    Episode 8

In another world with Kurisu Makise.

So Kurisu's surprise appearance means Okabe has found himself in another timeline, one where Kurisu lives and Mayrui does not. Okabe is just a total wreck there seeing that now he's feeling the guilt over letting Mayuri die. This Kurisu knows that Okabe is not from this timeline, so she said all the right things there. That was quite a emotional reunion there, especially with that kiss at the end seeing that he won't be able to see her again when he goes back.

      Re: Episode 8

What a fucking incredible episode all around. From the initial shock to the reminder of what this world line represents to Okabe taking Mayuri's place of mourning, with all the beautiful imagery involved, and finally Kurisu helping Okabe sacrifice her once more, tying back into those original scenes set to the visual novel ending. Just brilliant.

        Episode 9

        On the eve of destruction.

Things were so nice and well for Okabe in the other world, save for the fact that Mayuri is dead there, but back in his original world, all hell is about to break loose, starting with the earthquakes in Russia as they are out to steal Kurisu's time machine research, and more specifically Amadeus, and then World War III starts. Things are about to get ugly, and in fact it already has with Suzuha demanding Okabe to come back with him to the past threatening to kill him if he doesn't. I had a feeling things would quickly get out of hand once Okabe returned, and things have been set into motion.

Great confrontation between Okabe and Suzuha, paired with some great music to make it even more effective. Even better material for each of them and their respective closest people after that. Very much looking forward to seeing how this develops in the near future.

            Episode 10

If you die, you can't listen.

This episode focuses on Maho as she had quite a close relationship with Kurisu to the point where she's giving her mother a replacement plushie even though Kurisu herself is never going to get it as things stand. And then comes the end there where Okabe can inherit all of Kurisu's research, but by doing so he's opening up Pandora's Box as he puts it, as it was that research that started WWIII in those other timelines. Okabe sure has quite a big decision on his hand as the research could be the key to traveling into Steins;Gate where both Kurisu and Mayuri are alive, but at the same time WWIII is always on his mind.

Well damn, that was quite the slumber party. I think I have a new love of Moeka, which I never thought I'd say. And Nae was also super wacky. What a change from the much more serious material around Maho, both from her old memories with Kurisu detailing the inferiority complex she held for the genius and from her dark date with Okabe that leads to a very troubling revelation.

                Episode 11

                What will Okrain do?

In the end, Okabe decides that it's for the best to destroy the laptop with the research to stop WWIII from starting, but before that could happen those masked goons come back to try and steal it before it got destroyed in a shootout. At this juncture, they played it safe seeing that there could be another chance to fix the world, but starting WWIII was the last thing they wanted to do. So with that, winter break has ended and Maho and the professor are back in America to start up the next semester. The decision was pretty much expected, but how it was decided for them was really something. It will be interesting o see what happens next now that Maho has gone back.

                  Re: Episode 11

Although it has seemed pretty obvious that Leskinen and Judy are among the villains all along, they do seem to be playing with us a little by showing Yuki with some injuries, albeit not on the level that Judy appears to be covering up. I would guess that's just a red herring, but there's always room for more surprises relating to the established cast. That is very much Steins;Gate at its core. Looking forward to seeing where this second cour takes us. Should be lots of new developments after perhaps a more extended period of apparent peace? They have plenty of years to work with, so I'm very curious. Certainly not the last we've seen of any of those characters.

                    Episode 12

                    Remember that song.

This episode is all about Kagari as she's from the future, and she came into this world without her memories. But it was through that song that Kagari finally remembers that Mayuri is her mother, at least adopted one seeing that she's a war orphan who didn't know who her real one is. Suzuha sure can eat seeing that she doesn't get many opportunities to eat on the battlefield. That was a pretty emotional moment there at the end seeing Mayuri recognizing Mayuri there, but as with all good things with this show, it's not going to last as someone out to hunt her down has shown up there at the end.

                      Re: Episode 12

The greatest reveal of this episode, of course, is that Okabe has a mother! Maybe in Steins;Gate -1 we'll get to see her face.

Other than that, the fact that a young Okabe heard the song from Kagari implies a paradox, specifically a causal loop, that will be interesting to explore. Poetic that she seemed to pass along the means to reacquire her memories just as the enemy was about to strike, at any rate. It will definitely be interesting to learn what secrets those memories hold. I imagine that will jump-start the second half proper, and likely bring people like Leskinen and probably Judy back into the mix.

                        Episode 13

                        Kagari was here.

Things were starting to look up when Kagari regains her memories, at least that from her younger years, but she is still missing a huge chunk of it. Some things just aren't adding up there as Suzuha knew something was amiss. And then that discovery inside the building near the place Kagari was found leads to some shocking truths there as she was being held captive, all while begging for mommy. Damn, that was a punch to the gut there between that discovery of what really is going on, to Kagari disappearing in the end. Just like in the first season, that moment has happened and it happens at the end of the first half as it happened to Mayuri in the first season, and now Kagari is the victim.

This recent material definitely hasn't been capturing me quite as much, but I'm certainly intrigued to learn more about Kagari's past and the danger that awaits her still. The usage of the Mozart piece and the flashes of repressed memories to further imply Kagari's connection to the Amadeus project, mostly likely through Leskinen himself given the familiarity of the figure we see obscured in various ways, was effective in building the suspense to end it on. The exact effect this event had on Kagari I can't be sure of; perhaps we'll be seeing Leskinen, Judy, or some more masked villains, or just a much less composed Kagari to contend with whenever they manage to catch up with her. It would certainly eat Suzuha alive if she loses track of Kagari again for any extended period of time.

                            Episode 14

                            Look who's under the helmet.

The second half begins with it being several months since Kagari disappeared as it's now summer, and Maho and Leskinen have come back to Japan on summer break. And that assassin wearing a motorcycle outfit has been unmasked, and to Suzuha's surprise it's Kagari. That brings up a lot of questions there as it probably was a different person who attacked them the last time if all things are consistent. It's clear that Kagari is being brainwashed as she's out for blood, which is a 180 from her previous self. The mysteries just keep on thickening there. And to mark the second half, the opening theme has the same song with new animation while there's a new ending.

Not a 1:1 parallel with the beta version of "Hacking to the Gate," but I still appreciate the subtle changes to wardrobes, weather, and expressions to match the changes after these several months have passed.

By the way, that brings us to mid-2011, a time at which the first Steins;Gate anime was most definitely airing.

                                Future happiness depends on it.

This episode is all about Suzuha as she didn't exactly live a happy life where she came from, and neither did her parents as she remembers all to well what Yuki did to protect her. So Suzuha is out to change that by getting Daru and Yuki to date. While the first time didn't go well, Daru wasn't rejected because Yuki said no as it was she had to hurry out. The second time, it worked as those two fell for each other. That was nice to see Daru and Yuki happy together seeing that this was what Suzuha wanted the most.
