Takumi Harada moves to a mountain town in Okayama prefecture during the spring break before he enters middle school due to his father's job transfer. Takumi is a pitcher, and after the moves he loses faith in his own talent, when suddenly his classmate Kō Nagakura appears in front of him. Kō has a strong desire to form a "battery" (a combination of a pitcher and catcher) with Takumi.

    Episode 1

Meet a catcher and it will come.

That was some nice chemistry there to start out with between Takumi and Go seeing that Takumi just moved to the countryside and he had been losing confidence in himself that he resorts to jogging right away just after he moved in, all while he's trying to learn the sinkerball too soon and risk injury that would require TJ to fix. Everything changed just like that when he met Go, who happens to be a catcher who is well aware of Takumi's talent, and that was especially on display when he knew that Takumi was holding back. So far, it's off to a solid start, and I especially like the use of watercolors for the theme song animations.

      Re: Episode 1

So we have Takumi who is a star baseball player and has changed locations. And he meets a local player who will soon be on his team. Takumi pitching and Go catching was pretty cool. When Takumi got serious, Go couldn't catch his pitches but he took five pitches to get used to that speed and started catching. This was quite interesting. Takumi will now be taking a low level team up to compete in the nationals just like he did with his previous team. There's something else going on with Seiha who wants to play but has a frail constitution and his body might not be able to handle baseball even though he has a pretty damn good aim like his brother. He aimed below the bird and actually hit the branch. Kinda interested in this.

I want to like this, but it's as uninteresting as everything is to the main character... especially that main character.

          Episode 2

          Who says he can't play?

This was all about Seiha and Go establishing a pitcher-catcher relationship there as both guys have someone telling them that they can't play for some reason or another. In Go's case, his mother is telling him not to play because of something he said some time ago when he said that he was going to give it up, while in Seiha's case, his big brother told him the ugly truth about playing baseball. But seeing that Seiha and Go are having a great time together that nothing else matters. Go will keep on playing, obviously. But it remains to be seen how Seiha fits into all this.

So with that, this show will get another episode. It's one of the bubble shows, so it's prospects will depend on how it stacks up against the other bubble shows this season.

            Episode 3

            Hair today, gone tomorrow?

Takumi is showing his stuff during practice, and he's already so good that he's working on his breaking ball, something pitchers of his age aren't able to do. But that requires a catcher that he has good chemistry with, and Go is that guy. Just when things are looking up for Takumi seeing that the pitchers on this team suck, he makes a big fuss about having to get a haircut as ordered by coach Otomurai leading to a dispute as Takumi is threatening to quit the team if he has to shave his head. Both guys were out of line there in that Otomurai is trying to force something that has nothing to do with Takumi's performance that he doesn't want to do, and for Takumi making a scene over it. Things have really boiled over now, and this tenuous situation has gotten out of hand, and I wonder how Go is going to be able to resolve this.

So with that, I think I'll give this one more episode as this is one of the remaining bubble shows. Seeing that Thursdays are thinning out with Planetarian ending and Regalia on hiatus that I might be inclined to continue on with this show. That, and the fact that the sports shows this season have been pretty underwhelming that I might keep it just to have a sports show to watch this season. I like parts of this show so far, but overall it hasn't been impressed seeing that I generally have higher expectations for sports shows than other types of shows.

              Episode 4

              Listen to the coach.

So in the end, Takumi didn't go through with quitting the team, but he's still holding his ground about not wanting to cut his hair. Then he learns that the coach learned under his grandfather, and thus his perspective of things has changed as Tomura sees just what Takumi is capable of with Go as his battery mate. While this didn't resolve the part about Tomura demanding Takumi to cut his hair, at least Takumi is not quitting over such a demand. That was solid, but not exactly the best way to build off of things.

So with that, I'm calling for the bullpen as I am only going to have one sports show for this season between this or Cheer Boys, and the men's cheerleading show is more engaging than this. It just hasn't done what a sports show is supposed to do.

                Episode 5

Takumi is a disrupter for those who just want to get by. The vice-captain only plays baseball to get it onto his student CV so that it looks good on his high school application. Having someone good coming in that is non-conforming and spoiling their small little world results in Takumi being physically bullied. Takumi is no shrinking violet and neither is he the vindictive type. He just wants to play baseball - the be-all and end-all for him.

In a small town when there is only 1 school and anything bad that happens, everyone threads lightly around the matter. No one wants their world disrupted. There are families and relationships to manage due to most every family knows each other. The principal represents the status quo and is trying to keep the bullying under the lid. Will know more in next episode on the repercussions of the baseball club defying his instructions.

This episode continued with showing how much Takumi and Go are coalescing as a battery. It also shows a bit more about Go. He really is like a wife, especially to Takumi.

p.s. Not posted much since AOD days. Picking up on this since I like it for it slow boil and subtle approach.

                  Episode 6

At the beginning of this episode, we get to see that the on-going tense battle-of-wills relationship between Takumi and his mother. Takumi is still curt and headstrong with her and, in her own way, she belittles him and his simple singularly thinking about baseball while trying to get Takumi back as her son and her concern with him. A test of wills with both guilty in how both being headstrong are making the relationship worse.

Due to the bullying in the previous episode, the baseball team has been suspended and misses the summer tournament. The coach, Otomurai, tries to get the principal to use his connection to a junior high school that is the local baseball powerhouse for a game. He refuses due to the relative difference in baseball ability between the schools based on past performance but also because he does not want his authority being challenged indirectly.

The retiring team captain, Kaionji, went around it by instigating a challenge to the other school's team captain, Kadowaki, who is already scouted for a baseball scholarship. A simple showdown challenge is setup between him against Takumi (with Go as his catcher). We get to see the matchup. In the process and towards the end, it seems like Takumi may have lost some confidence in Go. This may lead to a damaged trust between the two which is hinted at in this episode's ED - the visuals have changed showing them apart and the song has changed too which is reflecting that.

So far, there are a few hints right at the very edges that something is not right health-wise with Takumi. An earlier episode ended with him being said to be on IV and in this episode a mother's comment that he seems to have lost weight. Let's see where they are taking with this. It may be that Takumi is the one with poorer health compared to Seiha who may be growing out of his.

                    Episode 7

That last pitch in the simple contest last episode was toned down by Takumi so that Go could handle it. It embarrassed Go because it's as good as announcing to everyone there that Go is not good enough. That simple betrayal breaks the trust between Go and Takumi. When Takumi later goes back to hear out Go, Go is having none of it and calling out Takumi for being aloof. Go vows to become the best catcher that Takumi will ever have as he will be able to catch all of Takumi's pitches. Go has his pride and Takumi stepped on it but also roused it. Before that declaration, he gives a punch to Takumi's face for humiliating him then.

What prompted Takumi to go hear out Go is Seiha, his younger brother. Takumi is an open book for Seiha who reads him perfectly. The contrast between the 2 brothers continues to be striking with Seiha the more emotionally mature one and has a wider view of things while Takumi is emotionally stunted and too focused on himself. That said, Takumi does care about Go in his own way as Go is probably the one who has reached out to him, kept to him, tried to keep him on the right path and is skill-wise, a catcher good enough for him.

Meanwhile Shugo Kadowaki gets his school team to play a match but not in an official exhibition match. The schools are unlikely to sanction it. It's all very traditional conservative in protecting the name and reputation. His close friend on the team, Shun, helps him to organise one that is just a simple sandlot match but with players made up from the respective middle schools. Shun teases Shugo throughout this episode using an analogy of girls/princess as Shuga has his head turned by Takumi's pitching.

While Shugo is fairly straightforward, Shun is a bit more sly. During the match, he indulges in side games and mind games. His mind game at the batting box rattles Go and ultimately affects Takumi's pitching as well. This is just as their trust as a battery is slowly being rebuilt after they just took out Shungo swinging.

The games afoot now. Let's see how Takumi and Go deal with not only the opposing players but also the gamesmanship of Shun. There needs to be a good strong belief and trust between the two to deal with it. Are they capable and mature enough in their pitcher-catcher battery relationship to do so?
