    Episode 12

They've got a mountain to climb.

It has been awhile since the last episode as it took the last three weeks off. So more teammates qualify, all while Kakeru gets scouted out. And seeing that there are still more members that need to qualify that the team heads off to the mountains to get their minds off the summer heat. But it also turns out that another team is there, and that red-haired bastard really provoked them. These boys need to learn some anger management as it's all over if they don't keep that in check. And that ending was really ominous there with Kakeru about to punch that guy after he said some pretty nasty things to taunt him. Things sure are getting out of hand.

      Episode 13

      Running into trouble.

Kakeru's shameful past comes to light after his teammates restrained him just in time before punching that jerk, who used to attend the same high school. He used to be a rising star in track, but when his coach cut a fellow teammate because of an injury, it got personal and he punched the coach. And that did quite a lot of damage to his career as he was kicked off the track team, and he lost his college scholarship. But his teammates let him know that this club is nothing like that, and that he just needs a change of scenery to get his life back on track. I had been waiting for this episode as what ails Kakeru finally comes to light.

        Episode 14

        Together for the long run.

After what happened the previous episode, these boys are working harder than ever, and while it took a few more tries than everybody else, the Prince has finally clocked in an official time. Now that all ten boys are marathon-eligible, it's onto the qualifiers to decide which track teams will run at Hakone. That's quite a big accomplishment there seeing that it didn't look like those boys had a chance with only two experienced runners and everybody else just getting started.

          Episode 15

          Running with destiny.

Now that everybody is eligible to participate in competitions, it's onto the qualifier, and the boys are hard at work, as well as scouting the course as while the boys are focused, a lot of ominous things are happening. The coach gets drunk just before he was about to tell these boys some advice, and then there's that phone call. And then on the day of the race it's raining, and then at the end one of the runners from another school takes a spill, something that this team can ill-afford as they only have ten runners and everybody else has 12 with only the fastest ten times counting. So now that the stage has been set, it's time that these boys really get their game on as their goal is right in sight.

            Episode 16

            Stop dreaming, start running.

And the ragtag Kansei team has qualified for the Hakone marathon. It was a tough race and I had a feeling this would happen where they are the last team to qualify, but nevertheless they accomplished their dream. It almost didn't happen as they beat the 11th place team by one second, and Haiji's knees almost gave way after nearly tripping over that runner who crashed at the table, and Prince was in such bad shape that he was almost escorted out. In the end, everybody persevered and it's onto Hakone. However, while they made their goal, there's a lot of disagreement going on and that is certainly something that they will need to sort out.

              Episode 17

              Questions have been answered.

While the Kansei team made it, not everybody is on the same page, especially the twins as they want to play soccer, but Haiji doesn't want to risk injury. But after Kakeru tricked those two in to coming along on a field trip through the course that they are seeing things in a different light. Haiji sure has done a great job leading this team with the biggest sign of progress being that encounter with Sakaki as the boys kept their cool and not retaliate. Not to mention, he drove home the message that it's all about doing their best, and the results don't matter in the end. Just when things were going well, Haiji goes and gets surgery, which could jeopardize his participation in the race that will DQ the Kansei team as they have no reserves. Some drama is about to go down with the surgery and stuff as I have a feeling that everybody will be worried, but he'll recover just in time to run in this marathon.

                Episode 18

                And they're off and running.

So now that everybody is focused on running, they have to navigate through a lot of distractions, from Haiji's knee surgery to the talk about having a foreigner equates to cheating, as well as Kakeru's past where he punched his former track coach being revealed to the public in a magazine, and Shindo catching a cold. But in light of everything, everybody is all ready to go and make a name for themselves. So it's onto the big event with Prince leading things off, followed by Musa, Jota, Joji, and Shindo on the way to Hakone, and then Yuki, Nico, King, Kakeru, and Haiji on the return trip. So it has started, and the race should really be something.

                  Episode 19

                  For the long run.

And the race has begun with Prince starting things off. He is their weakest runner, but he managed to pull through thanks to Haiji's words of wisdom. Then comes Musa, who is a better athlete but doesn't pace himself properly. But he made up a lot of ground as they have climbed into the middle of the pack, and even made a friend in Iwanki, who is also from Africa running the same leg. Then comes Jota as he was cheered on by Hana, and he took that as a possible love confession. So three runners in, the Kansei team is looking pretty good all things considered, but the big test is yet to come as Shindo is not looking well, and he's on the last leg of the first day.

                    Episode 20

                    Finish what you started.

That declaration of love served as motivation for Joji as after an initial struggle, he wants to show her that he's better than his brother. But then comes the moment of truth as a sick Shindo is now running, and he's just looking miserable there as he's struggling to keep himself upright battling a cold and running in such an erratic way. Despite being asked to pull out of the competition, he has just enough to make it to the finish line so that Kansei can keep on running. Shindo sure did show a lot of grit and determination there even though he's being stubborn about it, but now that his role is over, he needs a good, long rest, and so does everybody else as that's the end of the first day of the relay marathon.

                      Episode 21

                      Run with the snow.

While Kansei made it to Day 2, they have a lot of ground to make up after Shindo's struggle. First up is Yuki, and he makes up some of the deficit to bring them up to 16th, while Nico continues the climb up in the standings. But then King struggles, all while Kakeru is up against a guy from Rikudo that has his eyes set on the sectional record, and Kakeru respons by saying that he will break that. While Kansei has made up ground, they probably have no shot at the championship with the way King is struggling, even with Kakeru and Haiji up next. It will be interesting to see how this all ends.

                        Episode 22

                        The goal is in sight.

As it turns out, King's rhythm was off as he went too fast and was setting himself up to run out of gas down the stretch, but he corrected all that rather quickly, and his backstory is told going to show that while everybody runs the same path, their endgoal is in different places. So he does well enough, and now it's Kakeru's turn as he's determined to break the section record and is all about outdoing Fujioka, who is the top runner in this race. And run fast he is doing as the race is winding down. Once again, a great story accompanies the sports action. One more episode left.

                          Episode 23 (Finale)

                          Crossing the finish line.

Things pretty much went down as I expected them to with Fujioka breaking the section record only for Kakeru to break it minutes later, and Kansei finishes in 10th to clinch an automatic berth in next year's event. Kakeru had no problem with his segment returning to form. And then came the last segment with Haiji and his surgically repaired knee that he was running on with the help of painkillers. He was clearly gassed, but he made it to the end. As such, Kansei is the fifth team across the finish line, good for 10th overall. Emotions sure were running high there, and it's a beautiful sight to watch. As such, Kansei now has a proper track and field team, but the dorm is set to be demolished. Nevertheless, everybody is happy and has gained a lot through this excursion, and it's a great way to finish things off.

Overall, this show started off really slowly as it had a tough time getting its footing, but once it does things really take off. From the halfway point onward, this show just thrived as the character development is off the charts, all while the sport was properly utilized to build characters. The show struggled to establish itself in the beginning as the characters were introduced too quickly to keep track, all while some of the antics just didn't sit well. But once the show got past that stage, the story is top notch.
