A show about rich kids attending school where it's all about gambling, high stakes no less. No need to go to Vegas when the school is a casino.

Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you're the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it's not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It's reading your opponent, the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling? At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she's gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!

    Episode 1

What happens in Hyakkaou stays in Hyakkaou.

Pretty intense way to begin things with that three-card rock-paper-scissors game. At this school, it's all about gambling, and Jabami sure is, as the show's title implies, compulsive with those big bets. But in the end, it was all about reading the opponent as Saotome thought she had the game in the bag, but Jabami saw right through her trick as with her mirror she knew that Saotome was using signals from her allies to cheat her way, all while Jabami used probability. Now that Jabami has a victory under her belt that things ought to get interesting. She could have used her winnings to free Suzui from his debt, but of course she is there for the thrill of it. Great start to this show so far.

So with that, I'm definitely going to be watching this show when it comes out on Netflix, but I'm not sure how far I'm willing to go until then. It definitely has great potential, and Yumeko certainly is the type of person to make for a great MC in this.

Take the designs from Prison School, contorted facial exaggerations from Youjo Senki, the absurdity of Jojo's, and mix it with a yandere version of Rio: Rainbow Gate and you have Kakegurui. :D Looks like the games will be for the most part, one on one, which I'm guessing rules out stuff like Roulette. Interesting start, though I was immediately annoyed with Mary reminding me of (coincidentally enough-) 'Mariya' from Maria?Holic, bleh. Glad she was shot down early, though perhaps she won't be the only annoying character Yumeko's going to face.

The OP reminds me of a cross between Arakawa Under the Bridge's OPs . Wouldn't be surprised if the director/composer is the same as Arakawa's, as there are notably similarities between the two.**

hah, that ED sequence... :D So fluid... Meteora would have a field day analyzing the line detail in it. Look at the line art, the motion/animation, the creases in her blouse as her weights shifts as she walks...her fingers aren't stiff...a very moderate amount of work put into an ED sequence when normally EDs aren't that 'flashy' or upbeat in general. Nice job, MAPPA.

**and as I suspected; indeed it is Sayo Yamamoto who was responsible for such artistic style. :D

          Episode 2

          She nailed it.

Next opponent for Yumeko is Itsuki Sumeragi, who is the daughter of a toy company CEO that manufactures playing cards. The game is memory using two unopened decks, and Itsuki is more about marketing than anything. So after Itsuki wins the first game, Yumeko demands a rematch putting her nails on the line if she loses, and Itsuki is using a deck with subtle differences in patterns that lets her know where each card is. While that would mean an easy win for Itsuki against anybody else, Yumeko is so observant and she picks up on her scheme right away winning without letting Itsuki even get a turn. Yumeko is quickly shaping up to be the best girl of the season as she's definitely owning the house. In the meantime, the student council has taken notice and now Kirari is out to make sure she gets rid of Yumeko after all that. This show continues to be great fun, and it's a shame that Netflix is sucking all the enthusiasm for this show this season.

            Re: Episode 2

I keep seeing people make comparisons to Shokugeki no Souma (though instead of food, it's gambling) which does seem to be a fair comparison considering both shows are hyper-detailed, especially during 'gasms, and both have an elite group of students that rule the school with their respective 'talents/gifts'. Though unlike Food Wars, being worthy/recognized by this exclusive elite entails a shady history, which looks to be the case for most, if not all of the top gamblers in the school.

I don't mind Yumeko being a Mary Sue, because although she may be OP'd by design, she isn't the typical protag to use this characteristic to justify a false identity. Rather, she uses her godlike gifts (similar to Erina's God tongue) to actually put people into place...basically saving them by calling out their cheating selves (though indirectly humiliating them in the process). So she is a goddess amongst the frauds who cheat their way to the top, and to see her disrupt the gambling world with her uncanny abilities to decipher their tricks, is pretty entertaining. And hearing Saori Hayami in psycho-mode when usually typecasted to more subdued characters like Shirayukihime, Ikaros, and Ononoki, is always interesting (notably with her awesome work on Hatoko's rant from Inou-Battle).

And with the crazy expressions and histrionic drama, I sometimes find it hard to sympathize for characters like Mary, who despite already losing in glorious fashion, still doesn't know when to quit when she's ahead. Sure I shouldn't be laughing, but it's kind of hard not to when everything plays off so comically with the melodrama and extensive detail to the character art. A good example of the animation- Yumeko's legs...they have to be CG-assisted on some cuts, because that shadowing/shading as she walks up the stairs with Suzui is pretty impressive.

              Episode 3

hah, so Yumeko doesn't always win. But the consequences still don't faze her as she takes to the 'mike' status as a joke and playfully accepts her punishment. The hidden cheat to this particular gamble was predictable, but I loved had Yumeko accepts the fact she's up against a bunch of cheaters. Trying to win against them is her passion, and as crazy as she is, she is the most entertaining of all new characters (excluding continuing series). Saori Hayami continues to brilliantly act Yumeko's psychotic ecstasies, while quickly shifting to the more playful roles with such ease. Definitely among the best series of this season.

                Re: Episode 3

You win some, you lose some.

Next opponent is Yuriko and they play a game of roulette with an added twist in that swords are used, and the direction the sword is pointing determines of a selected bet is a win or a loss. So while Yumeko figures out that Yuriko is manipulating the game using hand piercings to control the magnetism of the swords, nothing is guaranteed. So Yumeko puts all of her chips on one number and she loses the bet to become one of the dogs of the school. While Yumeko lost, at least she made Yumeko freak out about it, all while getting humbled at the same time. Should be interesting to see how she gets out of this as now she can only do public challenges just like what Mary did.

So with that, there's one more episode left in the trial period, and while this show would have undoubtedly make the cut, not being able to legally do so until the fall is why it's a bubble show. But in any case, I'll continue for at least next week.

                  Episode 4

Looks like losing money isn't the only gamble people need to worry about, evident of a disgusted Mary finding out her livelihood is at stake.
Hah, and if the characters weren't already insane enough, enter Midari Ikishima, a gun wielding psycho who puts Yumeko's own sense of masochism to shame. I'm not surprised how her creepy craziness scared off Kiwatari and his lackeys, though thankfully it did as Yumeko wasn't exactly in a comfortable situation.

Despite having ill impressions of Mary earlier on, I'm starting to think she may be redeeming herself into a more likeable character. Although she's still scum like everyone else, she's at least beginning to develop more dimensions to her, instead of just being a sore loser and one-offed like the other gamblers. Should be interesting to see how far she can minimize her debt, now that she's essentially teamed up with Yumeko.

Love how this series really exhibits (and tests) the seiyuus ability to shift their vocal ranges almost instantaneously. Mariya Ise as Midari, like Hayamin as Yumeko, is doing an excellent job performing between the subdued scenes and the more dynamic, manic hysteria. Almost literally everyone, except maybe Suzui, exercises their vocal chords like there's no tomorrow. Hearing how all their voices mesh together with the hyperdetailed expressions, makes for some amusing moments. Sure the premise is repetitive in nature, but so is Hell Girl, Death Parade, Food Wars, etc; but they all have that allure that makes you anticipating for more. Next week can't come soon enough.

                    Re: Episode 4

                    There's a way out.

The bad news? Yumeko has racked up a huge debt after losing her high stakes bet with Yuriko. The good news? There's a way out by winning her group's debt exchange event. Her opponents are Mary, Kiwatari, who was picking on Yumeko demanding her to strip until Midari intervened with that loaded revolver bet, and Tsubomi. Yumeko and Mary were secretly working with each other knowing exactly when to fold or go all-in, and then Mary went in knowing she had a crappy hand in order to fool Kiwatari. Oncea gain, Yumeko continues to be at the top of her game, all while Mary is changing for the better after getting humbled at the beginning. It will be interesting to see how things turn out as only one of these four can get their debt erased.

So with that, the trial period is over, and while I would normally say that this show is in a long time ago, the fact that it's not available legally until the fall that it's not a certainty that I'm going to continue on with this show. That said, I'll definitely be watching it, though whether to continue on this season or next when it's on Netflix, that I'm debating.

                      Episode 5

                      Become a human.

As it turns out, Tsubomi is working in cahoots with Kiwatari, so everybody in the room is cheating as it has essentially become a 2 on 2 battle, but Yumeko decides not to report as she loves the thrills when cheating is involved. However, Kiwatari ends up getting played there, first with Yumeko helping Tsubomi win. Or at least think that was as in truth Mary is the winner as he didn't realize that Yumeko and Mary had reported each other's debt as their own, which is allowed by the rules. So Kiwatari ended up winning what turned out to be a bunch of Mary's chips disguised as Yumeko's chips that are nowhere near as valuable. That bastard sure was put in his place seeing that he bullied Tsubomi and made her do all the dirty work for him, all while Tsubomi's outlook on life is much better now despite still carrying the debt. Tsubomi looked quite cute with the longer hair, and it's a shame that it got cut.

So with that, I think this show will be a keeper for this season despite being unavailable through legal means at this time. I just can't ever get enough of Yumeko's antics that make this show really go.

                        Re: Episode 5

Hah, wow... Mary and Yumeko make for an awesome duo; though the SC might want to make it a crime for them to team up since it's practically a conflict of interest to them. :D Funny how the subtleties of the game began even before the official one started, with Yumeko and Mary giving Kiwatari a taste of his own medicine.

For as simple as this show is, I'm impressed with how much depth they go into the cheating; and the timing of the reveals are well written- first with Yumeko calling out Tsubomi and Kiwatari's amateurish tactics; and then later with the chip-values at the end. Funny how Kiwatari didn't realize he fell into his own trap and deservingly so; knowing what he put Tsubomi through.

Curious if the author/production scouted pros to these games; and because there are so many variations of these types of games, I can't imagine any one person perfecting the gameplay and all the nuances that go into every single one. If I owned a casino, I'd probably ban Yumeko and co. from all tables.

                          Episode 6

Putting her life on the line.

Mary is now debt-free, but Yumeko is still in the red and that was intentional so that she can continue to challenge the student council to official matches. It's no wonder Yumeko plays the way she does since she and her ailing sister are the only ones left in the family and as such she has lots of money to spend. So now Yumeko's next challenge is against Midari in a card matching game with a Russian roulette twist. Yumeko got Ryota to be the dealer, which is a good thing, and Yumeko continues to be a great observer as she knew that she was carrying the gun loaded with six bullets in that round. Quite an intense game this is, and even more so with the possibility of the loser being dead.

Hah, wow....Midari is really messed up in the head. Interesting how Mary is invited to join the Student Council. I'm guessing this has more to do with Mary being the insurance the SC needs to compete with Yumeko, since she and Mary make for a formidable team.

Curious to know what's up with Yumeko's sister though. Looks like she might've been obsessed with money herself, whereas, Yumeko isn't but plays for it to help her sister's illness (which seems to be related to money obsession/hoarding it).

Still can't say enough about the soundtrack to this show- excellent in helping drive the thrills and intensity of every episode.

                              No pain, no game.

Wow, Midari is as fucked up as they come and that only took things to the next level when she gouged out her own eye as debt payment. This masochist rigged the game so that she can die, and she does that by mirroring images. But Yumeko's godly sense of observation came through in the end so that the game ends in a draw and Midari is still alive in the end. Well played, Yumeko as she has every right to be pissed off at Midari for setting up a game only to fuel her masochism and that's a total disgrace to gambling. Next opponent for Yumeko is Yumemi the idol.
