  • [Summer 2017] My First Girlfriend is a Gal Discussion Thread

    はじめてのギャル

A show about a guy desperate for a girlfriend who ends up becoming one with a gyaru. And of course, things aren't going to go smoothly.

    Airs: Wednesday, July 12, 2017

    Studio: NAZ

Spring. The "season of love" has arrived and it seems that finding himself a girlfriend was harder than Junichi believed. To break the status quo, Junichi's friends have forced him into confessing to the gal, Yame Yukana. However, things do not go quite as he expected. A series of "firsts" begins!

    Notes
As usual, please try to follow these two easy forum courtesy habits when replying:
    1) If you're the first person to post about an episode in any given week, please indicate in the first line which episode you're posting about.
    2) If someone has already posted about an episode before you, please quote that post (or a relevant reply to that post), or include the episode title in the first line. ("Re: Episode 1") Just make sure the episode is indicated.

For more guidelines please refer to this thread.

    Episode 1

    Anything for a girlfriend.

And once again, Crunchyroll got the censored Tokyo MX version rather than the uncensored AT-X version, which makes this show largely unwatchable. I was expecting this to be the sluttiest piece of trash as the animation style clearly signified that it was going to be an ecchifest, and indeed that's what it is except that most of the ecchiness is covered by those censoring hearts. That said, the biggest problem are the characters as Junichi is such a scumbag, all while Yukana is a highly cliched character. Everybody is a scumbag here, and none bigger than the MC While my expectations were pretty low coming in, still that was nothing but appalling.

So stealing somebody else's line, this will be the third such judgment:

    Kill'em with Fire!

That said, I'll watch one more episode as I feel obligated to watching at least the first two episodes before slamming the door, and the chances I won't are about as likely as the Jets winning the Super Bowl this season.

Well this looks like the most pornographic thing this season. Huh. Mildly entertaining largely because of how over-the-top it is, but definitely not something to continue.

I think only the trashy yuri show is more explicit than this one.

There is a lot to not like. The friends of the male lead are...if they weren't already out of the gene pool, they should be forcibly removed. The male lead himself is also very cringe-inducing.

But the Gal is actually kind of interesting.

This show will get one more, but if it doesn't stop the stupid stuff or doubles down on it next week, then I'll have more free time opening up.

That was my takeaway. So far, I like "The Gal". She'll probably make this show worth sticking around for. I certainly want to know why she likes the MC, who already has a harem that he's oblivious to, starting with the childhood-firend-loli with big boobs, all while bemoaning his lack of a girlfriend, when clearly at least 2 are there for the taking, while he asks out a 3rd girl.

This show isn't off to a terrible start, but it isn't off to a great one. Last year's Hybrid x Heart was the surprise show of the year, and it had a far worse first show. I don't expect that level of achievement with this show, I'm only pointing out that this isn't the worst opening episode to hit the ecchi circuit.

This show does, however, have one of the most annoying trends of Japan's ridiculous censorship laws: Censoring non-nudity. Yep, zero nudity in this first episode. all that gets censored is camel-toe, which can be seen on regular display at the beach, pools and water parks through out Japan. Whether the non-nudity of this series will continue, good question, but when there was the perfect opportunity for bare boobies to be on full display, there was that convenient long hair to hide any nipples.

It is over the top, and it has a likeable female lead, so I'll keep up with it. The MC is indeed a shallow perv, but then, so are most teenage boys his age.

            1) Her friendly, playful attitude in that picture, (despite being forced unwillingly into cosplay), reflects my own friendly, playful personality;
            2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and
            3) It makes it easiier for me to find my own posts in threads.

I don't find this show to be that ecchi (of course having just finished watching Tsugumomo may have something to do with that evaluation ) . It's like the show plays at being ecchi rather than just being ecchi (which you pointed out yourself in an earlier post). I'll continue the show for now to see how it develops, but the first episode was kinda flat for me. I can't completely put my finger on it, because while I don't mind either ecchi or "over the top" (in the right settings), it seemed like it was either forced, or it felt like they just went through the motions hitting the checkboxes.

Yes! Excellent post! That's the best analysis I've read describing this first episode. I've got problems with this show, and you pretty much summed up what they are: That this show has too much of a forced feeling to it, and that it's projecting itself as more ecchi than it actually is.

Nope, nothing directed at you, just my reasoning why something that portrays itself as so overtly ecchi is hitting the numbers that it is...which is no surprise, considering the massive traffic porn sites do on the net.

no, this is a surprise to me. Considering it has a huge disparity between replies to view count, it's bemusing because of the amount of attention it's already received compared to ongoing series that have just as many views (Sakura Quest; Re:Creators;....) despite the number of replies. Is there really such a huge group of lurkers clicking only on this particular series' thread? Seems odd to me and it's only the first episode. I don't even think Re:Zero (or KonoSuba for that matter) had that kind of engagement. If it follows the same trend for all episodes, this thread would be around 8400 views, 2.5x more than KonoSuba2.

TFP main site stories related to this show are getting significantly more page views than one might expect. Some of that traffic might then move to the forum and that may explain the much higher number of thread views. Mystery solved.

Yeah, that's likely the reason, but I still find it interesting this title seems to be an outlier. The view count just seem really high given that other ecchi titles have had nowhere near as much 'interest' or clicks from the main site or referral links. Tsugumomo? Barely anything. Seven Mortal Sins? Half of that. And that show had more t&a than this show. Or take any other 'ecchi' title (let alone high profile ones like AoT) has never had this kind of traffic.

Curious to what the retention rate will be though. Won't be surprised if all this was just a random fluke of drive-bys hoping to find links to the uncensored version, only to be disappointed and the views then remain stagnant here on out. :D Though why only this show still piques my interest. Something to do with gyaru fetishism striking an all-time high? I don't know...
