A spinoff of the Fate franchise where instead of the Holy Grail War being a seven servant battle royale in Japan, instead it is a fight between two clans in Romania, each with their own set of servants.

    Airs: Saturday, July 1, 2017

    Studio: A-1 Pictures

The setting is a parallel world to Fate/stay night where the Greater Grail mysteriously disappeared from Fuyuki after the Third Holy Grail War. After many years of silence, around the same time as the Fifth Holy Grail War would have happened, the Yggdmillennia, a family of magi, openly declares their secession from the Mage's Association, and that they are in possession of the Grail. The Association dispatches fifty magi to retrieve it, and all but one are instantly slaughtered by a mysterious Servant. The one remaining manages to activate the reserve system of the Greater Grail, allowing for the summoning of fourteen Servants in total.

In the city of Trifas, two factions will fight for the control of the sacred relic, each of them possessing their own team of seven Servants: the Black Faction whose members are part of Yggdmillennia, protecting the Grail, and the Red Faction whose members were sent by the Mage's Association, trying to take the Grail back. For an event of this scale, the Grail itself summons its own Servant, the holy Ruler, to oversee the conflict.

This marks the start of the Great Holy Grail War.

    Episode 1

    Here come the servants.

It begins pretty much the same way Fate/Zero did, except that it involves twice as many servants in half the time. But now, it's a battle royale between Clock Tower and the Yggdmillennia family meaning that it's effectively a 7 on 7 battle (although in the end only one wish can be granted). Nevertheless, the characters are quite an interesting bunch, especially the black faction. It's off to a great start, but for now I need to keep my expectations in check seeing that this is a much different story than the original Fate series.

      Episode 2

Let's get to know each other.

Now that the servants have been summoned, everybody is taking different approaches to the war. Most of the black team is together seeing that they are revealing their identities to each other, something that would spell defeat if the wrong person knows about it, while the red team, not so much. Astolfo and Frankenstein sure do stand out for different reasons, while Gordes isn't exactly on the same page as the rest of the team or his servant. Meanwhile, Sisigou is making quick work of those black underlings. Pretty solid way to introduce the servants on the black team, but in the meantime there's still Jeanne who is supposed to be the MC but hasn't gotten much attention yet, all while there are bound to be great tension just like with Fate/Zero when servants and masters don't think leading to all sorts of problems.

        Episode 3

        What do you wish for?

Karna is quite the aggressive one there attacking Jeanne, all while the other MC has appeared in the form of a homunculus that just came out of its tube with only three years to live. But luckily, Siegfried was there to tell Karna to scram. And then wishes are revealed from Frankenstein's mother wanting another being just like her to live with, to Chiron wanting immortality, and Fiore wanting to walk again without sacrificing her magic, and Siegfried is quite unsure what he wants as he has a hard time remembering. But if any of those wishes are to come true, they will first have to defeat Spartacus as the red Berserker is on the attack.

So with that, I think I'll go one more episode before waiting until Netflix releases this show in November, and then continue on when that happens. As much as I want to keep going, my watchlist is getting full that I need to cut back, and with it not being legally available anywhere at the moment it will probably go to the drop zone until then.

          Episode 4

          Entrusted with his heart.

And so, the first battle royale is on, and the first casualty is none other than Siegfried. It's a shame that he bowed out so early, but that's what happens when a servant with a strong heart is paired with an absolute shithead of a master, much like how things were in Fate/Zero. At least his heart was used to save a life just when it looked like the homunculus was a goner, which is what he had wished for all this time. Nevertheless, that was quite a sad sight, but Gordes definitely didn't deserve to have him with the wasteful use of two command seals all but sealing his fate. In the meantime, Chiron sure did show Achilles and Atalanta not to mess with him.

So with that, I will put this show on hold and wait until Netflix releases it before continuing on with this show. While it certainly is one of the weaker adaptations of a Fate series, it still does a great job in upholding the spirit of the franchise. In any case, I'm out for the time being.

            Episode 5

            Freedom isn't free.

The homunculus is now free and takes on the name of Sieg to honor the hero who sacrificed himself to save him (as well as to cut ties with that bastard of a master). In the meantime, the black faction is dealing with a problem on their team as Jack the Ripper killing people and causing quite a big problem for everybody. And on top of that, there is Celenike being so cruel towards Astolfo seeing that this is yet another one of those agonizingly bad master-servant relationships. Things are looking extremely bleak for the black faction, and even more so with Sieg if what Jeanne prophecized comes to fruition.

              Episode 6

              Disowned for the throne.

So Mordred is the child of King Arthur (better known as Saber in the Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night), and she led a rebellion because Arthur wouldn't recognize her for the throne, and thus her reason for wanting the Holy Grail. So on that note, she and Sisigou are fighting Fiore and Chiron, all while Jack continues to go on a killing spree. Fiore sure got herself in quite a big jam as the black faction continues to find themselves in a lot of trouble. There's Gordes being extremely disgusted with Siegfried, Darnic willing to sacrifice anything and everything, Jack killing, and now Fiore about to bite the dust.

                Episode 7

                Fortress take flight.

And just like that, it's Caules to the rescue as he saves his big sister in dramatic fashion with the battle ending in a stalemate. While everybody is still standing, Shirou's plan comes to fruition and now the fortress is floating in the sky. So now there's a huge battle on the horizon as some sinister plot is going on. And of course, there's no way Sieg is just going to stay on the sidelines to live a quiet life that was provided for him. Next time, the big battle begins, and it figures that there will be lots of casualties.

                  Hanging by a thread.

The big faction war begins, and the battle is well-animated there, especially the one between Chiron and Achilles as it's a battle between teacher and student. Then there's Vlad and Karna battling it out between Lancers, and Spartacus not exactly being loyal. There's quite a lot happening there just going to show the size and scale of this conflict. While all this is happening, Sieg is out to free the homunculi and give them a chance to live out their short lives.

                    Episode 9

                    Fueling the flames of war.

And the war continues as there is quite a lot going on here. From Astolfo having entered the no-fly zone to battling and getting the snot beat out from Mordred to Atalante using her Noble Phantasm on Spartacus that has no effect. Frankenstein's monster freaks out and Caules wisely uses a command seal to calm her down, while the homunculi are set free. Quite a large-scale war this is turning out to be as it's just chaos all-around. Now, Sieg is getting ready to fight Mordred, and he's just asking for it seeing that he is up against an extremely powerful servant all while he doesn't have much experience fighting.

                      Episode 10

                      En garde!

Siegfried is back, at least in spirit he is as Sieg transforms into him to battle Mordred, all while Frankenstein's monster blows herself up in an attempt to take Mordred down with her, but that didn't even leave a scratch. While Sieg can be a servant, the transformation just doesn't last long. Quite an explosive battle that was, but even so the black servants realize that they are at a huge disadvantage now that their Berserker is down and out, while Sieg just is nowhere as strong as Siegfried was.

                        Episode 11

                        Battling on their turf.

In the end, Mordred and Sieg both are still standing after that explosion, while Vlad finds himself at quite a big disadvantage as his powers are only good when he's fighting on Romanian soil, all while Jeanne has to use her Noble Phantasm in order to keep Sieg and Astolfo safe from Spartacus. In all this chaos, Shirou swipes the grail to put his scheme into fruition. And now, Darnic is getting all desperate realizing that Vlad just isn't going to win in the current situation, so he's forcing Vlad to use his Noble Phantasm. Things just keep on getting more and more chaotic, and now things are about to go over the edge thanks to Darnic.

                          Episode 12

                          Ruler, meet Ruler.

Darnic sure has lost his mind there not only turning Vlad into that monstrosity with that Noble Phantasm, but also seizing control of him. This is quite a big problem for everybody as Jeanne is ordering a cease fire to stop this guy from getting the Holy Grail, much in the way Gilles de Rais was in Fate/Zero. But in the end, Vlad was put out of his misery by Shirou, who is revealed to also be a Ruler with his true identity being Shirou Tokisada Amakusa, and while he squashed that threat, he has an agenda of his own seeing that Rulers are supposed to be refs in this battle, but he has clearly sided with the red faction. Poor Vlad had to put up with Darnic, and it's a shame that the black faction is so dysfunctional with Darnic, Gordes, Celenike, and Reika all being unfit for their servants, and now they are down three servants with Siegfried, Frankenstein's Monster, and now Vlad all having bitten the dust.

So with that, the first half has ended and I'll be awaiting the release of the second half on Netflix in the winter. So far, this show has been a disappointment given the show's roots and while it is still entertaining to watch, I felt that the story was just lacking in depth and all too eager to get to these servant battles. And while A-1 has done a fine job with the animation, I'm just spoiled by what Ufotable has done with this franchise as this is nowhere near their level.
