    Episode 15

This is what hell really is.

That was quite a brutal episode there as Sabame is no different from Daigo. As it turns out, the villagers did kill the children and the nun, and then burned the temple as they dumped oil and a knocked over candle ignited the flames. Hyakkimaru was well aware that something was amiss about Sabame, all while Dororo stumbled upon the village's darkest secret underneath the rice storehouse where she was almost eaten by those monsters, but that big baby saved her. That led to Dororo burning the village, but that was something she should have thought about first as even those those villagers did bad things, they are still people. And as such, they are going their separate ways, which was stupid seeing that Dororo is all brains and no brawn and is being pursued by people wanting the map on her back.

      Shark attack.

And now, Dororo is in quite a tough situation there having been kidnapped by Itachi's band of bandits as they know that she holds the map to the treasure seeing that they already are tipped off by it. As it turns out, it's in a place they need to cross, but standing in their way is Shiranui, a one-armed man who has raised a couple of sharks to be his pets, and he uses them to eat the villagers and others who dare try to steal the treasure. Dororo convinced Itachi to never give up, but that ended up backfiring as they use those words to force her to cough up the secret map on her back that was discovered by chance. Dororo sure is in a bad situation now that the bandits have the map, all while Shiranui is just looking miserable after one of his sharks was killed. Both Itachi and Shiranui both are up to no good, and now Dororo is in a tough situation after all that.

        Episode 17

        Making his body his own.

And now, the scene shifts to Hyakkimaru as he meets up with the doctor for the first time since embarking on this journey with Dororo, and he's slowly gaining his body back all while telling the truth about why he really lost his body. While the doctor insists that Hyakkimaru put a stop to demon slaying, Hyakkimaru is determined to see things through to the end, and he shows that as he saves the doctor from those demons that just keep on spawning from the tree. So after all this, everybody's motives are clear now as Dororo is trying to stop Itachi, or anybody else for that matter, from taking the treasure, Hyakkimaru is going back to Dororo and continuing to slay demons, and Tahomaru has chosen his land over his brother and will try and stop him from killing any more demons. It will be interesting to see what comes of all this as now everybody is gathering at one place where a big battle is about to break out.

          Episode 18

          From hunters to hunted.

Lots of fighting going on here as the situation quickly changed once Hyakkimaru and Tahomaru showed up. First, Hyakkimaru kills Jiromaru to get his left leg back as that shark is actually a demon. Then Tahomaru's army shows up and attacks Itachi's bandit gang that's already decimated after falling for all the traps set. So Itachi and Dororo decide to help each other survive Tahomaru's attack, but Itachi was shot and all he wants now is just to see the treasure before he dies, and in the midst of all this chaos, they find the treasure. Just when things were looking bad, Shiranui blows up the cliff and lots of soldiers were killed in the landslide, so Tahomaru retreats, while Hyogo is wounded. In the end, Hyakkimaru tells Dororo to leave the treasure alone. Pretty chaotic that all was, and it got Itachi to realize something more important than the treasure as at the very least he died gracefully, all while Shiranui and a bunch of Tahomaru's soldiers are dead. It will be interesting to see where things go from here as Hyakkimaru is being hunted by Tahomaru despite thinking highly of him, all while Dororo finds the treasure and just leaves it.

            Episode 19

Who wants to marry a swordsmith's daughter?

After a hectic episode, this one is pretty laid-back as there are no demons to slay this time around, just a troublemaker ghoul that needs to be put back in his place. Hyakkimaru and Okowa sure would have made a great couple, but marriage just isn't what Hyakkimaru wants or even knows about, and those feelings were not genuine as it was all the doing of some mischievous ghoul. So after all that, Hyakkimaru's blades are fixed up by a master swordsmith, and it's onto the next destination. Pretty nice way to follow up that episode going to show that they needed to step back and prepare for the final confrontation.

              Episode 20

              Becoming one with the demon.

The situation has become dire for Daigo as the deal with the demons is off, all while Hyakkimaru isn't getting any more body parts back by slaying demons. Saburota ended up siding with the demon after his mother was killed wanting others to experience the hell he went through, which was just not the right thing to do as he ends up being devoured and taking control of it before Hyakkimaru put that guy in his place. And Biwa has come back just when Dororo was left to drown with her arm stuck under a rock to save her. The final battle is coming as now Hyakkimaru is going after Daigo.

                Episode 21

                Don't call him a demon.

The time has come for Tahomaru to settle the score with Hyakkimaru, all while the Daigo clan is preparing for war against the Asakura clan. How Tahomaru met his two retainers is explained as Hyogo and Mutsu were the only two survivors from a village plagued by famine, and they were raised to be his retainers. So in the end, the battle ends neither brother being killed thanks to another one of Daigo's generals intervening and sending Hyakkimaru down the cliff, all while he kidnaps Dororo. It's a pretty tough world to live in seeing that Hyakkimaru just wants to be human, while Tahomaru just wants the land to survive, but he crossed the line when he called Hyakkimaru a demon, which is why he won't back down despite Dororo warning him about that.

                  Episode 22

                  Mama knows best.

As the Daigo clan prepares for war with the Asakura clan, Oku helps Dororo break out of prison as she wants to see her son one more time. While that is happening, Mutsu, who is not looking too good, decides to become the sacrifice in place of Hyakkimaru only to be denied as her life won't suffice. And Hyakkimaru is on a rampage with that Rapidash helping him out. And then comes the final confrontation between brothers as Tahomaru has been possessed by the demon. That was some nice focus on Oku there as she has had it rough ever since the decision to sacrifice Hyakkimaru was made, all while she nearly killed herself at the midway point, but here she is ready to make things right in her own way. Nevertheless, the stage is set for the final battle to go down, first a battle between brothers, and then a three-way battle between Hyakkimaru and the two clans.

                    Episode 23

Those are not his eyes, his arms.

As it turns out, Hyakkimaru is still alive thanks to the 12th demon failing to eat him. So Hyakkimaru fights Tahomaru, who has his eyes, as well as Mutsu and Hyogo, who has his arms. That Rapidash kills the retainers, and it was quite painful to watch. With his arms back, he's having a hard time fighting seeing that he doesn't know how to use a sword, but the longer reach gave him an advantage. And what Tahomaru said pretty much sums things up about how twisted the Daigo family has become when Hyakkimaru's arms and eyes are Daigo's and not his. One more episode left to go as things are literally heating up like never before with the castle gone ablaze in this fight.

                      Episode 24 (Finale)

                      A human for life.

So it ends with Tahomaru finally wising up as he gave Hyakkimaru his eyes back just before the demon takes full control of him, and Hyakkimaru slays that demon to put an end to all this. Oku gets her moment with a fully human Hyakkimaru and one last moment with Tahomaru just before the castle burns to the ground that kills those two and the doctor. So Dororo and Hyakkimaru make it out and live on with Biwamaru as their guardian, and Hyakkimaru shows just how much he has grown during his final confrontation with his father doing the human thing and not kill him. Pretty nice finish to this story and while it was bittersweet, Dororo and Hyakkimaru accomplished what they set out to do.

Overall, this show has been an amazing adventure that does a great job with character development and building relationships between the two leads. While the storytelling was strong despite the possibility of easily falling into the whole monster-of-the-week formula, it always kept the main storyline in perspective. Just about the only problems this show have are the inconsistent animation quality and the slow-moving pace that sometimes occurred. In all, it's a great way to honor Osamu Tezuka's legacy with this 50th anniversary tribute.
