At Grace Field House, life couldn't be better for the orphans! Though they have no parents, together with the other kids and a kind "Mama" who cares for them, they form one big, happy family. No child is ever overlooked, especially since they are all adopted by the age of 12. Their daily lives involve rigorous tests, but afterwards, they are allowed to play outside.

There is only one rule they must obey: do not leave the orphanage. But one day, two top-scoring orphans, Emma and Norman, venture past the gate and unearth the harrowing secret behind their entire existence. Utilizing their quick-wittedness, the children must work together to somehow change their predetermined fate.

    Episode 1

    Food for thought.

Just when it looked like the kids were living in heaven, that place turns out to be a hell as the only thing that awaits these kids is death. Norman, Ray, and Emma all found that out by accident when they were trying to give Conny her plushie that she left behind and had to hide from the demons to make it back and let everybody else know what really happens when they leave. Quite a tremendous way to open things up and I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out now that the big truth the mistress of the orphanage was trying so hard to hide from these kids.

      Re: Episode 1

It really kills me that these threads don't have any discussion anymore. This would be such a great show for it. I knew I'd love it from the manga, which I've been reading every week since it started, but I still couldn't have anticipated such an incredible adaptation. Literally perfect in every way, even more than I would've dreamed in an ideal world. If they can keep up this level of quality, we'll have one of the best anime of the year starting right at the beginning.

Not all are in this together.

Now that the truth is out, Norman and Emma are trying to figure out a plan of escape with everybody. However, Ray isn't exactly on-board as he feels that all those other children will slow everybody down and just wants the three of them to be the ones who escape. Not to mention, the kids have tracking devices on them, a fact that they learned when Mom found one of the lost kids so quickly. And escaping is now even more difficult with Krone's arrival. These kids sure are in a tight spot now, but it sure beats not knowing that after working and studying so hard that they end up being dinner to those demons in the end. This show just continues to be amazing.

          Episode 3

          Think like the enemy.

Now that Krone has arrived, escaping this demon food farm disguised as an orphanage is going to be tougher than ever as she's quite the athletic freak as she showed during that game of hide and seek. Even so, her intelligence is not at Norman's or Ray's level. And while Isabella is aware that those three know the secret, she's keeping it a secret from everybody except Krone. The drama continues to build here as knowing is one thing, but getting out of this situation is going to take everything they got, starting with finding the tracking device that happens to be in the backside of everybody's ears, and thinking about how to get it out without Isabella knowing about it. This show just continues to deliver at a high level.

            Re: Episode 3

This show is really enjoyable. I love seeing how the kids are trying to figure out how to escape and methodically and thoroughly planning it out. Now that they know Mom and Sister know something is up, it is also fun watching their battle of wits.

The kid's education is not shown, so it's hard to judge whether the maturity and intelligence shown by our three heroes is justified. Seeing 12 year olds Norman and Ray realizing that Isabella and Krone will likely have to be eliminated to increase the chances of the escape being successful brings home the maturity and level-headed thinking these kids will need to survive.

One thing I do wonder about is rate of harvest for the farm. There are only 20-25 kids there, and they don't take that often, so why such a low rate Do the demons not need to eat much or are their numbers very low? Maybe only the nobility gets to eat kids. We don't know anything about the world as a whole. Have the demons taken over, or are the "plants" providing food for a small number of demons hiding in the general population? Ah, well, hopefully fodder for future plot development.

              Episode 4

              Who can be trusted?

So it turns out that Krone doesn't exactly trust Isabella and is hoping to one day take her position by force, and Gilda is a spy for Isabella, a deal that was made when those three tell the other kids that something really awful happens when the kids get "adopted" and leave this orphanage. That was a nice way to cover up the real truth while letting everybody know that getting "adopted" is a bad thing, saying that they all get taken in by bad people. Anyway, something is certainly amiss about Gilda as while she is working for Isabella, she's doing so reluctantly. It will be interesting to see what those kids do now that Emma is aware that Gilda has been in cahoots with Isabella and Krone, all while winter is approaching.

                Re: Episode 4

I love the final exchange between Norman and Ray. "So Don's the traitor." "So you're the traitor, Ray." It's good enough to have these genius kids outwitting the adults, but seeing who comes out on top when the genius kids have to outwit each other has an even more fascinating twist to it.

Norman has definitely proven up to this point, and especially in this episode, that his brilliance extends to a level even beyond the others, which is an important asset to have, since he's also more levelheaded than Emma, more caring than Ray, and a master at the all-important game of tag that they need to perfect to escape.

But Ray as a potential conflict could still be more threatening than they could've imagined. He's dangerously capable and the kids already have the deck stacked against them.

At least Emma gets to know that Gilda is innocent, and a loyal enough friend to keep up her facade against Krone's psychotic Disney villain interrogation. She deserves that smile.

Wish I could speculate, but I do everything that happens, after all...

                  Episode 5

                  Know thy enemy.

It turns out that Norman's intuition was right in that Ray had been working in cahoots with Isabella. But it also turns out that Ray is a double agent in this as he's doing this so that he can escape, and now he's using that knowledge to help everybody else escape. The drama just keeps on building as the kids continue to learn more about the situation. Don and Gilda infiltrate Isabella's room hoping to find out what's in that secret room, but somebody is about to enter the room, and everything could go down the tubes if Isabella is the one entering. That's something for next week as it could be anybody, but it's probably Ray seeing that the kids need a key, and Ray knows where it is.

                    Episode 6

                    Getting out of here together.

So that was just Phil who entered the room as he was finding a place to hide in a game of hide and seek. So Don and Gilda have a stunning discovery in that all of the toys belonging to the "adopted" children are found in the secret room, as well as a communications device. So they demand to learn the truth about demons and farm, and after hearing them out, they decide that they are going to escape Emma and company, all while Ray continues to try and deceive Isabella. But things take a turn when out of nowhere Krone jumps out and for some reason wants in on this whole escape plan. Lots of drama here as this continues to be a well-played chess game between the kids and Isabella.

                      Episode 7

The enemy of an enemy is a friend.

As it turns out, Krone used to be in the orphanage, and she managed to survive and make it to adulthood. But above all, she just doesn't trust Isabella, so she's joining the kids in their cause to ruin Isabella's reputation. It's easy to see why Emma wouldn't trust her, but it looks like her cause is legitimate. And once again, the episode ends with a cliffhanger, this time it's being the contents written in that letter Isabella sent Krone at the end. Krone is proving to be quite a valuable ally in this as she experienced hell long before these kids, and the more they know, the better chances they have of making it out alive. But it looks like Isabella has caught on, at least as far as Krone's plotting and scheming goes.

                        Episode 8

                        Break a leg.

And now, everything that has built up is starting to deliver its blow as Isabella has made her move. She got rid of Krone by sending her a letter that says she's promoted to a Mom, but doing so in another orphanage when in truth it was a death sentence to eliminate a traitor. And then she kicks Ray to the curb and locks him inside until Don comes to the rescue. And now, she breaks Emma's leg after snuffing out their escape plan as she tries to sweet-talk the kids into staying by saying how dangerous the outside world is. Isabella has really done it now, and once more another cliffhanger ending as this time it's Norman set to be shipped out. Nevertheless, it's sad to see Krone go out as she just wanted to live, and she got played for a fool.

                          Episode 9

There's a huge gap between life and death.

And this chess match continues with Isabella has made her move in confiscating the rope, breaking Emma's leg, and scheduling Norman for shipping. But none of that compares to the biggest game changer yet as Norman's shipment led Ray to come up with a plan for Norman to escape alone when he's scheduled to be shipped out. But when Norman makes it to the top of the wall, he sees a huge pit right across the wall. So that throws a lot of things out the window. The drama just keeps on building up here as now the kids are in an even more impossible situation.

                              Time to leave the house.

And just like that, Norman has been shipped out after finding out that it would be impossible to escape with the plan they concocted. Emma was just totally losing it there, and it was quite a depressing sight there to see Emma so downtrodden after everything she had worked for just went up in smoke like that. Norman better have a plan since he knows full well that being shipped off is a death sentence. In the meantime, Ray's turn is coming up as months pass.
