    Episode 1

    He and his cat.

Subaru sure is living a stressful life as a novelist and as if tight deadlines weren't bad enough, he has to put up with a cat that he found at his parents' grave. And this kitty isn't exactly any run-of-the-mill stray as he's pretty smart and absolutely hates the sight of food being wasted even if it is something not meant for human consumption. While the first half didn't have much to offer, the second half was great as those two are building quite a relationship. It's off to a nice start there.

So like always, trial rules apply in deciding what shows make the cut.

      Haru means food?

And thus, the cat's name is Haru after the way it reacted to hearing it after Subaru went through a bunch of names as according to the cat, it means food and not spring. Pretty amusing to see things from the cat's perspective there at the end sitting on Subaru's laptop because it's warm until the computer went on sleep mode, leading him to go out and get some cat food seeing that Subaru is none too pleased about having to interact with strangers. Subaru sure has a lot to learn about cats, but they definitely are getting the most important part down.

        Episode 3

        Everybody needs somebody sometime.

That was just emotional as it's about Subaru's parents. They loved to travel, but Subaru would rather stay at home, and it's because of his stay-at-home attitude that he's still alive as his parents died in a tour bus accident. Ever since then, he has been a workaholic to the extreme, but then Haru came along and with so many frequent distractions that they were all to send him a message that he just doesn't realize that he has a huge void in his well-being, something that Haru would go a long way to fill. And with that, he finally accepts Haru into his life. That was just filled with feels as now Subaru sees Haru as emotional support that he didn't realize he needed and not a freeloader who just barged into his life to be a nuisance.

So with that, this show has cemented its place on my watchlist as this episode is easily one of the best episodes of the young season.

          Episode 4

          Go see the doctor.

Now that Subaru has fully accepted Haru into his family, Kawase points out that he needs to get her a collar, which means another trip to the pet store, and the shop owner tells him that Haru needs to get checked out at the vet. It was pretty scary for Haru to go through all that, but it was necessary to do. And that interaction between Haru and the dog was pretty amusing as they appeared to be hostile, but they were just trying to get to know each other seeing that the dog lives in the next house over. And the shop owner also happens to live in the neighborhood as well going to show that Subaru has plenty of help around him to make sure that Haru lives a happy life. So after an emotional episode last time, this one has a much different feel going to show that Subaru is learning how to be a responsible pet owner. And that part with the collar was pretty amusing there at the end seeing that she loves the bell, but it was too noisy.

            Episode 5

            That scent seems familiar.

After meeting her inside the shop, Nana and Subaru get to really know each other. And it turns out that they have a lot more in common than they think as she's the owner of Haru's sibling Hachi. Subaru ought to know better than to feed her that much food, but of course seeing that it was hard to come by as a stray that she would chow down and still be hungry. But Nana's bottle really came through there. Pretty cute to see everything going down once again, especially with Haru and Hachi getting along. Next time it's Nana's husband, or maybe brother. But whoever that guys is, he's not exactly pleased to see Subaru in her apartment.

              Episode 6

              All in the family.

So it turns out that he guy Yugo is Nana's little brother and he happens to be a huge fan of Subaru's novels. That was quite a sad backstory for Haru having to fend for her family that was in dire need of food. While Haru and three of her siblings end up getting adopted, the other died as that cat was killed by crows. At the very least most of Haru's family are with loving owners who will take care of them, but that comes at the cost of never seeing them again as the owners just aren't aware that Haru has a family of cats. That just goes to show that life is quite tough as a stray as food is scarce and there are a lot of dangers out there. But these cats were able to last long enough thanks to Tora and Kuro, two other strays who taught them survival instincts.

                Episode 7

                Kids will be kids.

Yet another case of Subaru being forced out of his comfort zone as Hiroto comes barging in with his siblings as his parents are out and about. Those kids sure are having a great time with Haru, and it's a good thing she was taught to protect the small ones seeing that they were being a bit too rough on her. Pretty cute episode that was seeing the kids over, and even the girl she was named after also made a visit as her mother works at a restaurant, so it's no wonder why Haru the girl fed the cat back during her days as a stray. While it was overwhelming, it did get Subaru to become a bit more sociable, starting with the signing event that he initially refused to do.

                  Episode 8

                  The house is not empty.

This episode is mostly about Subaru's past as it turns out that Hiroto is a neighbor that moved in while he was a kid. So it's no wonder why he visits so frequently. And then seeing Haru and Hiroto making a mess of things was pretty funny. It all started off with Haru wanting to give Subaru some food, and while trying to retrieve a can of food that had rolled away, she ends up getting stepped on by Hiroto, who dropped the groceries. Pretty nice background story there, and it doesn't hurt that Haru does something amusing.

                    Episode 9

                    Experiencing something new.

This episode structures things differently in that it starts off with Haru's perspective, then goes on to show things from Subaru's. He's now out and about having changed his mind to hold a signing event, and he gets to meet his readers, who are quite passionate about his novels. Both he and Haru aren't used to this kind of new environment as Haru goes around causing a mess at the house being alone for a long time since Subaru adopted her, all while Subaru is not exactly feeling right about meeting other people. But in the end, he got to experience the thrill of meeting his fans, and among them is Nana who came on Yugo's behalf. Pretty nice change-up that was going to show that Subaru is slowly stepping out and experiencing the world for what it is.

                      Episode 10

                      New food for thought.

Subaru continues to grow his character and reluctantly try out new things and later learning how great an experience it is. This time, it's cooking as he has never done it before as Haru, the chef's daughter, comes over and cooks for Subaru, and she's great at it as to be expected. But then she leaves behind the recipe for the meal she had cooked for the cat, and Subaru is determined to make it himself. That means going out to the grocery store and getting overwhelmed by those clerks, but he ran into Hiroto, who helped him tell the clerks that he doesn't need all that stuff, and then after struggling he finally made that meal for Haru. Subaru continues to learn new things going to show that there's a lot of things to try that he might like, but his hermit lifestyle is making it seem like a bigger deal than it really is.

                        Episode 11

                        Get out and about.

Subaru decides to take a trip out to Tokushima after seeing that one of the flower boxes is empty, and that was intended to be filled with a plant from a place his parents were going to before the accident. So in preparation, he leaves his cat behind with a lot of food seeing that she's not too thrilled about going to a pet hotel. So he makes the trip and enjoys the scenery, and seeing that he's out of ideas for his next novel that it's a good time to get out. But then a storm rolls in that delays his return, and seeing that he had planned to be away only for a day that poor Haru is not feeling all that great. One more episode left as now Haru needs to hold out until Subaru can return. That was yet another huge boost to Subaru's development, and something good is bound to come out of it seeing that writer's block has struck.

                          Episode 12 (Finale)

No storm will keep them apart.

So it ends with Subaru rushing back home braving the storm on a bullet train, but things just go from bad to worse when Haru escapes the house to look for Subaru when she should have known better. Thanks to strong winds, the door Hiroto opened wouldn't shut allowing the cat out. And after a frantic search involving Hiroto, Kawase, Nana, and Yugo, they finally found each other with the cat about to be washed away by the stream. Seeing that it just wouldn't be an ending without big drama that something like this had to happen In any case, Subaru's character growth has been amazing throughout the show as now he's more willing to get out and about after starting the show so reluctant to do things, all while the cat provides some amusing commentary about how she sees things.

Overall, this show does a great job with the slice of life aspect and character growth as a lot of it happened throughout the show. This show had a pretty simple plot structure, and it did just about everything right towards that goal. That said, it wasn't perfect as the show had a tough time settling in at the beginning, all while the supporting characters could have gotten more attention than they did, and some of the humor and stuff got repetitive. But nevertheless, this show is definitely worthwhile as it does an excellent and efficient job at character development.
