The prequel to Barakamon. It's a show about Handa during his high school days before he became a professional calligrapher.

    Airs: Friday, July 8

    Studio: Diomedea

Set six years prior to the events of Barakamon, detailing the life of Seishuu Handa as a high school student—and a very interesting life it is.

In Handa-kun, Seishuu Handa is admired by his peers as a calligraphy genius and given the utmost respect, but Handa-kun himself is under the mistaken impression that the deference and attention he receives from the other students is actually bullying. Handa just wants to live a quiet life, but hilarity ensues as one character after another challenges his position as the school idol, and somehow comes away as a fan all while Handa is horrified and clueless.

    Episode 1

    Handa-kun, I challenge you!

That introduction was totally unexpected with that Shirobako-like environment as there are four guys out there who want to make the Handa-kun anime a reality. That was pretty hilarious seeing those guys scrambling and getting the show's first episode animated. Now as for the actual show, Handa is pretty passionate about calligraphy and not so much with socializing with others, so much that he even uses his calligraphy brush to paint the answer to a math problem rather than chalk. And then there are two girls who couldn't be any more different with Maiko being the typical moe character, and Juri being a big, manly girl who challenges Handa to a duel to be continued next week. That was some pretty funny stuff, and the surprise factor of seeing the production side of things adds to the hilariousness.

Wow, this really doesn't deserve to be associated with Barakamon whatsoever. That's very disappointing.

        Episode 2

        He's everybody's role model.

That was pretty funny to see that everybody thinks so highly of Handa except for himself, which is who he was at the beginning of Barakamon as he came to the island only thinking about making the perfect calligraphy rather than to do something on his own. Here, his positive reputation got Juri and Maiko to stop fighting, made the class nominate him for the class chairperson, and got one of his classmates to leave his modeling job that he wasn't really enjoying. That Aizawa guy sure doesn't get it when someone is telling him that they are going to play rock in rock, paper, scissors, but Handa should have just said that he didn't want to be the chairperson instead of going through all this. Anyway, it's much different from Barakamon as it's all about the comedy and not so much about how Handa became the calligrapher he was coming to the island.

          Episode 3

          Gotta toughen up.

Akane sure looks much different than he did before he became a shut-in from all that bullying as his former self was pretty girly. But now, he has bulked up and turned into a tough guy, and that transformation sure was something. Then Handa shows just how pitiful he is at cooking with that poisonous pudding of his. And then he talks with Kawafuji, one of his friends that would go on to visit him on the island. That was pretty funny seeing Akane going from girly to macho with an infomercial product, and those punks that picked on Akane sure were in for a surprise when they saw him back at school.

So with that, I'll give it one more episode. I was expecting this show to be about how Handa came to love calligraphy, but instead it's a comical satire that hits in some areas and misses in others. Still, it's fun to watch, but this season is already getting pretty full.

            Episode 4

            There's only one Handa.

For better or worse, Handa does carry around a huge reputation seeing that a guy is imitating him, and other students are writing stuff on his desk. Of course, with those beaver teeth of his that there's no way he can fool anyone into thinking that he is the Handa-kun. Then there is Miyoko singing about erasers. And then Handa's mother drops by, and she's really something.

So with that, the trial period has ended, and at this point it's on the bubble seeing that this show goes a very different route from Barakamon and that this is more of a comedy than a story. I already have a number of those kinds of shows in the running this season, so I'll have to sit back and evaluate everything before coming to a decision.

              Episode 5

In her world, skirts are for men.

Here comes Sawako, and she's quite an ambitious student council president as she is determined to make Handa bend to her will in the form of wearing the girls uniform. She got her right-hand man to do it and all of that has caused Handa to hit his head on the ground, and have amnesia. Of course, those friends of Handa's just doesn't like Handa as he is, so of course they would try to bring out the hammers to get him back. That was pretty hilarious, and Sawako made a great impression that she means business by dressing in a boys uniform. Handa's circle of friends just keeps on growing.

So with that, I'm leaning towards keeping it, but I'll wait another episode before deciding to call it in.

                Episode 6

He can run, but he can't hide.

Handa just continues to add friends who come in all sorts of shapes and sizes here. First, there's Hasegawa, who is Kawafuji's friend, and he's got confidence issues. That was pretty funny seeing Handa disguised so that he could help Hasegawa win the exclusive gaming center's straps. Handa sure did make a stand there when those bullies tried to take away those straps. Then there's Higashino and while he's pretty fast, he somehow can't beat Handa, and that leads to some pretty crazy stuff. And lastly, there's the palmistry segment where some pretty crazy fortunes are being told just by looking at one's palm. In all, another hilarious episode this is.

                  Episode 7

Love isn't done by the book.

Those Handa Force guys sure have some idiots as Reo and Akane had to take make-up exams. But the big surprise is that Handa is also doing it, not because he flunked the exam, but he forgot to put his name on it. The fact that everybody is thinking the same thing is pretty hilarious. And then everybody follows his lead by writing hard and those two idiots end up passing somehow.

Then the librarian Hirayama has her sights set on Handa as she has him checking out a book that is actually a romance novel with the wrong cover in order to get Handa romantically engaged, but it backfires. At least she is able to get more traffic so that she can actually be a librarian rather than somebody just reading because nobody is coming. Her reactions are really cute, especially when her bangs aren't covering her eyes. That was great to see her getting all lovey dovey in her own mind.

Next time, it's off to Kyoto for a field trip, and for Handa, that's really bad.

                    Episode 8

                    Popularity takes on different forms.

Handa is off on a school field trip to Kyoto, and right off the bat there is trouble for him as Ichimiya and his gang from Shiro High butt heads with the Handa Force, who is intent on keeping a low profile for him during this trip. This leads to all sorts of quirky situations and in the end, they make up somehow with Handa telling Ichimiya to see his gang as friends rather than putting on this popularity act seeing that Handa is none too pleased about it. A disastrous trip it was for Handa, and his buddies trying to hid him from Ichimiya is pretty hilarious.

                      Episode 9

                      Follow the leader.

I remember just how frightening dissections in biology class were, and it's a highly controversial topic among animal rights activist. It rears its ugly head here when there are parents complaining about it. While the students managed to man up and go forward with dissecting the frogs, doing it with live frogs is another thing entirely, and so back to the river they go. Then Handa is being followed by the Handa Force looking to stop stalkers from following him. Among them are Miyoko, the librarian, and Dash, and after taking a detour to get to where he needs to go to meet Kawafuji, he finally makes it. Once again, people look up to Handa in such weird ways, and it's pretty funny to see it all go down.

                        Episode 10

It's not your average bishoujo manga.

It begins with Yukicchi, an average Joe, receiving a letter from an average girl, and Yukicchi sees it as a love letter, but that's not it at all. So after consulting with the Handa Force, he's in for a surprise. Then it's onto the club that's about to be dissolved as they are using club funds for all the wrong reasons, and they desperately try to make something. For that, they get Handa to speak with a figure, and seeing how he couldn't stand the sight of a scantily clad girl that he covers her up, and from there the club draws something with the potential to sell. And it nearly got sent to the recycling heap thanks to Handa thinking that it was a recyclable, but he saves the day. The first part was pretty lethargic, but the second half was really funny with that whole conversation with the doll, and the club scrambling when their manuscript was nearly recycled. Next up, it's onto culture festival preparations.

                          Episode 11

                          Wherefore art thou Handa?

It's time for the culture festival, and a bunch of ideas get thrown out as to what the class wants to do, and in the end they decide to combine Romeo and Juliet with the cafe idea to form the Romeo and Juliet Cafe. But things get even wackier as it's a play in a cafe where characters from other Shakespeare plays are in it to give everybody a role, with Handa being given the role of Queen Elizabeth. That was really funny seeing everybody look stupid in the play, while the whole preparation process took a lot of twists and turns. One more episode left as Handa tries to make it through the culture festival.

                            Episode 12 (Finale)

If the crown fits, give it to everybody.

Things got pretty dicey there with Shiro and Kuro coming to pick a fight at the culture festival, but Handa's role-playing as Elizabeth broke it up. Then the culture festival ends with the awards, and as expected Handa wins the crown, which is actually a helmet, for being the rep of the winning class. The pressure was applied to Kawafuji demanding that Handa hands over the crown seeing that he is dead set on keeping his friendship a secret, but instead he gives it to everybody, and then a giant Handa prepared for this moment marches to the bonfire.

That was pretty hilarious the way it ended, but in the end Handa is opening up more so than he was at the start of the show. It had been nothing but mostly one-way friendships, but after this experience Handa finally acknowledges all those students as friends. While it was mild development compared to what he goes through in Barakamon, it's sufficient given the way this show is structured.

Overall, those who came in expecting it to be like Barakamon are going to walk away disappointed, but that's not to say that this completely different approach is not without its merits. It's very funny, and there were some segments that were pretty funny, and others that just felt flat and boring. In general, the comedy is great for the most part, but the show's approach of introducing so many characters leads to limited opportunities for character development, which is the biggest gripe about this show. But in all, it was enjoyable, not exactly from start to finish, but those segments that were done well I really enjoyed.

                            MAL Rating: *******---
