There's no such thing as truth.

It's hard to believe that Waver used to be quite a naive boy back in Fate/Zero, but now he has become a man who means business, and Iskandar is a big reason for this transformation as he's much more aggressive and demanding now than back then. So it begins with a lecture to a bunch of Lords who are just in it for themselves, a black cat getting roadkilled, and a car chase to apprehend the perpetrator. Pretty much this episode just sets things up and gives a taste of what to expect for the upcoming TV series. Knowing what this manga is all about, it's probably going to be a case-of-the-week type of deal, but I'll find out for sure come July.

      Second in command.

This episode is pretty much all about Waver's background since the events of Fate/Zero and how he became Lord El-Melloi II. I like how this episode connects the events of Fate/Zero to this as Kayneth's death really hit Reines hard, and even though Waver himself didn't kill him (it was actually Maiya who did under Kiritsugu's orders and not Saber as Waver thought), he was still part of the war. But what really pushed him was his trip to the Babylonian ruins to get a relic of Iskandar where he was thrown in the slammer, and then he meets Melvin, who helps finance his tuition to becoming an El-Melloi. And then he accepts the offer from Reines as atonement for what happened with her brother, adding the II seeing how big a burden the name is. That was pretty interesting to see what became of Waver, who was certainly one of the more interesting characters in Fate/Zero. So with that, it's onto the cases.

Like always, trial rules apply, and seeing that this was just background that the next episodes will really tell me which direction things are headed.

Nothing last forever, not even the stars.

El-Melloi's first case involves investigating the death of the head of the Fargo household inside his family's mansion. But as it turns out Ernesto wasn't murdered as it is him transferring his soul and performing a forbidden ritual to obtain immortality. Any other detective would have just written it off as a cold case, but not El-Melloi as he saw through all that smokescreen to realize that it was Ernesto himself that was up to no good. And then Gray took care of whatever that no-good father of Mary's was in. That sure was an entertaining mystery there, and what El-Melloi says holds a lot of truth, all while Gray is such a badass. But something's definitely amiss about her as she looks just like Saber with the hood down.

          A shocking discovery.

The next case involves a broken power grid as some guy named Gurdoa swiped a lot of electricity to power his army of oversized electric rodents to carry out his plan as he's someone who values the Earth than lives. He hid in the sewers, but then Gray followed the rats to his lair, and then El-Melloi came bursting onto the scene to short-circuit his plan. He might have gotten away with this Jack the Ripper act back during his time, but not today as there's just too much information out there, and someone who is quite proficient in deductive reasoning like El-Melloi is can put the pieces together to snuff him out. Really great to see what El-Melloi is capable of doing once again. And then there's Luvia, and she's exactly who I remember her to be from the Fate/Illya series.

            Lightning striking again.

And now, a big case seeing that it's going to take at least two episodes to close as there's something suspicious going on at a magic workshop, all while thunderstorms have been usually active. And it's great to see Shishigou make an appearance here of Fate/Apocrypha fame. There was lots of finger pointing going around with Wills being accused by Waletta and Adashino as the one who killed Trevor, but with necromancy at work El-Melloi knew the answer isn't as obvious as it looks. Reines stumbled upon something really suspicious and was nearly put down for good had Shishigou not saved the two girls. The intrigue is building here, especially with Waletta getting struck there at the end.

              Episode 5

He who controls fairies controls the world.

Just like with the last case El-Melloi solved, the perpetrator in this case is none other than the victim himself. Trevor turned his mansion into a house of evil as he turned it into a place where he could tap into the power of the fairies and rule the world. But his conquest was cut short when one of the fairies killed him, and because of the damage he had done, the gates to the fairy realm remained open allowing those lightning dogs to zap away. Once the case was solved, Gray unleashed Lancer Altria's Noble Phantasm (you would know this if you had played Fate/Grand Order like I have been) to save the day. While the case has been solved, there is quite a lot of uneasiness going on. It will be interesting to see where this all leads to, but nevertheless that was an excellent use of things from other Fate series shows.

                Shop until the mall drops.

And now, a breather episode here as Gray and Reines go shopping at a mall owned by Luvia. After trying on new clothes and going around to look for stuff, they stumble upon a secret as to why this mall is ritzier than it really should be. As it turns out, there's gem magic at work that's keeping fortune from escaping the confines of the mall. Pretty nice to see those girls getting more attention seeing that it has been mostly focused on the cases at hand, but that was quite a good way to transition into the main attraction of this series, and why Rail Zeppelin is part of the show's title as next time it's going to be about that.

                  Episode 7

                  All aboard the vampire train.

And now, the Rail Zeppelin part of this show's title takes form here as Iskandar's relic was stolen, and El-Melloi gets an invitation from an anonymous sender to board the Rail Zeppelin. Lots of familiar faces join up as Olga-Maria from FGO fame is there, as well as Hishiri, Yvette, and Karabo from the Holy Church. It's mostly chatter here as everybody talks about things at play from finding the invitation's sender to the Mystic Eyes, and El-Melloi's involvement in the Holy Grail Wars and how as Waver, nobody thought highly of him until after the War. But before they can get to any of this, they have to solve a case as Trisha is found dead, and something's amiss about all this. So this figures to last the rest of the season as there are quite a lot of things at play, all while there figures to be several cases that need to be solved in all this.

What you see is not what you get.

So Trisha was murdered by someone wanting her mystic eyes. And while El-Melloi goes searching for answers, he encounters Iskandar's confidante, Hephaestion. She's quite powerful there seeing that she left El-Melloi in such a sorry state, all while lots of other investigations are going on. The Rail Zeppelin sure is full of mysteries and there was a lot of action going on here seeing that there's something that just doesn't add up in all this.

                      Spaced out.

Lots more deductions here as the Rail Zeppelin continues to be full of twists and turns, all while El-Melloi is out of commission after that encounter with Hephaestion, and her master still remains at-large. The train goes through a snowy forest, all while Gray goes out to battle Hephaestion. And then there's Olga finding out where exactly Trisha's head has gone as it's in an alternate space. The mysteries and questions just keep on piling as there's a lot going on.

                        Episode 10

                        What's the motive?

And it begins with a dream sequence involving Waver and Kayneth to set the stage as it's all about desires. While that's going on, Hephaestion suspends the battle seeing that dying in the snowstorm isn't exactly what she had intended, and Gray sure was groovy there snowboarding back to the train. And with everybody back on board Rail Zeppelin, Adashino thinks she has solved the mystery regarding Trisha's murder pointing fingers at Karado, but El-Melloi is not convinced seeing that it's missing one critical piece, the motive. And then Karado loses his eyes with El-Melloi concluding that the thief is the same person who killed Trisha. There are quite a lot of things going on here, and Adashino just reeks of suspicion. It will be interesting to see who this person El-Melloi is talking about.

                          Episode 11

                          One truth prevails.

The auction for the Mystic Eyes is on, and the bidding was quite intense, so much that it needed a break seeing that El-Melloi didn't realize how much he really had in expendable assets. And the auction continues again, but it was interrupted as El-Melloi explains that he figured out the culprit, all while taking jabs at Hishiri and her intentional ignorance of a key fact. While Karado did kill Trisha, he was influenced. Next time, the case concludes as the culprit is finally revealed after a whole lot of drama on the train.

                            Everything about him is fake.

So after a bunch of digging, El-Melloi has arrived at the answer, and the culprit is Dr. Heartless. That was quite the elaborate scheme he cooked up there forcing Karado to do his dirty work. Against an ordinary detective he would have most definitely gotten away with murder and pin the blame on Karado. But El-Melloi knew better as the lack of motive on Karado's part was the key. And from that comes a huge battle outside the Rail Zeppelin between Hephaestion and Gray as El-Melloi figures out that she isn't one of the normal servants and is a Faker, all while Heartless wanted to monopolize the Grail War. There was just so much going on here, and with that the case has been solved, all while Gray unleashed her Noble Phantasm on Hepaestion. One more episode left as the next order of business is to tie up loose ends.

                              Episode 13 (Finale)

                              Class is back in session.

Pretty much, this episode ties up loose ends as there were quite a lot of them with the end of the Rail Zeppelin case. While the events that transpired in a case like this was likely getting them inside the doghouse with the Mages Association, they were all let off the hook. Svin is promoted to Pride, and if it weren't already the case, El-Melloi is done for good with the Grail Wars, and considering that his talents are better used elsewhere that it's for the best. So with that, the show ends and it's back to daily life as a professor and a detective, and it's only appropriate that it ends with a dream sequence involving Iskandar since it's because of him that Waver's life changed for the better back in Fate/Zero. While this show wasn't always at the top of its game, it was always entertaining to watch.

Overall, this show is gimmicky, but utilized the right way as the production team did an excellent job in focusing their efforts on producing a meaningful story. The technical details are simply incredible as the animation is great, the soundtrack is another masterpiece by Yuki Kajiura, and the action and supernatural aspects are great eye candy. The show really stands out when the storytelling is well-executed, which unfortunately was not all the time. As such, the show's biggest problem is that the storywriting was inconsistent as while some episodes were well-written, others just didn't leave a big impact that others did. In any case, it's another worthwhile entry into the Fate franchise that more than satisfies the fans of Fate and Type Moon.

                              MAL Rating:
