    Episode 5

    Love is tough.

The same formula is used here as Kotarou and Akane struggle, and then the episode ends with the two having some time alone to talk about what has been going on in life, this time happening at a shop that Kotarou's friend works at. Kotarou has been struggling with his novel, while Akane isn't performing up to snuff in track. Just when things are getting good between those two, a love triangle is formed as Chinatsu wants Kotarou. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Aww, knew it; the signs were all there. Thought Chinatsu was more perceptive than that and I hope she isn't trolling Akane out of jealousy. Could be she's just saying that despite (maybe?) knowing they're going out, as to push Akane to be more assertive about the relationship. Hard to really know since Chinatsu comes in from left field and at the most inconvenient times... Will be interesting to see how the rest of the class react if they ever see her alone with Kotarou.

        Re: Episode 5

So sweet... seeing them unsure how to proceed and consulting the eminent Google-sama. I like how Akane actually has the guts to come out about it to her sister, knowing that teasing might be ahead of her. But sister does actually respond quite nicely. And even though Kotarou is really indirect about it, the bookstore friend catches on and really comes through for him in the end where they were having trouble meeting. As it is now, having to keep it a secret from their class friends is really stifling things as far as their relationship at school goes. They had one opportunity, and then Chinatsu made that one awkward. Hoping that the "secret" will be out in at least a few episodes and not as we're nearing the end of the series.

Ah, and about Chinatsu... Going to be interesting to see what's going to happen going forward with her friendship with Akane, now that Akane knows Chinatsu has a crush on her (secret) boyfriend. Really can't keep things bottled away from Chinatsu and Hira for too much longer, I hope.

yeah, hoping Akane decides to come out with the relationship, otherwise she'll be victimized by her own (mis)fortune. Kind of weird seeing how her performance is taking a hit despite not being directly affected by Chinatsu from before, or had it... Wondering if Akane really did have those lingering feelings from before, but they didn't manifest into a real fear until Chinatsu dropped the news. Also wondering if Chinatsu is really that selfish in stealing Kotarou, when it was pretty evident she did know the two were interested in each other. I'm thinking she's really just trolling, but even then, what a dickish move...messing with their naivety and innocence like that.

            Episode 6

            That's the way life goes.

It's the day of the track meet, but an impromptu meeting with the editor means he couldn't attend the track meet. Without Kotarou in attendance, Akane stumbles in the meet, and while that is happening Kotarou is being told by the publisher that he just isn't going to make it as a novelist, but his writing style might be better suited for writing light novels instead, and with youth on his side that he is encouraged to give that a try. I knew that trouble was coming after Chinatsu declared her love for Kotarou, and that is exactly what happens here as both Kotarou and Akane suffer huge setbacks. Not everything in life can go smoothly as those two just found out.

              Re: Episode 6

Heh, Akane should have known that her troll of a sister was not going to keep the face Akane is in a relationship secret from the parents. Mom is rather delighted, though. Kind of sweet how later on she was wanting Ayane to back her up after she suspected relationship trouble with the track performance. Dad is predictable, but don't think he has much to worry about with the personalities of the people dating his daughters (the show segment from the previous episode was amusing).

Kotarou's parents don't know of his relationship yet (not having a chatty sibling, it might be a while), but the interesting thing there is how differently they feel about Kotarou's attempts at being serious as a writer. Kotarou has to evade a rather critical mom, while dad is actually a little encouraging.

The Akane most seems to be hung up on is what to do with Chinatsu, though. It seems like she's going to come out with it to Kotarou first, but then she probably feels like it's going to be too much of a distraction to him after he tells her about the publisher call.

Poor Kotarou. He gets to show a lot of uncharacteristic courage and composure going to the book publisher. And what he gets is the opposite of encouraging, saying he's not cut out for "serious" literature even though it's the only thing he seems to be aiming for given his interests. Kotarou is obviously not going for the light novel push. But even after a discouraging blow like that, he still able to keep that composure. Nice that he tries to connect with Akane as a way for them to both vent.

But of course there's that element of Chinatsu that Kotarou does not entirely seem to be aware of yet. Akane actually had gathered the courage to tell Chinatsu of their relationship. Not much of a surprise that Chinatsu isn't oblivious to that fact. So what is she angling for here? Akane is too sweet to want to break up her friendship with Chinatsu as her sister suggests. Is Akane going to take up Chinatsu's offer? Seems likely that Chinatsu will be rejected and get the closure she at least says she's aiming for. But even if Kotarou does so, there could still be a cloud over their future interactions. I wonder if Akane will end up regretting not following her sister's advice.

We get the megane otaku girl in the shorts this time even if I'm not sure if we've even seen her in the main show itself. I like how she defies convention a bit. Nine times out of ten we get a girl having delusions like this we know there's going to be BL involved. But Sakura goes the otoge harem route instead. Hah. I wonder if we'll get her in the show proper and what role she will play.

Also, Miu is such a quirky handful. Just as her boyfriend thinks he has skillfully dodged all of the landmines... He misses one small (expensive) thing.

                Re: Episode 6

Hah, that cliffhanger.. Is Chinatsu going to do what she really says? Or is this just a red herring where she'll otherwise confess she likes him, but can't commit since he's already taken? I really hope she isn't taking this misunderstanding as an opportunity to steal Kotarou from Akane, if it really is a misunderstanding. Akane should make it pretty clear that she's still in love with him to dispel any assumptions, though Chinatsu is also pretty quick to the draw, trying to take advantage of it. Or maybe Chinatsu isn't, and the next episode will have her pulling Akane's leg as an attempt to perk her up.

Kotarou meeting with the publisher was a little odd. Wondering if this is really common- to ask someone to come over just to reject them. Usually I'd think a simple call or formal letter (or nothing at all) would suffice in turning down a submission. Seems like a jerk move to waste peoples' time (and money, which Kotarou aptly cringes at) just to say 'good luck'.

The shorts remain amusing, although Ryouko-sensei and Roman seem to be maintaining that creep factor pretty consistently. And ouch to Inaba. Someone as high maintenance as Miu might be asking for trouble in the long haul. Yikes.

                  Episode 7

Love is like a roller coaster.

It's onto an amusement park as Akane and Kotarou are joined by Chinatsu, Hira, and Roman for a day of fun with friends. But even so love just doesn't take a day off. After seeing Hira going after Akane that Kotarou is letting him know that she belongs to him, and of course that totally makes Chinatsu upset. Things sure have gotten needlessly complicated for those two. Anyway, that had a roller coaster of emotion there, and Akane and Kotarou might want to find a better place to kiss because there are too many kids there to watch it happen.

                    Re: Episode 7

Yeah... Chinatsu really puts our main couple in an awkward spot, having Hira and the friends who are Hira-shipping around. And she gets to making some moves towards getting close to Kotarou. It does turn out Kotarou has a bro on his side, though. Roman caught on and he finally comes out with it while they're alone. I like how, in the end, though Kotarou gets to taking this on himself as Hira being "lost" with Akane provokes him into action.

And dang was I so happy to see it when he finally gets to being really bold, and Akane doesn't back down either in the situation even if she's predictably meek. Given how low-key those two have been, Hira is unsurprisingly taken aback at first. But he seems to settle into being rather chill about it (Roman gets to play a part when he airs the question in public). Poor Chinatsu definitely takes it quite visibly, though. I think she was counting on the awkwardness in public in continuing to make her move, but Kotarou stood up for himself and inadvertently shattered that last hope of hers. I don't think we've seen Chinatsu interacting with Akane's friends outside the track club, so it was really sweet to see how perceptive and supportive they were of her. They had been egging on a relationship that Akane wasn't really into it, but it's nice to see a really positive heartwarming moment from them and some acknowledgement of what they didn't know. Going to be interesting to see how things go forward with Akane's girl friendships now that her boyfriend is finally public.

Heh, speaking of that with Akane, it's nice in the extra segments how she's able to subtly turn that trio of friends around from being catty about Ryouko-sensei to admiring her. We got a heck of a lot of those extras this time (nice way to celebrate a breakthrough in the main story, I guess). More Sakura delusions, please! Fun how we find out the breakup with Setsuko actually happened (will they get back together?) by leading into a Sakura delusion segment based on it.

                      Re: Episode 7

Huh, thought Chinatsu was more aware of the situation she put herself in. Looks like she really was enamored with Kotarou, but unfortunately for her, he wasn't going to allow Akane to slip away. Nice to see Kotarou having the confidence to confront and confess his relationship in front of Hira, and Hira being accepting of that fact. Kind of pity him since he was oblivious to everything, especially since the other girls kept insisting and pushing him toward Akane. Chinatsu's interference didn't help with that, though it's a bit relieving seeing this misunderstanding finally put to rest. Didn't really expect to see that kind of heartbreak from either one, but thankfully it didn't resort to melodramatic fisticuffs and catfights.

And the extra segments were better without Ryouko-sensei fantasizing about Roman, and instead, being centered around the girls. Sakura's delusions are amusing, though still stereotypical of a nerdy-looking type being the butt of jokes, and the jock and the party going type as well. Though is probably the best of the segments so far.

                        Episode 8

                        Best wishes.

It's Kotarou's birthday, and it is celebrated at the festival where Akane gives him that same plush doll she owns. Quite a nice way to bring those two even closer together as now the relationship is known. And to be together forever, that's a great wish to make at the festival as they have come such a long way.

Looks like Akane ridding her potato won't happen afterall, seeing how she buys the same charm for Kotarou. And her friends are seemingly more friendly with her now that they know she's really dating and with whom. Chinatsu also seems to have gotten over it too, praising Akane for being lucky to have a boyfriend.

Ah, a lot more hilarious shorts. Especially liked Aira and Kaneko; Sakura and Roman; and Kotarou's parents. :D

I like how with at least one of her friends, Aoi on the track team, Akane gets a bit of sympathy over how much attention she's going to get. Though we see later with her that Aoi feels having a boyfriend is kind of a pain in general. Her persona does appear to be appreciated by the boys in her post-ep short, though. Wonder if things may change in her attitude about that or if she will stick to it.

While it's a streak that's unlikely to keep going to the end, it's nice to get a bit of a breather here free of major drama and a lot of particularly sweet moments. They were embarrassed about being public before, but they get a lot of positive moments out of being open now. Particularly cute seeing Akane watch Kotarou's performance and get really into it, and also her late birthday present for him. She feels awkward in how to do it, but her feelings ultimately get through perfectly. Ahh... and of course such an appropriate moment for Touyama Nao's cover of "Natsu Matsuri" Welp, there's another version of that song I'm going to be listening to.

Akane is a bit awkward in deciding how to respond to her friends as I'd expect, not being able to say at first what she likes in Kotarou. But by the next experience at the end of the episode, and just as they are digging into Kotarou a little bit by calling him plain, she really has some adorably heartwarming things to answer the question with. Such a nice note of the progress we've gotten.

                              Episode 9

                              A future of uncertainty.

The relationship faces its greatest obstacle yet as it's possible that Akane's family will be moving to Chiba. As much as those two would love to go to the same school, unfortunately they are at the mercy of family circumstances with Akane's father potentially getting a job in Chiba. So before the time the decision comes, Akane has her last track meet of her middle school days and posts a personal best as Kotarou came this time, and then there's the festival coming up that Kotarou is performing at. That was pretty bittersweet seeing that this romance could very well end just like that. It will be interesting to see what happens from here seeing that Kotarou got the OK to go wherever he wants for high school, while for Akane the move may or may not happen.

The end of their middle school track activities is a bit like a graduation moment there. It was sweet to see how close of a bond those three had to get them emotional reflecting back on it.

I had a feeling something like this was going to come up... that in their choice of high school they may have to part. And Akane may be moving further away than just a different high school in the same area. It was interesting that Hira ended up getting the news first. I had wondered if that was going to develop into drama with Kotarou not knowing. But that won't be the case (I assume some drama may come from Hira later, but not that reason) since Akane thankfully doesn't hold it back. Going to be interesting to see how they take it going forward.
