    Episode 8

    Living outside the kingdom.

Now that the big truth about Jean has been revealed, this episode is a flashback that explains how Jean came to be up until that train accident that killed his parents. Schnee had been expelled from the royal family, and Qualm had ordered Abend to take her to a sinking ship that would kill her, and he was able to fake her death. They then moved to Badon to start a new life as commoners as Abend would become a landlord and Schnee would become a baker. Jean took of photography in high school and became best friends with Nino, and things looked all well and good until the train accident. That was some interesting stuff there, and it's no wonder Jean's part of the royal bloodline was kept hidden from him as he has no right to the throne being born to a disowned princess.

      Episode 9

The throne is up for grabs.

Now that the rumor about Jean being royalty is true, there's now a war to see who gets the throne as while Jean is next in line, he was disowned by the royal family and Grossular is spearheading a coup across the nation to gain sympathizers for Jean seeing that he will bring peace and prosperity unlike the other royal candidates. As such, Lotta is targeted by a bunch of assassins determined to take those siblings out of the picture and with Jean out on assignment, Lotta is all alone. But she has some help thanks to a tip, and now ACCA is fighting for Jean's sake with these coups. Things sure have gotten intense and it will be interesting to see what the next step is now that Grossular is going all-in for Jean's sake and for the future of ACCA.

        Episode 10

Changing Dowa from the ground up.

ACCA is doing more prep work on the coup as their survival depends on Jean taking the throne with Schwan determined to dissolve ACCA. While Grossular and Lilium are plotting, Jean continues his inspection tour with Pranetta his next destination as it's a poor desert country where mining is the main industry and while they won't be part of the coup, they support Jean for the throne. Then it's onto his last audit before the ceremony at Furawau, but while that's happening the king's health is deteriorating forcing him to retire, thus putting Schwan on the verge of taking the throne. Things sure are intensifying now that ACCA is getting ready to rebel while Schwan is about to become king, all while Jean is still on assignment.

          Episode 11

          These are flowers of evil.

Lots of plotting going on here as assassins try to kill Jean and they would had Nino not taken the blow for him while in Furawau, all while Jean himself is none too interested in royal politics. But he's willing to take the throne for the sake of ensuring ACCA's future as that's the only thing he wants out of it. Warbler is back from Suitsu, but he's initially not on-board with the coup and needed to be convinced that there is a good reason to go through with it. In the meantime, Lilium has some other motive for wanting Jean to take the throne has it would mean power for Furawau and his family. Lots of intriguing things are going on, and it will be interesting to see how all this plays out.

            Episode 12 (Finale)

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

As it turns out, Lilium was the real threat here, not Schwan as the intent of putting Jean on the throne is so that Furawau can control the kingdom while using Schwan's intent to dissolve ACCA as leverage for his scheme. Jean figured out that Lilium was up to no good, so he enacted a counterstrategy by having Mauve convince Schwan that ACCA will remain intact. Thus, Jean's royal ties are never publicized, and he goes on at his job as usual, all while Furawau secedes from Dowa, but the 13 remains on the flag. And then it ends with reflections about how much Jean respects Grossular and Mauve. Pretty nice way to end this with a curveball that I should have seen coming after seeing that Furawau is based off the very hostile region of the Middle East.

Overall, this show ends up being a nice drama after a slow start. The story concept just keeps on building into something more and more interesting as the show goes along, and that leads to some great drama and intriguing stuff that carries this show. The animation is nice despite being unconventional, and the construction of the plot is nicely done once the foundation has been laid. As for the show's problems, it's mostly in the beginning where the show really struggled to lay down the foundation as it was filled with too much bland storywriting, all while there are times where this show just lays it in. In all, this is a show where you need to give it a few episodes as it is from episode 3 onward where the story it wants to tell is clear, which is the drama surrounding Jean's royal ties, rather than it simply being about Jean traveling all over Dowa to inspect.

              Re: Episode 12 (Finale)

So two people fooled the whole of ACCA. I was expecting Jean to pull a fast one on Lilium. I had doubts that Jean would want to become Lilium's puppet or even king for that matter. Did not expect him to plan out everything with Mauve and brilliantly foil Furawau's plans to replace Dowa. That was brilliant. Mauve never did want a coup so now thinking back, it was suspicious how easily she came on board the coup ship. In the end, Jean won. ACCA will be preserved, order will be maintained, and Jean will get to live the life he always has been. And now the Dubai of ACCA has separated itself from the kingdom but the desert land found resources so there's not going to be a problem. I did not expect Abend to be the inspection department chief. He was pushing Jean everywhere to bring things towards a coup since no one wanted Schwann to become king because he's stupid.

Overall, I liked this series quite a lot. The best thing here (apart from that glorious OP) was the world here. Each episode had a different district with each one being drastically different from the other. The background art was sugoi. It lacked a bit in animations because there weren't many opportunities for sakuga moments except for some isolated character acting scenes. Each district was interesting in its own way.

Nothing much happened in the episodes, but there was this feeling that something big is going on in the background. The first seven or so episodes were basically setting things up and they were doing it quite slowly to the point that each episode was basically uneventful. But then they started to kick into gear once the revelations started which made this much more interesting. And then that unexpected ending sealed the deal. Really loved this show.

The fact that more people don't like this show is criminal. Really underrated. Slow burn somewhat yes but I wouldn't say nothing was happening in the first seven episodes it was just somewhat hidden paying close attention you could see what was going on and the power players moving. Very much a pawn becoming the king story but with a twist that is wonderful. When the smartest man in the room doesn't want power but only to control who gets it. Probably my favorite show of 2017.
There is no coincidence only inevitability
