manner.

And I guess Bocchi's issues don't seems as bad when it feels like the teacher is even more messed up. Her fright clouding any attempts to communicate and understand Nako makes me feel a little sad for Nako, the best girl of the girl bunch so far. I really hope there is some development there at some point as it would be an unfortunate gag to keep running too long.

I really love how unique the minor classmates looks with their hairstyles and all. I guess with the ultimate goal of the series, they theoretically all should have their time in the spotlight, though I'd assume with the manga. Nothing they can get to in the course of a one-cour anime series.

Aru makes for a great comedy duo with Nako.

                    Episode 6

                    Make studying fun again.

Bocchi may be socially inept, but her studying is another thing entirely as she's good at that, a far cry from Nako as she just bombed her exam and needs to pass her make-up exam. So the solution is to make it fun again, and she passes her make-up this time around. Bocchi's attempt at sharing her haiku was pretty funny, but after everything that happened, they can laugh if off. And the new ending (which is likely a one-time deal) is an extension of that wahaha they said there at the end. Pretty nice to see everybody getting along so well and pulling each other up in a time of need.

So Sensei does seem to have a sweet end goal in mind as far as Nako goes. But she just seems to be going backwards as far as her progress goes, now getting scared of even more students.

                        Episode 7

                        We meet again.

It's summer, and school is out. Bocchi and friends start things off by going to the pool where Sotoka thinks she can walk on water, but obviously that's not possible in this setting. And then they go out for karaoke where Bocchi happens to run into an old friend of her's, and while they acknowledged that they met, they both end up crying after getting away from each other. Things got emotional there at the end, but Bocchi still has a long way to go, all while Kai herself needs to pull herself together in light of this.

                          Episode 8

Friendship, or lack thereof, is strength.

Next girl for Bocchi to become friends with is Kurai, the girl who is quite a strict, stuck-up girl who is living by the rules that friendship is for the weak. She shows just how tough she thinks she is pointing out uniform violations and stuff. Bocchi first met her when Kurai loaned a bow to her, and she's giving it back. Of course, the way Bocchi tries to approach the return was all wrong, but at least she's giving it her all in trying to make her a friend. It will be interesting to see just what exactly Kurai's deal is seeing that she became that way due to something.

Kurai's "I don't need friends becauses friends make you weak" made me check the watch I don't have in order to count the time for it to take a magical girl to friendship her to death.

Sotoka needs to stop having her image of Bocchi block her view of the real Bocchi. As well as accept the idea a person can be many things. In fact only being one thing is actually odder if you ask me.

                              Worry over curry.

It's time for cooking class, and as expected, Bocchi doesn't do too well when she's cooking with others. She whips up some cream instead of pancake batter, but at least she still does something productive there. And then Kurai decides to join the circle of friends, though not exactly as a friend seeing that she sees Bocchi as a rival before anything else. Though, that curry-making exercise for an outdoor class did change her perspective on things a little there. That was pretty amusing to see Bocchi reacting in an activity like this.
